The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

It happened during a training session, three days after the mark appeared.

Which was, when Axel examined it afterward, the most embarrassing possible context, not a crisis, not a high-stakes confrontation, not a situation that could be held responsible for extenuating circumstances. Just a training session. The morning yard, eight warriors rotating through combat drills, ordinary work in ordinary cold light.

Reyna had been watching.

She did this occasionally, came to the yard in the early sessions, positioned herself at the perimeter, observed with the specific attention of someone who was learning the pack’s combat capabilities with the same thoroughness she brought to intelligence work. He had cleared it with the senior warriors in advance and they had, with varying degrees of grace, accepted it. It was operationally sound. She needed to understand what the pack could do if the convergence operation required adaptive response.

He knew she was there. He was always aware of where she was, the mark had added a compass-precision to an awareness that had already been present, layering the biological over the instinctive. He registered her at the edge of the yard and set the registration aside and ran the training session with his full attention.

They were working defensive formations. Six warriors in a rotating guard pattern, two attackers running breach attempts. He was moving between positions, demonstrating technique, correcting form, the hands-on teaching role that he preferred to pure direction. He was partnered with Petra for a demonstration pass, and Petra hit hard and without ceremony, which was one of the qualities he most valued in her as a training partner.

He was showing the break of a specific hold, the counter to an overextended grab from the right, a hip rotation and leverage move that his father had taught him at fifteen and that worked because it used the attacker’s momentum rather than opposing it. He ran it twice at half speed for the watching warriors, then once at full.

On the full-speed run, the hold landed wrong.

Not dangerously, Petra was too experienced for a technique failure to become an injury. But the grip caught at an angle that activated the resonance mark on his neck with a sudden, sharp intensity that was completely unlike its usual low warmth. Not pain exactly, more like a shock of sensation, specific and targeted, that hit his nervous system at the exact moment he needed his full concentration on the physical mechanics of the throw.

His control slipped. For approximately two seconds.

Two seconds was not long. In a social context, two seconds of lost composure was undetectable. In a training context with eight experienced wolves watching their Alpha, two seconds was a geological age.

The throw completed, muscle memory carried it through cleanly, which was the only mercy. But the two seconds were there, visible in the specific way physical control lapses were visible to people trained to read bodies. A slight catch in the breath. A fractional hesitation at the apex of the move that had no technical explanation. A quality in the eyes that Petra, who was closest and most attentive, registered with a look she immediately neutralized into professional blankness.

He stepped back. He ran the session for another fifteen minutes with complete, meticulous control, and he dismissed the warriors cleanly, and he did not look at the perimeter until the yard was empty.

Then he looked.

She was still there.

He walked to the perimeter. She watched him come with the neutral attention she used in professional contexts, but he could see past the neutral surface now, the compass quality of the mark gave him access to a layer of awareness that the clean professional register didn’t quite cover.

She had felt the mark activate. He understood that immediately, she had felt it through her own resonance connection at the same moment he had, which meant she had been standing at the perimeter of his training session and received the same sharp sensation through the same biological channel.

Which also meant she had watched the two seconds.

”Don’t,” he said quietly.

She looked at him. ”I wasn’t going to say anything.”

”I know. Don’t not say it in a way that says it.”

A fractional pause. Something moved through her expression that was almost, in a different context, the beginning of something that might eventually become a smile. Almost. ”I’ll work on that.”

He stood at the perimeter fence and looked at the empty training yard. ”It’s stronger when there’s physical stress on the site,” he said. ”The mark. I didn’t know that.”

”Neither did I,” she said. ”I should have anticipated it.” She was quiet for a moment. ”I also felt the activation. During whatever that hold was.”

”Shoulder grab counter.” He looked at her. ”Does it affect your control?”

She considered the question with the care she gave things that were being honestly reported rather than managed. ”Not control. Attention.” A pause. ”You have my attention more or less constantly, at a low level. When the mark activates sharply, the low level becomes....” She stopped. ”It becomes less low.”

He held her gaze. ”That’s going to be a problem if it happens during the convergence operation.”

”Yes,” she said. ”I know.”

”Can we develop a threshold? A way of modulating the activation under physical stress?”

She looked at him with the expression that meant she was assessing whether a practical framing was genuinely what he meant or whether it was the shape he was giving something else. She was getting very good at that distinction.

”We could try,” she said.

”Training sessions,” he said. ”Gradual exposure. Both of us working with the mark active and building tolerance to the activation.” He kept his voice even and his framing operational. ”If the convergence operation goes as planned, we’re both going to be under significant physical stress at the same time.”

”Yes,” she agreed. ”That’s a legitimate operational concern.”

”Good.” He pushed off the fence. ”Tomorrow morning. Six o’clock.”

He walked back to the packhouse.

Behind him, at the perimeter, she stood for a moment longer in the morning cold.

Both of them understood that what had been proposed was operationally necessary and true.

Both of them also understood that spending early mornings in a training yard, deliberately activating a biological resonance connection between their nervous systems under conditions of physical proximity, was a quantity of closeness that was going to require significant management.

Both of them showed up at six o’clock the next morning anyway.
