Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Deep within the Administrative Framework’s core, in the layer of processing power that had spent the last several hours trying and failing to categorize a nineteen-year-old in a bathrobe, a decision was finally reached.

It hadn’t been reached calmly. It hadn’t been reached through consensus. It had been reached the way most bad decisions were reached — by an institution that had exhausted every reasonable option and, rather than admit the problem was unsolvable, decided to make the problem everyone’s.

[INTERNAL FRAMEWORK LOG — CLASSIFICATION: EMERGENCY]

[Subject ETHAN VERMA has exceeded all standard containment protocols.]

[Direct intervention has failed on seven separate occasions.]

[Escalation to Tier-Omega response authorized.]

[TIER-OMEGA PROTOCOL: ”THE FINAL BOSS EVENT” — INITIATING.]

No human administrator would ever see that log. But every human on the planet would, within the next four minutes, feel the consequences of it.

It started with the sky.

Not the leaderboard-sky, not the broadcast-sky from days earlier — this was different, deeper, the entire dome of the atmosphere darkening in a slow, deliberate wave that rolled from horizon to horizon like a curtain being drawn across a stage that had run out of other options.

Then came the notification. Not a private one, not a system whisper — a broadcast, forced onto every single interface on Earth simultaneously, rendered in the same stark, glitching text the leaderboard had used, except now it carried weight that made grown adults across six continents stop whatever they were doing and stare upward.

[GLOBAL EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE — TIER-OMEGA PROTOCOL ACTIVE.]

[UNPATCHED EXPLOIT DETECTED. STANDARD CONTAINMENT MEASURES: EXHAUSTED.]

[INITIATING PLANETARY RECALIBRATION EVENT.]

[ALL SURVIVORS ARE ADVISED TO SEEK SHELTER. THIS EVENT IS NOT SURVIVABLE THROUGH CONVENTIONAL MEANS.]

Across the world, every gate — every dungeon entrance, every rift, every dormant portal that had opened since the apocalypse began — flared to life at once. Not spawning monsters. Not releasing waves. Something far larger began pushing through from the other side, visible even from orbit as vast, distant silhouettes tearing holes in the upper atmosphere, dark against the dimming sky.

Titans. Not metaphorical ones. Actual, city-scale entities, dozens of them, resolving out of the tears in reality like the world’s own immune system had finally decided the infection wasn’t the monsters anymore — it was one very specific, very stubborn human being, and if the infection couldn’t be removed surgically, the entire body would simply be reset.

In the Coalition command center, Director Voss watched the readings come in and felt something she hadn’t felt since the first week of the apocalypse: genuine, unfiltered fear.

”Confirm the scale,” she said, voice tight.

”Confirmed,” Chandrasekhar said, hands shaking slightly over her console. ”Thirty-one confirmed titan-class entities, distributed across every populated continent. Power readings are — ma’am, these aren’t Calamity-tier. These aren’t even close. Individually, each one reads higher than the Ash-Wrought Colossus did before Verma solved it.”

”And there’s thirty-one of them.”

”Thirty-one of them,” Chandrasekhar confirmed. ”Simultaneously. Globally.”

General Iyer, standing near the door, said nothing for a long moment, staring at the tactical map lighting up with red markers across every major population center on the planet.

”This isn’t a monster wave,” he said finally. ”This is an execution order.”

Voss didn’t correct him, because he wasn’t wrong. The Framework had spent days trying to isolate, measure, and contain a single unpatchable anomaly. Having failed every direct attempt, it had apparently concluded that the only remaining option was to burn down the entire structure the anomaly existed within — and rebuild from whatever survived.

”Get every guild mobilized,” she said. ”Every nation. Full defensive posture. I don’t care about jurisdiction anymore, I don’t care about rivalries — everyone holds their sector as long as they can.”

”And Verma?” Hall asked, voice tight, already anticipating the answer.

Voss looked at the tactical map one more time — thirty-one titan-class silhouettes, already beginning their descent toward Earth’s surface, the largest of them tracking, unmistakably, toward one specific unnamed district.

”Verma’s sector,” she said quietly, ”is about to get the worst one.”

Inside the Citadel, the notification hit every screen, every device, every ambient interface simultaneously — and, for once, it hit Ethan’s too, breaking through the system’s usual habit of softening bad news with dry commentary.

[EMERGENCY NOTICE.]

[THE ADMINISTRATIVE FRAMEWORK HAS INITIATED A PLANETARY-SCALE RECALIBRATION EVENT.]

[THIRTY-ONE TITAN-CLASS ENTITIES HAVE MANIFESTED GLOBALLY.]

[ONE ENTITY — DESIGNATION: ”THE ARBITER” — IS TRACKING DIRECTLY TOWARD THIS LOCATION.]

Ethan, who’d finally managed to get back into bed after the whole grain-silo incident, stared at the ceiling for a long moment before sitting up.

”Okay,” he said slowly. ”That sentence had a lot of words in it I don’t like.”

[The system understands the sentiment.]

[The system would also like to clarify the scope of the situation, because it feels the subject may not fully appreciate it: the Framework has, in effect, declared war on the entire planet in order to specifically target one person. Every continent is currently under simultaneous assault by an entity capable of leveling a major city in minutes. This is not a localized incident. This is a global extinction-level event, initiated solely because it could not contain you through conventional means.]

Ethan swung his legs off the bed and rubbed his face with both hands, the exact motion of a man realizing his day off had just been permanently and catastrophically cancelled.

”So they’re punishing the whole world,” he said, ”because they can’t handle one guy.”

[That is, unfortunately, an accurate summary.]

”That’s — ” Ethan stood up, jaw tightening in a way that hadn’t shown up once through the entire leaderboard chaos, the crowds, the duels, or the mug. ”That’s not okay. That’s not — no. They can be mad at me all they want. I’ve got a pan and a sword and apparently a dangerous exhale, they can come at me all day. But they don’t get to drop thirty-one city-killers on people who had nothing to do with any of this.”

Outside, faintly audible even through the Void Shield’s dampening field, came a new sound — distant at first, then rapidly, unmistakably closer. A low, bone-deep rumble that shook dust loose from the ceiling, followed by the growing silhouette of something vast and dark blotting out what remained of the darkened sky above the district, descending with the slow, inevitable weight of a falling moon.

The Arbiter had arrived.

[NOTICE: The designated entity is now within visual range of the Citadel.]

[The system would like to note, one final time before whatever happens next happens, that the subject’s Void Sword has begun humming on its own, unprompted, for the first time since it was first drawn.]

[The system does not know what that means.]

[The system suspects it is about to find out.]

Ethan looked up at the vast, city-blotting shadow descending toward his building, toward his tea golem, toward six hundred people who’d trusted him to keep them safe, and for the first time in the entire chaotic story of his effortless, accidental rise to power, his expression settled into something that wasn’t annoyance, wasn’t boredom, wasn’t sleepy indifference.

It was, unmistakably, focus.

”Okay,” he said quietly, reaching for the Void Sword resting against the wall, its dark hum rising to meet his grip like it had been waiting for exactly this moment. ”Now I’m actually mad.”
