Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The sky over the district didn’t just darken. It cracked.

Witnesses would later struggle to describe it properly — the closest anyone came was comparing it to a windshield taking a hit at highway speed, a spiderweb of hairline fractures spreading outward from a single point directly above the Citadel, each fracture glowing faintly with the same sickly not-quite-light the Admin Gate had used back in Ethan’s kitchen. Except this wasn’t the size of a kitchen doorway. This was the size of the sky.

Through those fractures, the Arbiter descended.

It didn’t look like the monsters Ethan had spent the last several months batting away between naps. Those had been animals, in a sense — twisted, corrupted, but recognizably things that had once been alive. The Arbiter looked built. A vast, humanoid silhouette assembled from something between obsidian and dark glass, easily the height of a forty-story building, its surface etched with the same glitching administrative text that had plagued every notification since the Framework declared war — text that scrolled endlessly across its skin like a body made entirely out of error logs that had given up trying to resolve.

It had no face. Just a smooth, featureless expanse where one should be, radiating the same cold, procedural indifference of every enforcement droid Ethan had already turned into scrap.

Except this one didn’t need to be swung at with a frying pan to feel dangerous. This one, just standing there, cracked the ground half a mile out from the force of its own presence.

Across the rest of the planet, the other thirty titans were doing the same thing to thirty other cities.

In the Coalition command center, Director Voss watched her tactical map fill with red in real time — not slow, creeping red like a monster wave, but sudden, catastrophic red, entire sectors going dark on the grid within seconds of a titan’s landing.

”Eastern seaboard defense line is down,” Chandrasekhar reported, voice cracking under the weight of what she was reading. ”Three guilds, gone, in under a minute. Same pattern in the European sector. Same in—” she stopped, swallowed, kept going, ”—same everywhere, ma’am. They’re not fighting like monsters. They’re not even really fighting. They’re just... walking. Everything in their path stops existing.”

Voss stared at the map, at thirty-one points of catastrophic red spreading across a planet that had, only hours earlier, been cautiously optimistic that the worst of the apocalypse was finally behind it.

”Get every available unit to defensible positions,” she said. ”Do not engage directly. I repeat, do not engage. We buy time. We evacuate. We do not trade lives for ground we can’t hold.”

”And the thirty-second one?” Hall’s voice came through the comm, tight with something close to desperation. ”The one over Verma’s sector? What’s it doing?”

Voss pulled up the feed. Every camera trained on the district showed the same thing: the vast, glasslike Arbiter standing motionless above the Citadel, not attacking, not advancing — simply waiting, its featureless face angled down toward the shimmering dome of the Void Shield like a judge reviewing a sentence it had already decided to pass.

”It’s not doing anything,” she said slowly. ”It’s the only one that hasn’t moved.”

”Why?”

Voss didn’t have an answer. But she had a guess, and it chilled her more than any of the other thirty combined.

It’s not here to conquer territory. It’s here for him specifically. Everything else is a distraction, or a message, or both.

Inside the Citadel, Ethan stood in the courtyard, Void Sword resting against his shoulder, watching the Arbiter’s massive shadow blot out what remained of the sky.

Around him, the six hundred residents of the Citadel had already been moved to the innermost shelter beneath the World Tree fragment, herded there with quiet efficiency by Suresh and a small team of volunteers, the Void Shield’s dome flickering under a strain it had never been tested against before. The tea golem stood near Ethan’s side, uncharacteristically still, brass frame trembling faintly — not out of malfunction, Ethan realized, but out of something closer to fear.

He put a hand briefly on its casing. It settled, just slightly.

”Stay close,” he said. ”You don’t need to do anything. Just stay close.”

[NOTICE: The Arbiter’s atmospheric footprint alone is generating structural stress across the entire district. The Void Shield is currently absorbing pressure equivalent to a category-5 sustained impact, continuously, and has begun showing the first hairline fractures in its integrity since it was first raised.]

[The system would like to state, plainly, that this entity was not designed to be fought. It was designed to end an argument the Framework could not win any other way.]

Ethan didn’t answer immediately. He was watching the Arbiter’s massive, faceless head tilt — slowly, deliberately, toward the dome — and felt something in the air shift, pressure building the way it did right before a thunderstorm broke.

”It’s not attacking yet,” he said quietly.

[Correct. Current readings suggest it is compiling a full-scale strike. The system estimates completion in approximately ninety seconds. The system further estimates that this strike, if it lands, will not merely breach the Shield. It will remove the district — and everyone in it — from the map entirely.]

Ethan’s grip tightened on the Void Sword’s hilt, the dark energy along its edge rippling in response, hungrier and more awake than it had ever been.

”Ninety seconds,” he repeated.

[Ninety seconds.]

”That’s not even enough time for tea.”

[The system regrets to confirm this.]

Ethan let out a slow breath — carefully this time, controlled, mindful of the lesson Kael Draven had taught the world days earlier — and looked past the Arbiter, past the fractured sky, toward the thirty other silhouettes visible even from here as distant, city-sized smudges on the horizon, each one grinding another piece of the planet into rubble.

Something in his chest, usually so reliably unbothered by scale, finally caught up to the actual weight of what was happening. Not fear — Ethan didn’t really do fear, hadn’t since the Void Sword first landed in his hands back in Chapter One — but something adjacent to it. Something that felt, for the first time, like genuine stakes.

Not his stakes. Everyone else’s.

”Okay,” he said, low, mostly to himself. ”They wanted my attention. They’ve got it.”

He stepped forward, out from beneath the World Tree’s canopy, out past the last line of shelter, until he stood alone in the open courtyard directly beneath the Arbiter’s gaze, the Void Sword humming louder with every step, the sky above him still spiderwebbed with fractures glowing that same sick administrative light.

The Arbiter’s compiling strike reached its final seconds, pressure building to a point where the very air around the Citadel began to shimmer and distort, the sound of it less like thunder and more like the low, grinding groan of reality itself bracing for impact.

Ethan raised the sword.

[NOTICE: Strike completion in five seconds.]

[Four.]

[Three.]

The tea golem, back beneath the tree, made a small, static-laced sound that was as close as it could come to calling his name.

[Two.]

Ethan didn’t look back. His eyes were fixed on the Arbiter, on the faceless void where an expression should’ve been, and his voice, when it came, was flat, quiet, and completely without fear.

”You should’ve just left the number broken.”

[One.]

The sky came down.
