The Female CEO's Personal Bodyguard

Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Can’t Figure It Out, Where Did I Lose?_1

”Hello, Santino Vasquez.”

”Carson Flores.”

Carson Flores and Santino Vasquez shook hands, and then Carson gallantly helped Shirley Miller to pull out her chair.

Watching this scene, Santino’s heart soured with jealousy, and he feigned complaint, ”Shirley Miller, you got married so quietly, none of our classmates knew about it. You went too far without even telling us.”

Shirley Miller smiled slightly, ”We just got our marriage certificate not long ago, and haven’t even had the wedding banquet yet.”

Just got the certificate?

You must be kidding me.

Santino laughed, ”I never heard about you having a boyfriend before. You kept it quite secret, and now you suddenly announce you’re married. It’s really surprising.”

Shirley Miller laughed, ”My grandfather and Carson’s master are old friends. Our marriage was arranged directly by the two elders. Actually, Carson and I haven’t known each other for very long. We belong to the type who got married first and then fell in love...”

Santino was stunned. He had already convinced himself that the man before him was a fake, but after Shirley’s explanation, he became uncertain again.

”What era is it now that there are still arranged marriages by elders?”

Santino asked with incredulity, then turned to Carson, ”Mr. Flores, I don’t have any objections to your marriage, just a bit astonished.”

No objections?

You have a lot of objections.

It’s almost as if you have ’distrust’ and ’jealousy’ etched on your face.

Carson laughed, ”I was also surprised when my master told me about this. As you said, what kind of era are we in that arranged marriages still exist? I had never seen nor experienced such a thing, and I was quite resistant at first. But one cannot defy a master’s orders. I had to come to Polgel reluctantly. Fortunately, after getting to know her these days, I’ve found Mary to be beautiful, capable, and kind-hearted. Now, I kind of thank my master.”

Santino’s heart felt like it was about to explode with anger.

You act like you got the better deal and are being coy!

Resistant?

What are you resisting?!

For such a beautiful woman, whom others can’t even pursue and everyone dreams of, you’re still resisting!

You’re plainly showing off!

Shirley Miller’s beautiful eyes sparkled. What Carson said must be true.

She was resistant to this arranged marriage; Carson’s heart must have been resistant at the start, too.

Shirley Miller knew she was beautiful, but from the very beginning, Carson never showed any unusual enthusiasm or took the initiative. Even when they slept in the same room, he behaved properly, never making improper comments or overstepping boundaries.

After a while, Shirley actually realized that Carson, in playing the role of her fake husband and helping her unconditionally, was doing so primarily to repay a favor and eventually to obtain the Jade Pendant.

Santino laughed, ”Shirley Miller was our school’s campus belle, the recognized goddess, the dream girl for all the guys. If those male classmates heard what you said, you’d probably get beat up.”

Carson watched Santino with a smiling gaze, ”Do you also want to beat me up?”

Santino was caught off-guard for a moment, then laughed, ”Indeed, it’s a mix of envy and jealousy.”

Carson chuckled, ”That won’t do, because you definitely can’t beat me.”

Shirley couldn’t hold back and burst into laughter; Carson’s words were too funny.

Santino’s face stiffened for a moment, and then he said with a forced smile, ”Just kidding, who would seriously fight? Sheldon found her happiness, and as a classmate, I am happy for her too... By the way, Mr. Flores, what do you do for a living?”

Carson laughed, ”I’ve been in the military for the past few years, just retired, and now I’m with River Miller, basking in my wife’s glory and following along with her.”

Santino’s eyes widened in disbelief.

Living off your wife?

Being a kept man?

”Er, that’s a bit unexpected. Seeing Mr. Flores’s fine appearance and demeanor, I thought you had succeeded in your own business ventures.”

Carson appeared not to detect the sarcasm in Santino’s words, responding casually, ”I don’t usually care much about my attire. The watch was a gift from Mary before; I only bought these clothes today. No matter how casual at home, I wanted to make a good impression meeting Mary’s old classmates.”

Shirley didn’t expect Carson to respond like that, and playfully slapped his arm, scolding him, ”What are you talking about? I gave you the watch because you helped me a great deal and I wanted to show my appreciation. Regarding buying clothes, it’s just that you’re usually too lazy to shop, and when I buy them for you, you don’t want them...”

Carson laughed it off, ”It’s not important, really not important. Besides, you paid for the clothes today, don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Shirley was exasperated and said with a smile to Santino, ”He’s always been a loner and speaks his mind, don’t take it to heart.”

”Mr. Flores is straightforward, which is good,” Santino said, the forced smile still on his face as his heart bled.

Hard to swallow the fact of being a kept man?

It’s clear you’re being kept, yet you’re so shameless, and Shirley is still desperately protecting your dignity!

Why couldn’t it be me?

In what way am I, with my looks, family background, or abilities, not better than this kept man?

Where did I lose?

Just because I don’t have an elder who is good friends with your grandfather?
