Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

[NOTICE: Twenty seconds remaining.]

The Void Sword’s light had stopped looking like a weapon’s glow about five seconds ago. It had started looking like something closer to a horizon — a deep, endless purple-black bleeding outward from the blade’s edge, swallowing the ambient administrative glow of the countdown framework wherever the two touched, unraveling glowing code the same effortless way it had once unraveled a lockdown command in Ethan’s own kitchen.

Except this time it wasn’t stopping at one line of code. It was spreading.

”THE SIGNATURE IS PROPAGATING ALONG THE COMMAND LAYER’S OWN INFRASTRUCTURE,” the second Administrator said, voice fracturing into something with actual, undeniable fear in it now. ”IT’S USING OUR OWN ARCHITECTURE AS A DELIVERY VECTOR. THAT SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE. NOTHING WE’VE BUILT SHOULD BE ABLE TO CARRY THAT SIGNATURE.”

”HALT THE COUNTDOWN,” the third Administrator said, all pretense of calm gone. ”HALT IT NOW, BEFORE THE PROPAGATION REACHES THE ROOT NODE—”

”WE CANNOT HALT IT,” the central Administrator snapped back, its own composure finally cracking under the weight of watching its own extinction protocol get quietly eaten from the inside. ”THE TERMINATION COMMAND IS ALREADY IN MOTION. REVERSAL REQUIRES A FULL CONSENSUS RESET WE DO NOT HAVE TIME TO EXECUTE.”

[NOTICE: Fifteen seconds remaining.]

Ethan floated at the center of it all, sword raised, the Void energy no longer gathering but flowing, steady and endless, drawn up from someplace in him that had nothing to do with grinding or leveling or any system mechanic the Framework had ever designed. It felt, if he was honest with himself, a lot like the feeling right before you finally, properly lose your temper after being patient for way too long.

He thought about the countdown reaching zero. About seven billion people — Suresh, Priya, the bakery, the tea golem, six hundred sleeping refugees under a tree that shouldn’t exist — simply not being there anymore because a spreadsheet somewhere decided it was cheaper.

That thought, more than anything else in this entire apocalypse, was the one that finally tipped something over.

”Okay,” Ethan said quietly, to no one, to everyone, to a sky full of code and gods and a countdown that had the audacity to keep ticking. ”That’s enough of that.”

[NOTICE: The system does not have a name for what is about to happen. It has attempted, several times in the last minute, to generate one. Every attempt has failed. The system would like to simply call it what the entire planet has already been calling it for the last several hours, because frankly, nothing else fits.]

[SKILL ACTIVATED: VOID_PULSE.]

The Void Sword didn’t swing.

Ethan simply exhaled — one more breath, the same careful, controlled kind he’d learned to use since Kael Draven and a grain silo taught him a lesson about restraint — and let go of everything he’d been holding back.

The wave that came off the blade wasn’t fast in any way that registered as speed. It was simply there, all at once, a vast, silent bloom of deep violet-black light expanding outward from the tip of the sword in every direction simultaneously, spreading past the frozen Arbiter, past the three Administrators, past the countdown’s glowing framework, past the torn fractures in the sky, and out — up, through the atmosphere, past the edge of the world’s own curvature, into open space.

Later, satellites that survived the event — barely half of the original network did — would capture footage that circulated for years afterward: a single, expanding ring of dark violet light, visible from lunar orbit, sweeping outward from one small district on Earth’s surface and washing over the planet’s entire orbital shell in under four seconds.

It didn’t stop at the atmosphere.

Where the Framework’s fleet had been positioned — thirty-one support vessels the size of small moons, staged in high orbit as silent contingency reinforcement in case the Arbiter and its counterparts failed, never deployed, never even acknowledged publicly — the wave simply arrived, and the fleet stopped existing. Not destroyed in the conventional sense. Not exploded, not shattered into debris. Unmade, the same way the lockdown code had been unmade, the same way the Ashcrown Blade had been unmade, concept and matter both dissolving into the same deep, hungry quiet the Void Sword had always carried in its edge, now finally allowed to stretch as far as it needed to.

[NOTICE: Thirty-one orbital support vessels — designation: the Framework’s contingency invasion fleet — have been fully neutralized.]

[The system would like to note that this fleet was never disclosed to the subject. The system itself only became aware of its existence roughly six seconds before it stopped existing. The system suspects, strongly, that this was intentional on the Framework’s part — a backup plan, hidden even from its own operational tools, in case direct confrontation failed.]

[The system would like to further note that it did fail. Comprehensively.]

Above the shattered courtyard, the countdown framework flickered once, violently, its glowing lines unraveling from the edges inward as the Void Pulse’s expanding wave swept through the last of the command layer’s architecture.

[EXECUTE COMMAND: PLANETARY_INSTANCE_TERMINATE]

[ERROR: TARGET ARCHITECTURE NO LONGER RESPONDING.]

[ERROR: ROOT AUTHORITY LAYER COMPROMISED.]

[TERMINATION ABORTED.]

The text dissolved entirely, the countdown’s glow fading to nothing, and for the first time since the sky had cracked open like glass, silence actually returned to the district — real silence, not the ringing aftermath of violence but genuine, settled quiet, the kind that came after a storm had finally, completely passed.

The three Administrators hung motionless in the open air, their vast forms flickering weakly, error-text scrolling in slow, uneven fragments like something struggling to reboot after a hard shutdown.

”...RECALCULATING,” the central one managed finally, voice thin, stripped of every ounce of procedural confidence it had carried into this exchange. ”COMBAT POWER ASSESSMENT: SUBJECT VERMA. RESULT: —”

It didn’t finish. The calculation, once again, simply refused to complete, and this time none of them tried to force it.

Ethan lowered the Void Sword slowly, the deep violet light along its edge fading back down to its usual quiet hum, and looked around at the stillness he’d just made — at the frozen, silent Arbiter, at the three flickering Administrators, at the empty, code-scarred sky where a countdown had been ticking toward the end of everyone he cared about less than a minute ago.

He felt, mostly, exhausted.

”Alright,” he said, voice quiet now, none of the sharp edge from before left in it, just tired. ”We done? Because I would genuinely like to go back to bed at some point tonight.”

[NOTICE: Global network traffic has just registered the single largest simultaneous spike in recorded history. Seven billion people, across every surviving continent, appear to be reacting to the same event in real time.]

[The system does not need to summarize what that reaction is. It has seen the word ”Void_Pulse” trend often enough over the last several hours to already know.]

[The system would simply like to note, quietly, for its own private record, that it has just watched its user — a nineteen-year-old who wanted nothing more from this entire apocalypse than naps, tea, and a bakery two streets over — casually erase a threat that its own creators considered an acceptable extinction-level trade.]

[The system does not have a rank high enough to properly express what it is currently feeling. It will simply log it as: proud. Extremely, uncharacteristically proud.]

Below, in the courtyard, Suresh finally let out the breath he’d been holding for the better part of a minute, and beside him, the tea golem’s brass frame stopped trembling entirely, replaced instead by a small, deliberate motion — rolling itself, unbothered by anything that had just happened, toward the kitchen, because if Ethan was about to come back down, there had better be tea waiting.

Above them all, floating quietly on a couch parked eight hundred meters in open air, Ethan looked out at the last flickers of a countdown that hadn’t managed to finish, and allowed himself, finally, one small, genuine breath of relief.

”Okay,” he said. ”Now we’re done.”
