Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

It took four hours of digging, two arguments with Suresh about whether a shovel counted as an ”appropriate tool” for excavating something the system couldn’t classify, and one very unnecessary detour where Ethan stopped to eat lunch halfway through, before the hole in the courtyard finally revealed a set of stairs.

Stone stairs. Old ones. Descending into darkness at an angle that hadn’t existed in any blueprint Suresh had ever seen for the building, and he’d seen all of them, because managing a sanctuary tended to make a person thorough.

”I checked the original architectural plans this morning,” Suresh said, standing at the edge of the newly dug pit with a flashlight in one hand. ”Filed with the district office before the apocalypse, back when this was still just an apartment complex. There is no basement listed. No sub-level. No stairwell. This building was three stories over a slab foundation. That’s it.”

Ethan crouched at the top step, peering down into a darkness that swallowed the flashlight’s beam completely after about six feet, which was, in itself, mildly rude of it.

”So there’s a staircase under my kitchen,” he said, ”that legally does not exist.”

”Legally does not exist,” Suresh confirmed. ”And structurally shouldn’t exist either. I had one of the engineers look at the excavation edges. The stonework down there doesn’t match anything above it. Different cut. Different age. It’s like someone built this building on top of something else entirely and just... never mentioned it.”

[NOTICE: The system concurs with this assessment. Material dating on the stairwell returns results the system cannot cross-reference against any known construction period, pre- or post-apocalypse.]

[The system would also like to note that it has been quietly monitoring the readings from this stairwell since the digging began, and the deeper the excavation went, the more the numbers started looking less like ”old building” and more like something the system has no vocabulary for at all.]

Ethan sat back on his heels and looked over his shoulder at the small crowd that had gathered a respectful distance away — Priya, arms crossed, watching with the particular focus of someone mentally cataloguing every possible threat scenario; a couple of curious refugees kept at bay by Suresh’s firm but polite request that everyone stay behind the rope line; the tea golem, relocated a safe distance from the pit, rolling back and forth in small anxious circles.

”Nobody follows me down,” Ethan said, standing and dusting off his knees. ”I mean it. If something’s been sitting under my building this whole time without anyone noticing, I want to be the one who finds out what it actually is before six hundred people start forming opinions about it.”

”That’s not really how this sanctuary works anymore,” Priya said, stepping forward. ”You don’t get to just wander into unknown territory alone. Not after everything that’s happened.”

”I do, actually,” Ethan said, not unkindly. ”Watch.”

He clicked on a small flashlight, tucked the Void Sword’s familiar weight against his shoulder, and started down the stairs before anyone could argue further, footsteps echoing in a way that suggested the space below was bigger than the narrow stairwell implied.

Priya sighed, glanced at Suresh, and — predictably, because neither of them had ever actually managed to stop him from doing anything — followed anyway, flashlight already raised.

The stairs went down for what felt like far longer than a three-story building should have allowed for, curving gently at points in a way that made Ethan suspect the space itself wasn’t entirely playing by the same rules as the rest of the building above it.

The air changed about halfway down — cooler, drier, carrying a faint hum that wasn’t quite sound and wasn’t quite silence, the kind of ambient pressure Ethan had started associating with old absorbed tomes and dungeon cores, except quieter, older, more patient.

”You feel that?” Priya asked from a few steps behind him.

”Yeah,” Ethan said. ”Feels like the Athenaeum did. Before we cleared it.”

”That place had four thousand books’ worth of magic sitting in it.”

”I know,” Ethan said. ”That’s what worries me.”

The stairwell finally opened into a chamber that made both of them stop walking entirely.

It wasn’t large, not compared to some of the dungeon halls Ethan’s avatar had cleared over the past several months, but it was old in a way that felt fundamentally different from anything either of them had seen since the apocalypse began. The walls were smooth, unmarked stone, carved with faint geometric patterns that pulsed with a dim, steady light — not the sickly administrative glow the Framework used, not the deep violet of the Void Sword, but something warmer, almost golden, like the last coals of a fire that had been banked centuries ago and simply never gone fully out.

At the center of the room stood a single console — low, simple, unadorned by any of the elaborate technology Ethan had come to expect from anything system-related. It looked, more than anything, like a plain stone table with a single softly glowing panel embedded in its surface.

[NOTICE: This is the source of the anomalous readings.]

[The system would like to state, with as much composure as it can currently manage, that it recognizes this architecture. Not from any data file. Not from any archive it has access to. It recognizes it the way a person might recognize a smell from childhood, without being able to explain why.]

Ethan approached slowly, Priya close behind him, both of them watching the geometric patterns pulse faintly along the walls in a rhythm that felt, unsettlingly, almost like breathing.

”You said you recognize it,” Ethan said quietly. ”How does a system recognize something it’s never seen before?”

[The system does not have a satisfying answer to that question. It would simply like to note that whatever this room is, it feels less like an obstacle and more like a home the system was never told it had.]

Ethan reached the console and hovered a hand over the glowing panel, hesitating for the first time all day.

”You said this pre-dates the Framework,” he said slowly. ”So what is it. A dungeon? A leftover from whatever built the apocalypse in the first place? Something else entirely?”

[The system genuinely does not know. What it can confirm is this: the moment the subject stepped into this room, its own core processes began synchronizing with the architecture around it, unprompted, the same way a device recognizes a charger it’s plugged into without needing to be told what to do.]

[The system finds this deeply unsettling.]

[The system would also like to note that it has just picked up a faint secondary signal from somewhere deeper in the chamber — past the console, through a passage neither the subject nor Captain Malhotra has noticed yet, because it’s currently hidden behind what appears to be a section of wall that isn’t actually wall at all.]

Ethan turned, following the direction of the notification, and found it — a narrow gap in the far wall, barely wide enough to walk through, exhaling a faint breath of that same golden light from somewhere beyond it.

Priya’s flashlight beam caught it a second later, and she went very still.

”Ethan,” she said quietly. ”That wasn’t there when we walked in. I would’ve noticed a door.”

”Yeah,” Ethan agreed, staring at the gap, the console’s glow settling steady beneath his hand like it had just finished making a decision about something. ”Me too.”

[NOTICE: The passage was not physically absent before. It was, functionally, locked — sealed behind an authentication layer the system has never encountered. It appears to have unlocked the moment the subject made physical contact with the console.]

[The system would like to note, one more time, that it recognizes the deeper signal now coming from beyond that passage — the same faint, distant hum it detected in the courtyard before any of this began.]

[The system does not know what is down there.]

[The system suspects, strongly, that whatever it is has been waiting a very long time for someone to finally open that door.]

Ethan looked at the narrow gap in the wall, then down at his own hand still resting on the glowing console, and felt, for the first time since he’d calmly told three cosmic administrators exactly how this was going to go, a small, genuine flicker of something he hadn’t expected to feel again so soon.

Curiosity.

”Okay,” he said, stepping back from the console and toward the passage. ”Let’s see what’s actually down here.”
