The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Petra found the journal on a Monday.

She had been going through Daren’s former quarters, a task she had put off for two weeks out of a respect for the relationship that had existed between the Beta and the Alpha, and because there was no operational urgency that demanded it. Then Reyna mentioned, in the course of a briefing about the Hollow’s artifact collection, a specific detail about a secondary documentation system the faction used for communicating with recruited contacts.

Physical records, she said. Handwritten. The Hollow’s leadership had learned that digital communication left trails that supernatural investigators and occasionally human ones could follow. They had reverted, for their most sensitive operational content, to paper.

Petra had gone to Daren’s quarters the following morning.

She brought the journal to Axel at noon without opening it, which told him what it had cost her to find it and not look.

He read it in the war room alone, which was how he dealt with things that were going to require a period of private processing before they could become operational information. It took him forty minutes. He read it twice.

Then he sat with it for ten minutes in the particular cold quiet of a man absorbing something that confirms a thing he had suspected but had not wanted to confirm.

Daren had been contacted by the Hollow six months ago. Not nine days before he left. Six months ago, while Axel was still in the northern territories, while the pack was running on Beta authority and elder oversight and the accumulated momentum of an Alpha’s absence.

The journal was meticulous. Of course it was Daren was a meticulous man. It recorded every contact, every communication, every piece of information exchanged. The Hollow had not approached him with ideology. They had approached him with a specific and practical argument: that Axel Bessario’s leadership had become a liability to Ashveil Pack, that his prolonged absence indicated either an inability or an unwillingness to prioritize his pack over personal concerns, and that the pack deserved a Beta who could make the hard decisions an absent Alpha wouldn’t.

Daren had not agreed immediately. The journal showed three months of resistance pushback, counterarguments, the particular loyalty of a man trying to find reasons not to do the thing he was being asked to do. Then something had shifted. A single entry, two sentences, in Daren’s compressed handwriting.

He brought her here. Into the packhouse. Into the eastern wing.

He brought her here and called it strategy.

Axel read those two sentences four times.

He understood then what had broken. Not the pack’s safety in Daren’s mind, not some abstract principle of wolf-vampire separation. The specific, personal rupture of watching the person you had followed for fourteen years make a choice that you couldn’t reconcile with the person you had believed him to be. Daren’s betrayal was not ideological. It was grief wearing the clothes of principle. The grief of a man who felt he had lost his Alpha before the Hollow had ever made contact, and who had reached for the nearest available explanation for the loss.

This did not excuse it.

It made it comprehensible, which was a different and in some ways harder thing.

He called Petra back in and told her what the journal contained. She listened without expression, which was how Petra listened to things that cost her something.

”How much of this does the Hollow have?” she asked when he finished.

”Everything he knew up to the night he left.” Axel closed the journal. ”Which means they have the patrol schedules we’ve already changed, the access point locations we’ve already repositioned, and...” He paused. ”Reyna’s pre bond status.”

Petra went very still. ”He knew about that?”

”He was observant. He noticed the signs before she or I had formally acknowledged them.” He looked at the journal on the table. ”He documented it four days before he left.”

The implications of that spread across the table between them like something spilled that couldn’t be recalled.

If the Hollow knew that a pre bond was developing between Reyna and Ashveil’s Alpha, the ritual calculus changed. It wasn’t just about Reyna’s blood anymore. A pre bond between a vampire of the Voss bloodline and an Alpha wolf would carry properties in the blood that neither individual bloodline carried alone. The combined power of the bond in its early stage was Axel didn’t have the precise supernatural vocabulary for it, but he knew enough from what Reyna had told him to understand that the word significant didn’t cover it.

He needed her.

He found her in the library. She was at the long table with three books open and what appeared to be notes she had been making in a small notebook she had sourced from somewhere in the packhouse. She looked up when he came in and read his face in the two seconds before he sat down.

”What happened?” she said.

He told her about the journal. He told her all of it the six month timeline, the Hollow’s approach, the specific information Daren had passed. He watched her face as he told it. She didn’t look surprised by most of it. She looked, briefly, sick when he got to the pre bond entry. Then she locked that down and looked at the table.

”They’ll adjust the ritual design,” she said. ”If they know the bond is developing, they won’t try to take me alone. They’ll try to take both of us.” She looked up at him. ”Or they’ll try to force the bond to complete under conditions they control.”

”What does that mean?”

”It means they could use the connection between us as a mechanism.” She said it carefully, the way she said things she would prefer not to be saying. ”If the bond is at the pre-completion stage, a significant enough trauma to one party creates a pull response in the other. Like a reflex.” She held his gaze. ”If they hurt you badly enough, I come to you. If they take me and hurt me, you come to me. Either way, they get both of us in a location they control.”

The war room map swam briefly in his peripheral vision all those black markers, all that calculated threat. He pulled his focus back.

”Then we don’t give them the separation they need,” he said.

”We’ve been careful about being seen together...”

”That calculation just changed.” He looked at her directly. ”If the threat vector runs through the distance between us, we close the distance. Operationally. You come off the east wing and into the main operational rotation. You’re in the briefings, you’re in the patrol planning, you’re visible and present and the pack understands you’re a functioning part of this response.”

She stared at him. ”Your pack is already divided...”

”My pack is already in danger. Those two things are not equivalent.” He said it without heat, but with a firmness that didn’t invite negotiation. ”We have days, Reyna. Maybe less. The Hollow knows about the bond. They know about you. They know our patrol patterns and our access points and they’ve had six months longer than I knew to prepare for this.” He leaned forward slightly. ”I need you where I can see you and where you can function. The east wing is done.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

The library was quiet around them old books and the smell of paper and the particular hush of a room that had held a lot of thought over the years and had gotten comfortable with it.

”There’s something else,” she said. She reached across the table and turned one of the open books toward him. It was old the packhouse library had volumes that went back two centuries and she had it open to a page that dealt with supernatural bond theory. She had underlined a passage in the careful way of someone who had been hoping to be wrong about what they found.

He read it.

He read it again.

The passage described, in the archaic but precise language of whoever had written it, a third consequence of an incomplete pre-bond in a mixed supernatural pairing. Not the trauma-pull that Reyna had described. Something that happened to the bond itself when it was deliberately interfered with.

If an external party with sufficient ritual knowledge attempted to redirect or weaponize an incomplete bond, the bond responded. It accelerated. It moved to completion not through choice but through the body’s defensive response to threat the same way a wound clotted faster under pressure.

The Hollow didn’t just want to use the pre-bond as a trap.

They wanted to trigger the completion themselves. Under controlled circumstances. With the combined blood of both parties available for the ritual before either of them understood what had happened.

Axel set the book down.

He looked at Reyna.

She looked back at him with the expression she wore when she had already done the math and it had come out somewhere she hadn’t wanted it to come out.

”Tell me how we stop it,” he said.

She opened her mouth.

Then the patrol alarm sounded from the eastern boundary.

Three short pulses. The signal for multiple hostiles at the corridor line.

They were already moving before the third pulse finished.
