The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

On the twenty-fifth day, the formal arrangement was due for its first review.

The agreement they had signed in blood specified a two-week review point, which had passed on day fourteen and been extended by mutual, undiscussed agreement as the convergence plan developed and the timeline compressed and the operational necessity of the alliance became more rather than less evident. The second review was at day twenty-five, which Daren brought to Axel’s attention with the careful neutrality of a man noting a calendar date that had operational significance.

Axel called the review meeting. War room, senior circle plus elders, Reyna present but not at the table, seated at the room’s edge in the position she had occupied at several such meetings, which communicated participant status without the visual language of the table’s primary positions.

The case for continuing was straightforward. The convergence plan was built. The intelligence from Reyna’s network had been verified across multiple data points. The Russ Yodin situation had produced an operational asset. The artifact’s location was confirmed. The timeline was four weeks.

Soren made it. He did so without enthusiasm, which was Soren’s way, but with the flat precision of a man reporting what the numbers said. The alliance was working. The plan required it to continue.

Calla made the same case from the angle of pack security, specific incidents that the alliance’s intelligence had allowed them to prevent, specific vulnerabilities that Reyna’s knowledge had helped them address.

Daren said nothing, which was his version of agreement.

Petra said one thing. ”The operation requires her. After the operation, we reassess.” She looked around the table. ”That’s my position.”

Malka spoke last. She looked at Reyna, not at Axel, which was itself a communication. ”You could leave,” she said. ”The plan is built. The operational structure is in place. Your physical presence here is no longer strictly necessary for the plan to proceed.”

The room was very still.

Reyna looked at Malka. ”No,” she said. ”It isn’t.”

”Then why do you stay?”

The question had the specific weight of an elder’s question, not hostile, not rhetorical, but genuine and therefore requiring a genuine answer.

Reyna was quiet for a moment.

”Because the plan has gaps that aren’t visible on paper,” she said. ”Because the Hollow’s operational pattern will shift in the next four weeks and I’m better positioned than anyone else in this room to identify when and how. Because the contingency extraction point for my position in the operation requires me to understand the packhouse’s alarm response pattern in real time.” She paused. ”And because....” A fractional stop. The smallest visible acknowledgment of a sentence being redirected. ”Because leaving now would be a less useful choice than staying.”

Malka looked at her for a long moment.

Then she looked at Axel.

He returned the look with the calm that eight decades of his elder’s wisdom deserved.

”The alliance continues,” he said.

Nobody argued.

Reyna stayed.

That evening, after the meeting cleared and the war room emptied, Axel remained at the map. He heard the door open and knew without turning who it was.

”Malka’s question,” he said.

”Yes.” She came to stand at the other end of the map.

”You stopped yourself.”

”I gave the accurate answer.”

He turned from the map. ”You gave an accurate answer.” He held her eyes. ”There’s a distinction.”

She looked at him with the expression she wore when she had decided to stop processing and simply be present in the moment, which was one of the rarer expressions and one of the ones that landed with the most force.

”Yes,” she said. ”There is.”

He looked at her. The mark burned its low warmth. The room held its charged silence.

”I’m glad you’re staying,” he said.

He said it simply. Without qualification. And then he turned back to the map, because simplicity was enough for this moment and adding to it would diminish it, and he was a man who understood when something was complete.

Behind him, after a moment, she said: ”So am I.”

She came to stand beside him at the map.

They worked until midnight.

The clock ran toward the convergence.

They both felt it, through whatever channel the mark had opened between them, and neither of them named it, and it ran anyway.
