The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The training sessions had a structure now.

Axel had built it the way he built everything operational, with clear objectives, measurable outcomes, a progression from controlled conditions to escalating complexity. The stated purpose was mark-activation tolerance. The real purpose included that completely, and also included other things that neither of them discussed, because discussing them was not yet where either of them was, and because the work itself was genuine and demanding enough to occupy the full professional surface of every session.

They started at six. An hour, sometimes ninety minutes if the work required it. He led the structure and she adapted to it with the same precise responsiveness she brought to everything, not deference, but a willingness to work within a framework when the framework was sound.

The mark’s behavior under physical stress had developed a predictable pattern. Sharp activation under contact. Moderate activation under proximity below a meter. Low but constant activation throughout, which they were both managing as background. The sharp activations were the ones that required tolerance-building, the moments when the resonance between them spiked and pulled at attention simultaneously, which in a combat or high-stress context was a liability neither of them could afford.

The method was exposure and override. Create the activation deliberately, practice the override, repeat until the nervous system could maintain functional separation between what the mark was doing and what the situation required.

Simple in theory. In practice, it required sustained physical proximity and deliberate activation conditions and the specific focus of two people who were managing a significant amount of additional information in the same nervous system simultaneously.

He did not find it simple.

He found it necessary and he did it with his full discipline and he did not discuss what it was like to be in the second week of deliberately activating a biological resonance connection between himself and a woman who was becoming, without permission, the most interesting person he had encountered in twenty-nine years.

He did not discuss it. He showed up at five-thirty and worked.

She was learning his fighting style.

This was, he recognized, partly the session’s natural evolution and partly something that had developed organically from the specific kind of attention she brought. She watched how he moved with the same thorough observation she applied to intelligence data, building a complete model, noting patterns, identifying the architecture beneath the execution.

On the fourth session she said: ”You lead with your right shoulder more than you mean to.”

He stopped. Looked at her. ”I know.”

”Old injury?”

”Sixteen years old. A dominance challenge.” He rolled the shoulder. ”The habit formed before the injury was fully healed and I’ve been correcting it ever since.”

She looked at the shoulder with the clinical attention she gave things she was understanding. ”It’s not visible at rest. Only in the first seconds of engagement.”

”Which is the critical window.”

”Yes.” She looked at him. ”May I show you something?”

He held still.

She moved to his right side and placed one hand at his shoulder with the same careful, clinical precision she had used at the infirmary. Cold against his skin through the training shirt. She applied a specific pressure, not force, more like guidance, that shifted his shoulder’s resting position by two degrees.

”Hold that,” she said.

He held it.

”Now move.”

He ran the entry motion of the technique they had been working. The shift was small but the effect on the mechanics was significant, the lead with the right shoulder vanished. He ran it twice more.

”That’s from the hip,” she said. ”The shoulder habit is compensating for an earlier change in weight distribution. Correct from below and the shoulder corrects itself.”

He looked at her. ”Where did you learn that?”

”Four centuries of watching people fight.” A fractional pause that had something almost like humor in it. ”The hip connection was identified by a Mongolian warrior in the thirteenth century. He was teaching a fundamentally different discipline but the mechanical principle is universal.”

He was quiet for a moment. ”You knew him?”

”Briefly.” She returned to her position. ”He was very good and very young and the combination was expensive for him in the end.” She met his eyes. ”Shall we continue?”

They continued.

He thought about the specific quality of a person who carried four centuries of watched technique in their operational memory and delivered it with the practical precision of current knowledge. Who said he was very good and very young with the particular weight of someone for whom those words referred to a specific face, a specific person, a century and a half of distance.

He thought about what it cost to carry that kind of time.

He said nothing. He corrected from the hip and the shoulder corrected itself and the session ran another forty minutes.

When it ended and the yard was being reclaimed by the rest of the pack’s morning, he stood at the fence and looked at the eastern treeline and said, without turning:

”Does it get easier? The time.”

She was quiet for long enough that he thought she might not answer.

”It gets different,” she said. ”The things that matter stay. The things that don’t, fall away. The ratio improves.” A pause. ”Whether that’s easier depends on what you valued in the weight of it.”

He turned and looked at her.

She held his gaze with the steady composure of someone who had just said something personal without planning to and had decided to stand by it rather than qualify it away.

”Come to the war room at seven,” he said. ”Lev’s latest report came in last night. We need to map it against the convergence timeline.”

”Yes,” she said.

He walked back to the packhouse.

Behind him she stood at the fence for a moment, in the thin morning light, and looked at the eastern trees.

The mark burned, low and constant, between them.
