The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Reyna had not fed in eleven days.

This was not, technically, a crisis. She had gone longer. The specific physiology of her kind was not the dramatic, urgent thing that popular mythology made it, she did not become violent at a certain threshold, did not lose coherence or control in the ways that stories described. What happened was subtler and, in some ways, harder to manage. A sharpening of perception that went past useful into intrusive. A specific awareness of warmth, living warmth, the biological signature of things with blood and a heartbeat, that sat at the edge of consciousness and pulled at it with increasing insistence.

A packhouse full of wolves was not an ideal environment for eleven days of abstinence.

She managed it. She had been managing it since the second day, when she had assessed the situation and made the decision that feeding in the packhouse was not an option she would pursue. Not because she couldn’t, she had a supply of sealed units in the east wing, a practical arrangement she had maintained for decades that had nothing to do with hunting and everything to do with function. The units were in the vehicle that still sat at the packhouse east gate, and accessing them required a brief conversation with the gate guard that she had been postponing without examining her reasons too precisely.

She examined them now, on the eleventh night, sitting in the east wing room with the intelligence logs open in front of her and the packhouse’s ambient warmth pressing at the edges of her attention with a persistence that was approaching operationally significant.

Her reasons were not complicated. The packhouse was already managing a significant amount of adjustment to her presence. A vampire feeding, even from sealed units, even in the total privacy of the east wing, added a biological reality to the equation that the pack’s instincts would register. Blood was blood. The smell didn’t lie. And the pack’s response to that smell, in the current tension-loaded context, was something she had been quietly sparing them.

Noble. Also, she was beginning to conclude, genuinely stupid, which was the occupational hazard of nobility pursued past its useful point.

She went to find Sera.

The pack medic was in the infirmary, doing end-of-day inventory with the thoroughness of someone who treated supply management as a moral position. She looked up when Reyna came in, and her expression did the professional settling that Reyna had learned to read as Sera’s version of prepared to engage.

”I need to access my vehicle at the gate,” Reyna said. ”I have supplies in it. I’ve been postponing this and I shouldn’t have.”

Sera looked at her with the particular attention of a medical professional assessing a statement for what it wasn’t saying directly. ”How long?”

”Eleven days.”

Sera’s expression shifted, the brief, involuntary flicker of someone recalibrating a number. ”That’s longer than is advisable.”

”Yes.”

”You should have said something earlier.”

”Yes.” Reyna kept her voice even. ”I was being thoughtful of the pack’s comfort. In retrospect, the better approach would have been a brief uncomfortable conversation eleven days ago.”

Sera looked at her for a moment longer. Then she set down her inventory clipboard with the decisiveness of someone who had decided the next task. ”I’ll arrange gate access. The Alpha should know.”

”I’ll tell him,” Reyna said.

She found him in the training yard.

It was past nine in the evening, which was late for the yard, but Axel ran late sessions when he was working through something, she had learned this about him across eleven days of careful observation, the way he used physical work as processing space the way some people used silence or writing. He was working the heavy bag with the contained, rhythmic efficiency of something that had decided on a pace and was holding it.

He stopped when she came into the yard. Read her immediately, she was becoming accustomed to that, the speed and accuracy with which he processed physical information. His eyes moved across her face with a precision that was not intrusive but was comprehensive.

”You’re off,” he said.

”Eleven days,” she said.

He understood immediately. ”Your vehicle.”

”Sera is arranging gate access.” She kept her voice level. ”I wanted you to know before it happened rather than after.”

He stepped away from the bag. He was in training clothes, a worn shirt, no jacket despite the cold and the specific quality of his attention in this moment was the unguarded version, the one that appeared when he wasn’t in a formal setting with an audience. She found that version harder to look at than the formal one and didn’t examine why.

”Why didn’t you say something earlier?” he said. Not accusatory. The same quality as when he asked her things he genuinely wanted to understand.

”I was managing the pack’s comfort level.”

”At your own expense.”

”It seemed like the right priority.”

He looked at her for a moment with an expression that was doing something complex underneath its surface. ”It’s not,” he said. ”The alliance requires you functional. Everything else is secondary to that.” He paused. ”Including whatever the pack finds uncomfortable.”

She held his gaze. ”You should know that for the next few hours after I feed, the biological signature will be present in the east wing. Your pack will register it.”

”I’ll brief the overnight sentries.”

”It may produce some instinctive responses. Discomfort, agitation.”

”I’ll manage it.” He held her gaze. ”Reyna.” Something in his voice shifted register, minimal, but she caught it with the precision that eleven days of sharpened perception had provided. ”You don’t need to protect this pack from the reality of what you are.”

She was quiet for a moment.

”No,” she said. ”I suppose I don’t.

She went to the gate.

The relief of feeding, after eleven days, was not dramatic. It was quiet and fundamental the specific returning of capacity that she hadn’t fully acknowledged she’d lost, like blood flow returning to a numb limb. The sharpening at the edges of her perception smoothed out. The ambient warmth of the packhouse stopped pulling at her attention and receded to its appropriate background position.

She sat in the east wing room afterward and ran an honest internal inventory of the last eleven days and concluded, with the clarity that only came after the physical need was resolved, that she had been managing rather than thinking. That the packhouse had gotten inside her guard in a way that extended beyond the professional arrangement they had built.

She was precise about what this meant.

She was, after four centuries, not unacquainted with attraction. It was not the experience that was new. What was new, and what she catalogued with the careful attention of someone taking stock of something potentially dangerous, was the specific quality of this one. The way it operated not as heat, not as the immediate bright urgency of younger and less considered experiences, but as something slower and more fundamental. Something that had been building without announcement across eleven days of war rooms and midnight windows and the specific communication of a man who said things plainly and held positions steadily and looked at her as though she was exactly as complex as she actually was.

That was the thing. Most people, looking at her, saw what they expected to see — the vampire, the Voss heir, the pale and dangerous thing from the other side of the boundary. They looked at the category first and found the person, if they found her at all, afterward.

He had looked at the person first.

She was precise about the danger this represented. She was also, and this was new, uncertain whether danger was the only thing it represented.

She opened the intelligence logs and went back to work.

The logs blurred slightly after an hour, which was not a normal occurrence for her, and when she examined the cause she found it was not the logs or the hour but the specific direction her thoughts kept returning to without permission.

She closed the logs.

She sat in the east wing room in the dark and was, for the first time in a very long time, genuinely uncertain about something that wasn’t tactical.

It was not, she concluded, a comfortable feeling.

It was, she also concluded, probably not going away.
