The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The walk back through the corridor was the longest ten minutes of Axel’s recent memory.

Not because of the distance. The physical distance was nothing a few hundred meters of dark forest, familiar terrain even in its unfamiliar quality, manageable at any pace. The length of it came from what was happening inside him as he moved, which was considerable and which he could not address while moving through enemy-adjacent territory with a vampire beside him and a compromised warrior waiting at the treeline.

Brek saw them coming and went immediately still in the way experienced wolves went still when they encountered something they hadn’t been briefed for. His eyes moved from Axel to Reyna and back to Axel, and he said nothing, which was the correct instinct.

”She’s with me,” Axel said as he crossed the boundary line. The words were simple and carried everything they needed to carry. ”Go ahead to the packhouse. Tell Daren I’m behind you and I need the infirmary cleared and Elder Malka.”

Brek went without asking questions. Another correct instinct. Axel had always valued the warriors who understood that the moment for questions was before or after, not during.

He and Reyna followed at a pace that was slower than he would have chosen slower because the burning in his neck had not resolved cleanly with the blood exchange, had instead shifted into something more complex, moving in pulses along the right side of his jaw and down through his shoulder into the muscles of his upper back. He kept his posture straight and his stride even and did not acknowledge it, because the forest between the corridor and the packhouse was not the place to show physical vulnerability.

She walked beside him without comment. But she stayed on his right side, which was where the spreading sensation was, and he understood that was not coincidence.

The packhouse was lit when they came through the tree line into the grounds. Daren was on the steps, he had clearly run rather than walked from the moment Brek reached him, and he had gathered exactly the people Axel would have gathered if he’d had time to send a full message. Petra was there. Calla. Two of the packhouse medics.

Daren looked at Reyna.

Then he looked at Axel’s neck.

His expression did several things in rapid succession, all of them controlled, all of them visible to anyone who knew him well enough to read the small register he operated in. Axel knew him that well.

”Infirmary,” Axel said.

They went inside.

The packhouse infirmary was a ground-floor room with good light and practical furniture, examination table, medical supply cabinets, a long counter where the pack’s two trained medics worked when the situation required more than field treatment. Both medics were present, a woman named Sera and a younger man called Phin, and they looked at the marks on Axel’s neck with the focused attention of people setting everything else aside.

”Don’t touch it,” Reyna said from the doorway. She said it without aggression but with enough certainty that both medics paused and looked at her. ”The compound in the marks is reactive to wolf healing compounds. Standard pack medicine will accelerate the spread rather than contain it.”

Sera looked at Axel.

He gave a slight nod.

Sera stepped back and looked at Reyna with the expression of a professional who did not enjoy being redirected in her own infirmary but was capable of prioritizing patient outcome over professional pride. ”Then what do we do?”

Reyna moved into the room. She looked at the marks again, leaning in with the same clinical attention she had used in the corridor, close enough that Axel could feel the specific cold that came off her at proximity. She pressed two fingers to the skin around the marks without touching the marks themselves. ”The compound needs to be drawn out rather than countered. It’s designed to sit in wolf tissue and break down the regenerative response. Standard detox approaches won’t work because the compound bonds to the cellular layer.”

”How do you know this much about it?” Petra asked from the corner of the room.

”Because I spent six months analyzing it before I came to your Alpha.” She looked up from Axel’s neck. ”The Hollow has been developing this compound for two years. They tested it on three wolves before your packmate in the ravine.” A beat. ”I have records of the tests. I can provide them.”

The room was very still.

Axel looked at the ceiling for a moment, breathing through the pulse of burning that moved through his neck on a fifteen-second cycle. Then he looked at Sera. ”What’s the draw-out process?”

Reyna explained it. It was detailed and specific and required two things the packhouse had in supply and one thing it didn’t, which she produced from inside her jacket with the matter-of-fact quality of someone who had prepared for contingencies. A small glass vial of something dark that caught the light in ways that regular liquid didn’t.

He asked what it was.

”Refined vampire enzyme,” she said. ”It dissolves the compound’s bond to wolf tissue without triggering the reactive spread. It’s applied topically and it takes approximately four hours to work completely.” She set the vial on the counter. ”Your medic applies it. I can supervise if she wants the guidance.”

Sera looked at the vial. Then at Reyna. Then at Axel with an expression that was asking a question she was too professional to say out loud.

”Do it,” Axel said.

He sat through the process with the patience that was one of his more useful qualities the ability to be still for long periods when stillness was what the situation required. Sera applied the enzyme in careful passes while Reyna guided her through the technique, and the room held its particular charged silence of a space where multiple people were thinking hard and saying little.

Daren sat against the far wall and watched everything with the alert stillness of a man keeping inventory.

After forty minutes Sera stepped back and said the application was complete and the compound should begin resolving within the hour. She gave Axel a list of indicators to watch for that would suggest the process wasn’t working as intended and a second list of indicators that would confirm it was. Then she and Phin stepped out with the professionalism of people who understood when a room needed to be smaller.

Petra left too. Calla.

Daren stayed.

Reyna moved to the counter and began returning the vial to her jacket. Axel looked at her from the examination table and thought about the twelve to sixteen hours she had mentioned and about the door that had opened in the room he hadn’t known was there and about what the pack’s biology was going to make of the next half-day.

”The connection,” he said. ”The temporary one. What does it feel like?”

She paused with the vial halfway into her jacket. She looked at him with the careful expression of someone choosing precision over speed. ”Awareness,” she said. ”Your emotional state will be faintly present to me and mine to you. Not readable in detail. More like weather you’ll know the general condition without specifics.”

Daren made a sound that was not quite a word.

”For twelve hours,” Axel said.

”Twelve to sixteen. Then it severs naturally.” She tucked the vial away. ”It won’t compromise your judgment. It’s not a control mechanism. Think of it as an open window rather than a door.”

An open window between his mind and a vampire’s.

He thought about what Malka would say. He thought about what his father would have said. He thought about the burning that had been moving through his neck and shoulder like a slow tide and what it would have done to him over the next several days without intervention.

He thought about the two vampires in the corridor and the speed of the one who had breached his guard, and the fact that Reyna had been between him and both of them in a fraction of a second with her back to him.

”The two in the corridor,” he said. ”Hollow?”

”Yes.

”They knew you.”

”They know me very well.” Her voice was even. ”I was supposed to be bringing you into the corridor tonight, not warning you away from it. As far as certain members of the Hollow are concerned, my cooperation with this alliance is already a significant problem.” She paused. ”Tonight accelerated their timeline considerably.”

He looked at her. ”Meaning.”

”Meaning they know you’ve been warned. They know their compound has been countered. And they know I’m the reason for both.” She met his eyes steadily. ”Whatever window we had before they move to the next phase has narrowed substantially.”

Axel absorbed that.

Outside the infirmary window the pack grounds were dark and quiet, and somewhere in the forest beyond them the corridor held its patient silence, and somewhere inside that silence the Hollow was recalculating.

He could feel it. Not literally the awareness Reyna had described hadn’t fully settled yet. But in the way he had always felt things, the deep wolf-knowing that operated below thought, he could feel the shape of a situation that had changed irrevocably in the last two hours.

The bite that shouldn’t have happened had happened.

What came of it was no longer in the territory of prevention.

It was in the territory of management, which was a different skill set entirely, and one he intended to apply with everything he had.
