The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Nobody saw Daren leave.

That was the thing that stayed with Axel afterward not the betrayal itself, which he could eventually construct a logic around, but the leaving. Fourteen years of standing at each other’s backs, and Daren had walked out of Ashveil territory in the early hours of a Thursday morning without a word, without a note, without the smallest signal that something irreversible was happening.

The gate log showed his truck clearing the eastern checkpoint at 3:47 a.m.

Axel read the timestamp three times.

He had been awake at 3:47 a.m. He had been sitting at his desk forty meters away, working through intelligence reports, and Daren had driven past him in the dark and not stopped.

Petra brought him the log at six in the morning with the expression of someone delivering news they wished they could give differently. She set the paper on his desk and stepped back and said nothing, because there was nothing efficient to say, and Petra was a person who understood the value of not filling silence with noise.

Axel read the log. He set it down.

”Who else knows?” he asked.

”The gate guard, myself, and you.”

”Keep it there for now.” He stood. ”Pull his access codes. All of them the war room, the patrol database, the eastern boundary alert system. Do it quietly and do it in the next hour.”

Petra left.

He stood at the window for a moment the eastern window, the one that faced the forest, the one he had been standing at the night he first saw Reyna at the treeline. He looked at the forest and thought about Daren, and about the specific way that trust, when it broke, broke in the direction of the thing you had already lost rather than the thing you were trying to hold.

He went to find Reyna.

She was awake. she was always awake when he came to her before dawn, another thing he had noticed and filed. She read the situation in his face before he said anything, which was one of the things about her that still occasionally caught him off guard the speed of her assessment, the way she processed the signals his body sent before he had decided which ones he was sending.

”Someone’s gone,” she said.

”Daren.”

Something moved in her expression. Not surprise exactly. The confirmation of something she had seen building.

”He went east,” Axel said. ”Through the eastern checkpoint. Which means either he’s crossed the corridor on his own, or he’s meeting someone at the boundary.” He looked at her. ”Is there anyone in the Hollow he could have contacted without going through the corridor directly?”

Reyna was quiet for a moment that had calculation in it. ”There’s a secondary contact point,” she said carefully. ”A location they use for communication with outside parties. It’s not inside the corridor, it’s on the human road that runs along the territory’s eastern edge.” She paused. ”I didn’t tell you about it because I wasn’t certain it was still active.”

He held her gaze. ”What else aren’t you certain about?”

It was a harder question than it sounded. She heard the hardness in it and didn’t deflect from it. ”I’m certain about everything I’ve told you. I’m less certain about the things I haven’t seen directly in the last three weeks.” Her voice was even. ”I’ve been inside your packhouse, Axel. My access to what the Hollow is doing in real time has limits.”

”I know that.” He had known that. He had built it into his operational model from the beginning, which didn’t make it less sharp right now. ”I need to know if Daren reaching out to the Hollow changes their timeline.”

”If he’s giving them internal pack information....” She stopped. The implication finished itself.

”Then the next move comes sooner,” Axel said.

”Yes.”

He sat down. He didn’t often sit in her room their conversations usually happened at the window or standing, both of them in the particular posture of people who hadn’t fully decided it was safe to settle. He sat now because his body needed a moment that his mind wasn’t going to grant him.

Reyna sat across from him without being asked, which was also something she hadn’t done before.

”He did it because of me,” she said. Not as guilt as assessment.

”He did it because of his own choices. Don’t carry what belongs to him.”

She looked at him with those deep-water eyes. ”How long had he been your Beta?”

”Fourteen years.”

She said nothing. She didn’t offer comfort, which was correct he didn’t need comfort, and she was perceptive enough to know that. What she offered instead was simply her presence, steady and unperformed, in the chair across from him. It was enough. It was, in that specific moment, more than enough.

He stayed for ten minutes. Then he stood and went back to work.

The investigation took two days to build a complete picture. What emerged was careful and damning.

Daren had not acted impulsively. The contact with the Hollow had begun nine days earlier four days after the common room meeting, which meant it had begun not in the immediate heat of disagreement but in the cold, considered space after. He had passed three pieces of information: the pack’s eastern patrol rotation schedule, the location of the corridor access points Ashveil used for intelligence gathering, and Reyna’s presence in the packhouse including the specific wing and her access to briefings.

The patrol rotation was recoverable. Axel changed it immediately and ran a randomized schedule for the following two weeks. The access point information was more serious. He pulled two of the four monitoring positions and relocated them, which created temporary gaps that he covered with increased personnel.

Reyna’s exposure was the part he couldn’t recover.

The Hollow already knew she was here. Had known for nine days. Had been building their response to that knowledge for nine days while Axel was building his without knowing the other side already held the information.

He stood in the war room on the second evening and looked at the map and did the math that the situation made, and the math was not good.

Soren, standing across the table, said what both of them were thinking. ”They’ll move on her.”

”Yes.”

”Timeline?”

”Days. Maybe less.” Axel looked at the eastern markers. ”They want her back. Not for information, she’s been gone too long for operational intelligence. They want her because of what she is.” He thought of what she had told him, early in their first conversation. The ritual. The artifacts. Her blood as the key that the Hollow’s collection required. ”If they take her...”

”We don’t let them take her,” Soren said.

Axel looked at him. Old Soren, grey-bearded, fifty years of service, who had been in the common room meeting looking at Axel with a tiredness that had been close to judgment. Who was standing here now with his bridge cable arms folded and his face set in the direction of a problem that needed solving.

”No,” Axel agreed. ”We don’t.”

He pulled the full senior warrior circle. He laid out everything. Daren’s betrayal, the timeline, the threat to Reyna that was now an active operational problem rather than a background risk. He watched their faces absorb it.

The pack was divided. That hadn’t changed. But a concrete threat, a specific enemy, a defined problem with edges that was something Ashveil wolves knew how to respond to with a unity that philosophical disagreement couldn’t produce.

By midnight, the packhouse had reconfigured itself around a new posture.

Reyna, when he told her the full picture, listened without interruption. When he finished, she was quiet for a moment. Then she said, ”I need to be useful. Not protected. Useful.”

”I know,” he said.

”Then let me run with you tomorrow.”

He looked at her.

”The eastern line,” she said. ”Let me show you what I know about how they move. Where they approach from. What they’ll send first.” Her eyes were steady on his. ”You need what’s in my head, Axel. Not sitting in this room.”

He thought about Malka’s warnings. About distance. About what his father would have said.

Then he thought about nine days of Daren’s quiet betrayal, and the Hollow’s timeline collapsing toward them, and what Reyna had given this pack without being asked.

”Dawn,” he said. ”Eastern line. You run with me.”

She nodded once.

Outside, the forest waited in its old, patient dark.
