Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The strike hit the Void Shield with a sound that didn’t register as sound so much as a physical event — a compression wave that flattened grass for two kilometers in every direction, shattered every unshielded window in the district, and briefly turned the sky over the Citadel a blinding, colorless white.

When the light faded, the Shield was still standing.

Barely.

Hairline cracks spiderwebbed across its dome in a pattern that mirrored the fractures still glowing overhead, the dampening field flickering violently, straining under a weight it had genuinely never been built to hold. At its center, Ethan stood exactly where he’d been standing, Void Sword raised overhead, arms trembling — not from fear, but from having caught the tail end of the blow with the flat of the blade, redirecting what he could and simply absorbing the rest.

The Arbiter’s featureless head tilted again, unmistakably registering surprise, the scrolling error-text across its glass surface glitching harder for a moment before settling.

Ethan lowered the sword slightly, breathing hard, and allowed himself exactly one thought that wasn’t tactical: that actually hurt.

[NOTICE: Shield integrity at 34%. Structural failure imminent within the next several exchanges unless load is reduced.]

[The system regrets to inform the subject that ”several exchanges” is an optimistic estimate.]

Behind him, back beneath the World Tree, the tea golem let out a small, static burst of relief that Ethan didn’t have time to acknowledge, because the Arbiter was already drawing back for a second strike, and somewhere in the back of his mind, past the adrenaline, he was aware of something much larger than his own courtyard falling apart in real time.

Because everywhere else, the armies were already losing.

In the European sector, three national defense lines collapsed within minutes of first contact, guilds that had held their ground against Calamity-tier threats for months simply overrun, not through any particular tactic on the titans’ part, but through sheer, indifferent scale. Cities emptied. Highways choked with evacuation traffic that had nowhere left to go, because ”nowhere” was rapidly becoming everywhere.

In the East Asian sector, an entire coastal guild-state’s flagship defense fortress — a structure that had survived two separate Calamity sieges — came down in under ninety seconds, its garrison’s last transmission cutting off mid-sentence.

In Director Voss’s command center, the tactical map had stopped being useful roughly ten minutes ago. It wasn’t tracking battle lines anymore. It was tracking the rate of loss.

”Thirty of thirty-one active engagement zones report critical or total defensive failure,” Chandrasekhar said, voice hollowed out, reading from a screen she’d clearly stopped fully processing. ”We’re not holding anywhere, ma’am. We’re not even slowing them down.”

”Casualty estimates,” Voss said, because someone had to ask, even though nobody wanted the answer.

Chandrasekhar didn’t give a number. She just shook her head slightly, which was answer enough.

General Iyer, standing rigid near the door, stared at the one still-glowing green marker on the entire ravaged map — the district, the only sector on the planet where the defense line hadn’t simply evaporated.

”Thirty of thirty-one,” he repeated quietly. ”And the thirty-first is still standing because a nineteen-year-old is holding a forty-story monster back with a sword.”

Nobody corrected him.

”Get me a line to the Citadel,” Voss said. ”Now.”

It wasn’t just command centers watching.

Across a planet whose infrastructure was collapsing in real time, whatever devices still had power, still had signal, still had anything — phones held by refugees in evacuation lines, tablets in bunkers, radios in vehicles fleeing cities that no longer existed — were tuned to the same handful of surviving live feeds, all of them fixed on the one place where the sky hadn’t fully broken yet.

The hashtag started somewhere in the chaos of the first hour, born less from any organized campaign and more from sheer, desperate, collective instinct — millions of people independently reaching for the same fragment of hope at the same moment, the same word that had, in a handful of prior incidents, meant that whatever was wrong was about to stop being wrong.

#Void_Pulse.

It trended globally within minutes, climbing past every other hashtag on the planet, past the news of collapsed cities, past the casualty reports, past everything, because it was the one thing that still felt like it might mean something other than an ending.

Please. Do the thing you did to the wyrm. Do the thing you did to the Calamity. Do the pulse.

He’s the only line still holding. Please let it be enough.

I don’t care if he’s tired. None of us care. Please.

In a bunker somewhere in the flooded remains of a coastal city, a woman huddled with her two children watched a shaky livestream of the Citadel’s shield flickering against the Arbiter’s assault, and found herself whispering the hashtag out loud like a prayer, the same two words repeating over and over into the dark: Void Pulse. Void Pulse. Please.

She had no idea what it meant, technically. None of them did. All anyone actually knew was that it was the name attached to the one force on the planet that had, so far, refused to lose.

Inside the Citadel, none of that reached Ethan directly — he had no time to check a phone, no bandwidth to spare on trending hashtags — but the system, monitoring global network traffic as a matter of standard operation, delivered the summary anyway, mid-battle, in the flattest possible tone it could manage under the circumstances.

[NOTICE: The term ”Void Pulse” is currently the single most-used phrase on the planet, appearing in over four billion separate transmissions in the last ninety minutes.]

[The system would like to inform the subject that he is, functionally, the last defended sector left on Earth. Thirty defense lines have failed. This one has not.]

Ethan, blocking a follow-up strike that cracked the courtyard’s paving stones a full meter deep on impact, didn’t have breath to spare for a real response.

”Not — really — the time,” he managed, arms straining.

[Understood. The system will summarize efficiently: the entire remaining population of the planet is currently watching this exact courtyard, and asking, specifically, for you to do the thing you already know how to do.]

Ethan gritted his teeth, shoving back against the Arbiter’s next strike with everything he had, the Void Sword’s dark energy flaring brighter than he’d ever felt it burn.

He thought, briefly, absurdly, of a bakery two streets over that had survived a monster wave because he’d been annoyed about missing his morning pastry. Of Suresh, sixty years old, learning to run a sanctuary because Ethan couldn’t be bothered to. Of a golem that made tea and had started taking hits for him without being asked. Of six hundred people sleeping safely under a tree that shouldn’t exist, in a building that shouldn’t have survived this long, because he’d decided, somewhere along the way, without ever meaning to, that all of it mattered.

Four billion strangers were asking him for something. He still didn’t care about that, not really — glory had never moved him, never would.

But somewhere in those four billion were a lot of people who just wanted to go home. People like the ones already sheltering beneath his own courtyard.

That, Ethan understood.

”Fine,” he muttered, planting his feet, sword rising, dark energy gathering along its edge in a way it never had before — deeper, heavier, hungrier, like it had been waiting the entire story for permission to actually be used properly. ”Fine. You want the pulse. You’ll get the pulse.”

[NOTICE: Unprecedented energy readings detected. The system does not recognize this configuration.]

[The system would like to note, with something it can only describe as anticipation, that it has genuinely no idea what is about to happen.]

[Neither, evidently, does the Arbiter, whose scrolling error-text has begun glitching at a rate the system has never previously recorded.]

Above the Citadel, the fractured sky pulsed once, in dim, sympathetic response to the gathering dark light in Ethan’s blade — as if even the broken heavens understood that whatever came next was going to change everything.
