Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The problem, Ethan decided somewhere around the eleventh Arbiter strike, wasn’t that he was losing.

He wasn’t. The Void Sword hummed steadier now, each block landing with less strain than the last, the dark energy gathering along its edge thickening into something that felt less like a weapon and more like a held breath finally being allowed to build toward release. The problem was the noise.

Every impact cracked like thunder directly overhead. Every gathering strike from the Arbiter groaned through the air like tectonic plates grinding. Somewhere behind him, the Void Shield’s overstressed dome kept emitting a high, keening whine every time it absorbed a blow, and underneath all of it, faint but unmistakable, was the low collective roar of a planet’s worth of panicked notifications still pouring in through every open channel the system hadn’t managed to mute.

Ethan blocked another strike, skidded back a full meter across cracked paving stone, and finally said the thing that had been building in him for the last twenty minutes.

”This is genuinely the loudest my life has ever been.”

[NOTICE: Current ambient noise levels in the immediate combat zone are estimated at 140 decibels, sustained. For reference, this exceeds the threshold of physical pain for unprotected human hearing.]

”Yeah, I can tell, thanks.”

[The system would also like to note that global broadcast traffic referencing this exact battle has now exceeded six billion transmissions. Several of them are, technically, still asking about the mug.]

Ethan let out a breath through gritted teeth, catching the Arbiter’s next blow on the flat of the blade and shoving back hard enough to buy himself a few seconds of breathing room. The titan staggered, recalibrating, its glitching error-text scrolling faster across its glass surface.

Ethan used the pause to actually think, which was, admittedly, difficult with a forty-story monster looming over his courtyard and the entire population of Earth apparently refreshing a livestream to watch him do it.

He glanced sideways, toward the innermost shelter beneath the World Tree, where six hundred people were currently huddled against a Shield that groaned every few seconds like it was actively deciding whether to keep existing. He glanced at the tea golem, still trembling faintly near the tree line. He glanced at his own apartment building, cracked and scorched from the last several days of increasingly unreasonable escalation, still somehow standing.

And then, with the specific, dawning horror of a man realizing a problem nobody else had thought to flag, he said the sentence that would later be quoted, dissected, and turned into merchandise across every surviving continent.

”If this keeps going here, I am never getting a decent night’s sleep again.”

[The system pauses to process this statement in the context of an ongoing planetary extinction event.]

[The system has processed it. The system has no follow-up question that would not sound, at this point, entirely rhetorical.]

”I’m serious,” Ethan said, already turning that thought over properly now, ducking under a swipe that leveled what remained of the courtyard’s east wall. ”Every time this thing hits the Shield, it’s gonna sound like that. Every strike I block is gonna wake up six hundred people who are trying to sleep down there. This is a housing complex, not a battlefield. I’ve got neighbors.”

[The system would like to point out that the housing complex is, at this exact moment, functioning as a battlefield regardless of the subject’s preference.]

”That’s exactly the problem,” Ethan said, and swung the Void Sword in a wide arc that sent the Arbiter reeling back three full steps, dark energy trailing off the blade like smoke. ”So I’m gonna fix it.”

[The system would like clarification on what ”fixing it” entails, given the subject’s demonstrated history of solving problems in ways the system does not see coming.]

Ethan didn’t answer immediately. He was too busy doing something the system’s threat-assessment protocols had absolutely no framework for: casually reaching into the Void Inventory, mid-battle, while actively parrying blows from a titan-class entity, and pulling out his entire living room couch.

It came through the Void Step’s shimmer at full size, cushions and all, landing with a soft thump on the one remaining flat stretch of courtyard, immediately followed by his blanket, a lamp that definitely wasn’t going to have anywhere to plug in, and — after a brief pause, like he was double-checking his own priorities — his pillow.

[NOTICE: The subject has retrieved seven pieces of furniture from inventory storage. Mid-combat.]

[The system regrets that it has, once again, run out of appropriate ways to express alarm.]

”Okay,” Ethan said, mostly to himself, stepping back to survey the setup with genuine consideration, entirely ignoring the Arbiter recalibrating for its next strike twenty feet away. ”This isn’t gonna work down here either. Too close to the shelter. Too loud either way.”

He looked up. Past the fractured, glowing sky. Past the Arbiter’s massive shoulder. At the open air above the district, dark and empty and — crucially — very far away from six hundred sleeping refugees.

”Yeah,” he said, decision made. ”Yeah, that’ll work.”

What happened next was witnessed, live, by roughly four billion people simultaneously, and would go on to be analyzed, replayed, and meme’d more than any other single moment in the entire war, including the exhale.

Ethan planted the Void Sword point-down in the cracked courtyard stone, reached out with his free hand, and — with the same short-range Void Step he’d once used to dodge a falling vending machine — teleported his entire couch, blanket, lamp, and pillow roughly eight hundred meters straight up into the atmosphere, directly above the Arbiter’s head, and then teleported himself right after it.

He landed sitting down, mid-air, couch cushions absorbing the impact like he’d simply flopped onto it after a long day, floating in defiance of every law of physics the Framework had ever bothered enforcing, a full eight hundred meters above the battlefield, close enough to the Arbiter’s massive head that its featureless face had to visibly tilt further to track him.

Below, in the courtyard, Suresh stared upward with his tablet hanging forgotten at his side.

”He,” Suresh said slowly, to nobody in particular, ”moved his couch into the sky.”

Around the world, on every surviving screen still broadcasting, the same reaction rippled through millions of exhausted, terrified viewers simultaneously — a strange, disbelieving, hysterical relief, because if the last line of defense on Earth had enough bandwidth left to relocate his furniture mid-battle, maybe, just maybe, things weren’t as hopeless as the collapsing defense lines suggested.

[NOTICE: Subject is currently floating eight hundred meters above ground level, seated on a couch, holding a pillow.]

[The system would like to confirm: is this the plan.]

”This is the plan,” Ethan confirmed, settling in, sword resting across his knees, glaring up at the Arbiter’s massive tilted head with the specific, focused irritation of a man who had finally found the source of a noise complaint and intended to resolve it personally. ”Now it’s just you, me, and the actual sky. Nobody down there has to hear a thing.”

The Arbiter’s error-text scrolled faster, glitching harder than it had all fight, as if even a Tier-Omega planetary reset protocol hadn’t accounted for its opponent solving the collateral damage problem by simply relocating the entire fight to open air and bringing furniture.

[The system logs this development for posterity.]

[The system would also like to note, quietly, that the couch cushions are apparently sound enough to absorb re-entry-level impact forces, which raises questions about that couch’s origin that the system does not currently have the bandwidth to investigate.]

Ethan stood up off the couch, cracked his neck, and hefted the Void Sword properly for the first time all fight, its dark energy roaring now, unrestrained, hungry, finally given the space it needed.

”Alright,” he said, floating steady in the open air, eight hundred meters above a shattered courtyard and a watching planet, voice carrying with the same effortless clarity it always did. ”Let’s finish this properly. Quietly. Where nobody else has to hear it.”

Below, on a billion screens at once, the world held its breath.
