The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

On the fifth night before the convergence, neither of them could work.

It was not a decision. The war room was prepared, the maps current, the final operation details resolved into the specific, unchangeable shape that plans took when they had been built as far as they could be built and were now simply waiting for execution. There was nothing left to construct. There was only the waiting, which both of them managed differently, and which the east wing room held with its usual honest quality.

He had come to the evening session out of habit rather than necessity, and she was at the desk with the intelligence logs in the same condition present, occupied, not actually working.

”Tell me something,” he said.

She looked up.

”About before,” he said. ”Not the operation. Not the clan. Something else.”

She held his gaze for a moment. Then she closed the log.

”What do you want to know?” she asked. Not deflecting. Genuinely asking, giving him the direction.

He thought about what he actually wanted to know, which was considerable and could not be entirely asked in one evening. He picked the thing that had been present in the peripheral since the thirty-third day.

”After the capture,” he said. ”After your father’s people found you. What happened after.”

She was quiet for a moment that was not avoidance. ”My father wanted to move against the faction immediately,” she said. ”He had the authority and the resources. The faction was small then four members, poorly organized, the ideology fully formed but the infrastructure minimal.” She looked at the wall. ”I asked him not to.”

”Why?”

”Because moving against them when they were small would have scattered them. Four people who believed what they believed, scattered into the clan’s broader population, were harder to track than four people organized into a recognizable structure.” She paused. ”I wanted to watch them. Understand the full shape before acting.”

”You were twenty-five,” he said. ”You had just spent eight days in their hands.”

”Yes.” She met his eyes. ”My father thought I was wrong. He was certain I was wrong.” A pause. ”I was right about the strategy. He was right about the cost.”

He held her gaze. ”What was the cost?”

”Sixty years of watching,” she said. ”Sixty years of the faction growing in exactly the way I had anticipated, acquiring exactly the resources I had mapped, building toward exactly the event I had predicted.” She looked at her hands on the desk. ”I was right about all of it. The strategic shape was exactly what I described to my father the week after they released me.” A pause. ”What I did not account for was what sixty years of watching something you understood completely would do to the person doing the watching.”

He was very still.

”It hollowed me out,” she said simply. ”That is the honest word for it. I watched the Hollow build for sixty years because I was the one who could see it most clearly and therefore the one most responsible for monitoring it, and the watching was correct and necessary and the most useful thing I could contribute, and it cost me something I did not have a name for until I was already missing it.”

”What was it?” he asked.

She looked at him with the specific quality of a person who had arrived at something important through a long and expensive route and was deciding to say it plainly.

”Distance,” she said. ”I lost the ability to be inside my own life. I could watch everything the clan, the faction, the relationships around me, the decades passing but I was watching from outside. The way you watch a map.” She paused. ”I had not been inside my own experience for a long time before I walked through your gate.”

He was quiet.

”And now?” he said.

She looked at him for a moment.

”Inside,” she said. ”More than I have been in a long time.” A pause that had weight and honesty in it. ”It is uncomfortable. And it is....” She stopped.

”What?”

”Necessary,” she said. ”That is the word.” She held his eyes. ”It is necessary.”

He sat with that. He sat with what she had given him and what it meant that she had given it and what the specific shape of a person who had spent sixty years outside their own life looked like when they came back inside it.

He thought about what she had said about distance and the watching, and about what his own fourteen-month absence had been and what it had cost, and about the specific recognition of finding another person who understood a particular kind of expensive aloneness from the inside.

”I was gone for fourteen months,” he said.

She waited.

”When I came back and Daren asked me how bad things were, I said I was glad to be home.” He looked at the desk. ”That was true and incomplete. The true and complete version is that I spent fourteen months trying to decide whether the weight of this place and these people and the specific thing I am to them was something I could keep carrying, and I came home because the answer was yes and also because.....” He paused. ”Because the alternative was being outside my own life indefinitely. And I had had enough of that.”

She looked at him with the expression she used for things she was understanding at a level below the analytical.

”Yes,” she said quietly. ”Enough of that.”

The room held the moment.

Then he said, ”Five days.”

And she said, ”Five days.”

And neither of them moved, and the night outside pressed against the east wing window, and the convergence sat five days ahead like a door, and whatever was on the other side of the door was real and waiting and five days away.

They sat in the east wing until past midnight, talking about things that had nothing to do with operations, and the night was better for it.
