The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The feeding arrangement had found its rhythm

Every three to four days, Reyna accessed her vehicle at the east gate during the early morning before the training session, and the overnight sentry, Calla had established a rotation of sentries who had been briefed and who managed the biology of it with the professional composure of people who had been given context and expected to use it, recorded it in the log with the same matter-of-fact notation as any other supply access.

The pack had adjusted. Not comfortably but the adjustment was real. The first two weeks had produced the instinctive disturbances that Reyna had anticipated. By the third week, the biological signature of her feeding had become familiar enough that the pack’s response had downgraded from active agitation to a lower-grade wariness that most of them managed without conscious processing.

Axel had managed the transition carefully and said nothing about it that didn’t need to be said. This was the most effective approach to most transitions structure them clearly, give people the context they needed, and then get out of the way while adjustment happened at its own pace.

What he had not managed, and had not anticipated managing, was what the feeding arrangement produced in his own secondary processing track.

He identified it on the morning of the twenty-ninth day.

He was in the war room when she came back in from the gate, she passed the war room window, which he could see from the position he used at the table. She moved with the specific quality that followed a feeding, the particular completeness of a biological system running at full capacity, the efficiency that the previous days’ sharpened edges resolved into.

He watched her pass the window and he thought about it directly, as he had been allowing himself to think about certain things directly.

She didn’t need him for this. It was one of the things he had noted and was now consciously examining, the specific way that what she was and what she required did not intersect with him in the obvious direction. She was not looking at him across the dinner table with a biological urgency that created a power dynamic he would have to manage. She was not dependent on his pack for the fundamental thing that her existence required.

She was, in this specific and important sense, not hunting in his territory.

He thought about what that meant for the specific quality of what was developing between them. About the distinction between a thing that existed because someone needed something and a thing that existed because of what two people were when they were in the same room.

The mark made it complicated in one direction. Her feeding arrangement resolved it in another.

He thought about this for approximately fifteen minutes, which was the length of time he could allocate to it before the morning work demanded his full return.

Then he went back to the work.

She came to the war room at seven with the last intelligence report from Lev and the updated convergence site mapping she had been building.

They worked through it together at the table, and the session ran its usual two hours, and at the end of it she sat back and said with the specific quality that announced she was stepping briefly outside the operational: ”You’ve been thinking about something all morning.”

He looked at her. ”Several things.”

”One specifically.” She held his eyes. ”You have a particular quality of attention when something is in active processing. The operational processing is always running, but when something additional is in the queue, there’s a register shift.”

He looked at her for a moment. ”You read me that precisely.”

”You read me precisely too,” she said. ”It goes both directions.”

He acknowledged this. ”I was thinking about the feeding arrangement,” he said. ”Specifically about what it means that you manage it the way you do.”

She looked at him. Processing, assessing. ”What conclusions did you reach?”

He held her gaze. ”That you’re here because of what this situation is. Not because of what I am or what the pack offers.” A pause. ”That’s a cleaner foundation than a lot of things get to start on.”

She was quiet for a moment. The specific quality of quiet that had weight and direction.

”I’ve been careful about that,” she said. ”For a long time. About the distinction between presence that’s contingent and presence that’s.....” She stopped at the same point she always stopped. The redirected sentence.

”Chosen,” he said.

She met his eyes. ”Yes.”

The war room held the moment.

”Two weeks,” he said.

”Two weeks,” she agreed.

They looked at each other across the table with the maps and the intelligence reports and the full weight of the convergence between them and something else that was not those things but existed alongside them with complete consistency.

Then she opened the next section of the site mapping and he turned to the patrol assessment and they went back to the work.

Two weeks.

Both of them counting.
