Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Colonel Dubey didn’t get the chance to decide whether he was leaving.

He was still processing the cold, absolute certainty in Ethan’s voice — the specific, unfamiliar sensation of being genuinely, personally threatened by something that had, until thirty seconds ago, existed for him only as a secondhand rumor — when the entire sky over the battlefield flickered.

Not darkened. Not clouded over.Flickered, the way a screen flickers when its signal briefly drops, a visible, physical stutter running across the atmosphere itself that every single person on the battlefield felt in their teeth, whether they carried a system interface or not.

[GLOBAL SYSTEM ALERT]

[WARNING: HIGH-LEVEL CORRUPTION DETECTED]

[SOURCE: UNKNOWN]

[SCOPE: PLANETARY]

[AFFECTED PARAMETER: MONSTER AGGRESSION THRESHOLD]

[ADJUSTING...]

Ethan lowered the Void Sword slightly, the cold focus of a moment ago interrupted by something that felt, immediately, considerably more significant than the standoff in front of him.

”Oh, come on,” he muttered. ”Not now.”

[ADJUSTMENT COMPLETE]

[GLOBAL MONSTER AGGRESSION THRESHOLD: +100%]

[GLOBAL MONSTER SPAWN DENSITY: +40%]

[EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY]

[NOTE: THIS CHANGE ORIGINATES FROM OUTSIDE STANDARD SYSTEM PARAMETERS]

[NOTE: THIS IS NOT A NATURAL PROGRESSION EVENT]

[NOTE: SOMETHING IS ACTIVELY MODIFYING THE GLOBAL FRAMEWORK]

Around the battlefield, every soldier carrying a functioning system interface — government troops and militia alike — felt their own phones and gear buzz simultaneously, the same warning rippling out across every faction present, momentarily uniting two forces that had, seconds earlier, been on the verge of open combat.

”What—” Dubey glanced down at his own wrist-mounted display, reading the alert with visible confusion. ”What is this?”

Behind the militia’s scattered ranks, a low, guttural growl rose from somewhere near the ruined battlefield’s edge — one of the smaller scavenger creatures that had been giving the sanctuary boundary a wide, instinctive berth for weeks, driven off reliably by the field’s passive suppression. It didn’t retreat this time. It surged forward instead, teeth bared, moving with a speed and aggression Ethan had genuinely never seen from that species before, straight toward the nearest cluster of militia soldiers.

They gunned it down before it closed half the distance, but the sheer wrongness of the behavior — a creature that had spent weeks learning to avoid this exact area suddenly charging straight into a firefight — sent a ripple of unease through everyone watching.

[SANCTUARY FIELD: RECALIBRATING FOR NEW THREAT PARAMETERS]

[SUPPRESSION EFFECTIVENESS: MAINTAINED AT 100% DUE TO USER’S POWER LEVEL EXCEEDING NEW THRESHOLDS]

[NOTE: PROTECTED ZONE REMAINS UNAFFECTED]

[NOTE: EVERYWHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET IS NOT SO FORTUNATE]

Ethan read that last line twice, and felt the cold focus he’d been aiming at Dubey shift, almost entirely, into something considerably more urgent.

”Everywhere else,” he repeated quietly.

Across the district, the effect hit within seconds, and it hit hard. At the western perimeter, a squad of Crimson Blade fighters holding a routine gate-monitoring position watched, with growing alarm, as a handful of low-tier monsters that had been shuffling harmlessly along the rift’s edge suddenly surged forward in a coordinated, aggressive rush that their standard containment protocols had never been designed to handle.

”Fall back, fall back—” the squad leader shouted, already registering that the threat assessment she’d walked in with was no longer accurate, that creatures rated docile an hour ago were now attacking with a ferocity that matched threats two full tiers higher.

At the settlement market, a routine patrol encountered a pack of the same mutated dogs that had once merely howled at Ethan’s sanctuary boundary, and found them, for the first time in weeks, actively hunting rather than scavenging, working in coordinated flanking patterns that suggested something had fundamentally rewritten their basic behavioral programming.

Priya Malhotra’s radio erupted with panicked chatter within minutes, every squad she had deployed across the district reporting the same pattern — monsters that had settled into predictable, manageable behavior over three weeks of grim adjustment suddenly doubling down on aggression, speed, and coordination all at once, as if some invisible hand had reached down and simply turned every dial to maximum.

”Captain, we’ve got three simultaneous breaches at the northern perimeter—”

”Sector 7’s containment line just collapsed, we need reinforcement—”

”The gate at Market Street is destabilizing faster than projected, something’s accelerating the—”

Priya closed her eyes for a brief second, absorbing the scale of what was unfolding, and made the only call available to her. ”All units, defensive posture only. Do not overextend. I need eyes on every containment point in the district, and somebody get me a line to Sector 4—”

Back at the sanctuary boundary, the standoff between Ethan, Dubey’s militia, and Iyer’s battalion had dissolved almost entirely, replaced by the shared, dawning recognition that whatever conflict they’d been building toward had just become catastrophically irrelevant.

”This isn’t a natural spawn shift,” General Iyer said, striding forward now with his own alert still glowing on his wrist display, abandoning the careful diplomatic distance he’d maintained all morning. ”This is global. Coordinated. Something is deliberately escalating threat parameters across the entire planet at once.”

Ethan sheathed the Void Sword, the fight with Dubey’s forces having evaporated into an afterthought against the scale of what the system had just announced. ”You’re reading the same thing I am.”

”High-level corruption,” Iyer said grimly. ”Whatever built this system in the first place — whoever’s actually running it — something’s changed on their end. And it just made every single monster on the planet twice as dangerous.”

Dubey, standing frozen a few meters away, finally found his voice, though all the confident authority had drained out of it. ”General — what does this mean? For my men, for—”

”It means,” Iyer said, turning on him with a look that carried both exhaustion and genuine contempt, ”that you picked possibly the worst morning in recorded history to point artillery at civilians, and that if you don’t want your remaining forces torn apart by something considerably more dangerous than us, I’d suggest standing your people down immediately and getting them somewhere defensible.”

Dubey, to his limited credit, didn’t argue. He gave the order within seconds, his militia’s scattered remnants falling back from the sanctuary boundary in a retreat that had nothing to do with Ethan’s threat and everything to do with the very real, very immediate danger now radiating out from every gate and rift across the district.

Ethan watched them go, then turned his attention back to his phone, scrolling through the cascading alerts with a focus that had fully replaced his earlier irritation.

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE FULL VISIBILITY INTO THE SOURCE OF THIS CHANGE]

[NOTE: THIS TYPE OF PARAMETER MODIFICATION REQUIRES ADMINISTRATOR-LEVEL ACCESS]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM DOES NOT KNOW WHO CURRENTLY HOLDS THAT ACCESS]

[NOTE: THE SYSTEM FINDS THIS DEEPLY CONCERNING]

”Deeply concerning,” Ethan read aloud, glancing toward the courtyard behind him, where four hundred sheltered people remained safely inside a boundary his own power still comfortably held — and then out toward the wider district, toward Priya’s scattered squads, toward Meenakshi’s bakery and the settlement market and every ordinary, exhausted survivor who didn’t have a sanctuary field or a Void Sword to protect them.

”Yeah,” he said quietly, feeling the weight of the day shift, for the first time since the apocalypse began, into something that genuinely worried him. ”Me too.”
