The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

It happened on the fourteenth night.

Later, when Axel tried to reconstruct the exact sequence of decisions that led to it, the chain was clear enough. Each individual link had been reasonable. It was only the full length of the chain, laid out and examined, that revealed how far it had carried him from where he’d started.

The eastern patrol had gone dark at eleven-forty.

Not a radio failure, the check-in simply stopped coming. Four wolves, experienced, running the standard corridor boundary sweep. They had checked in at eleven, at eleven-twenty, at eleven-forty they were silent. The protocol for a missed check-in was a two-minute wait, a second attempt, and then escalation. Axel was in the war room when the escalation came through, and he was moving before the second attempt had finished.

He took Daren and three others. He moved fast, cutting through the forest on the diagonal route that clipped twenty minutes off the standard trail, moving with the urgency of a man whose people were silent in the dark in the part of his territory that had already given him one body.

They found the patrol at the boundary.

All four were down, not dead, but in the same condition as Eli and Cord Farrow had been, curled or slumped at the base of boundary trees, breathing and physically whole and unconscious in a way that looked like sleep but wasn’t sleep. The memory-stripping technique, again, but applied to four experienced wolves simultaneously, which meant something stronger than Axel had been told to expect.

He checked each of them quickly and established they were physically unharmed. He sent Daren and two warriors to get them back to the packhouse. He kept one warrior, a steady, older man named Brek and told him to hold the treeline.

Then he looked into the corridor.

The cold was there. Immediate and focused, stronger than it had been the other times, which told him something or multiple somethings were present rather than one. The shadows between the trees had the occupied quality he had identified before, multiplied.

He stood at the boundary for thirty seconds, calculating.

Then he made the decision that began the chain.

He crossed the boundary line.

He went in ten meters. Far enough to see further, not far enough to lose visual contact with Brek at the treeline behind him. The cold thickened around him as he moved, not hostile, but present, the way air pressure changed before weather. He held his wolf carefully, keeping the shift contained, needing the awareness that his human mind provided rather than the reactive speed that the wolf offered.

He saw three shapes in the dark ahead.

Two of them were unknown to him, tall, still, carrying the absolute motionlessness of vampires who had stopped bothering to perform the biological illusion of movement. They were watching him with the steady attention of things that had seen a wolf cross a boundary line and were determining what category to place it in.

The third shape he knew.

Reyna was between him and the two others, and she was not still, she was in movement, a controlled, contained kind of movement that he recognized as the aftermath of a confrontation. She had been fighting, or was about to fight, or had just prevented one. Her attention was on the two behind her, not on him, but the angle of her head told him she had registered his presence the moment he crossed the line.

The two unknown vampires looked at Axel.

He looked back. He kept his posture open and his hands visible and his eyes steady, because bolting was not an option and aggression was not an option and the only thing that might prevent what the next thirty seconds could become was the communication of a thing that was not afraid.

One of the two moved forward.

He was older than his appearance suggested. Axel could tell by the quality of how he moved, the absolute efficiency of it, nothing wasted, everything controlled. He stopped five feet from Axel and looked at him with eyes that were fully dark, no white visible, which was either a response to emotion or a permanent state.

”Wolf,” the vampire said. ”On our ground.”

”Neutral ground,” Axel said.

”Neutral ground.” The word was repeated with a quality that suggested it found the concept quaint. ”Your pack’s presence here ended three of ours in the last season. The ground is not neutral.”

”My pack has not....”

He never finished the sentence.

The second vampire moved from a standing position to Axel’s right side with a speed that his wolf-fast reflexes barely tracked, and then a hand was at the back of his neck and something pierced his skin at the junction of neck and shoulder, not a bite, not fully, but enough. The edge of teeth, the specific pressure of pointed canines through skin, the immediate burning spread of something that was not venom in the conventional sense but was not nothing either.

He reacted by pure instinct going forward, dropping his weight, breaking the grip through momentum rather than strength and putting six feet of corridor between himself and both vampires in one movement. His wolf was at the surface in a fraction of a second, the shift pressing hard against his skin, and it took everything he had to hold it back.

Reyna was between him and both vampires before he had finished finding his footing. The movement was so fast it registered as having simply happened rather than having a discernible process. She had her back to him and was speaking in a language he didn’t know, low, fast, with a tone that landed somewhere between command and warning.

The two vampires looked at her. A long, charged moment.

Then they withdrew into the dark of the corridor and were gone.

The silence settled back.

Axel stood in the neutral zone corridor with burning running from his shoulder along the right side of his neck, and his wolf pressing hard against his skin, and Reyna Voss standing four feet away with her back still to him, and he breathed. He breathed carefully and slowly and used the breathing to push the shift back down where it belonged.

She turned around.

Her face was controlled but he could read it now, the particular tightness around the eyes that people who didn’t allow visible panic wore when panic was the accurate emotional response. She looked at the side of his neck, at the marks there, and something moved through her expression.

”How deep?” she said.

”Surface,” he said. He rolled his neck carefully. The burning was there, not agonizing, but consistent, spreading. ”What was in it?”

She crossed to him, which was not a decision she appeared to deliberate about, and looked at the marks with the same clinical attention he had been giving everything since he arrived in the corridor. She was close enough that the cold of her reached him, overlapping with the burning from his neck, a strange combination that his nervous system couldn’t quite categorize.

”Hollow compound,” she said. ”They’ve been putting it in the bite reflex, it’s not venom, it’s synthesized. It’s designed to weaken wolf healing capacity.” She looked up from his neck and met his eyes at close range. ”You need to get back inside your territory.”

”How do I clear it?”

She was quiet for a half-second. ”My blood,” she said. ”Vampire blood against Hollow compound counteracts the synthesis. It’s a complete opposition.” Another half-second. ”The tradeoff is that it creates a temporary connection. Nothing permanent. But for a period of hours, your biology and mine will be in communication.”

He looked at her.

She looked back.

”How long?” he said.

”Twelve to sixteen hours. Then it resolves.”

He had been standing in a vampire corridor for six minutes and was already the subject of a decision that would have made his father and his elders and every cautious voice in the history of his pack say the same thing with the same certainty.

”Do it,” he said.

Her expression didn’t change significantly. She brought her wrist to her mouth without ceremony or drama, and he looked away for a fraction of a second at the treeline, and then she held her wrist to him.

He took it.

The blood was cold in the way she was cold not unpleasant, not pleasant, something that existed outside the categories his previous experience had provided for it. It hit the burning in his neck like water hitting a fire not extinguishing it immediately, but changing it. Changing the nature of it.

And then something else happened, beneath that something quiet and enormous, like a door opening in a room he hadn’t known was there.

He pulled back.

She withdrew her wrist and held his gaze with the same composed attention she had held everything with since the day she walked through his gates.

”We need to move,” she said.

He nodded. They moved.

Behind them, the corridor held its silence, cold and old and indifferent to what had just been set in motion.
