The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

He didn’t sleep.

He lay in the Alpha’s quarters with the window closed and the moonlight coming through anyway, because the moon on a full night didn’t acknowledge closed windows, and he stared at the ceiling and thought about the smell of her blood and the way his wolf had responded to it and what that response meant in the context of everything he knew and everything he had decided.

The wolf was still restless at dawn. Still oriented toward the east wing with the particular focused attention of an animal that had identified something significant and was waiting for instruction on what to do about it.

He gave it no instruction. He got up, dressed, and went to the war room.

Reyna came to him at nine.

She came to the war room rather than waiting for him to come to her, which was notable she had been respectful of the packhouse’s operational spaces, entering them when invited rather than on her own initiative. She knocked and came in when he answered, and she carried two mugs of coffee, which meant she had gone through the kitchen and asked, which meant she had navigated a significant amount of pack territory and pack scrutiny on her own this morning.

He looked at the mugs. ”How was the kitchen?”

”Informative.” She set one mug in front of him and sat down. ”Your cook, Brea.... she has decided I’m acceptable.”

”Brea doesn’t decide things quickly.”

”No. She watched me for ten minutes and then handed me your coffee and told me how you take it.” Reyna looked at him steadily. ”She also told me that you haven’t slept properly in six weeks and that someone should tell you to stop working at three in the morning.”

He looked at her. ”She told you that.”

”She told me that.” A pause. ”I think she was telling me something else as well. Through the coffee.”

He picked up the mug and drank and thought about Brea, who had fed him since he was seven years old and communicated primarily through food and pointed silences. He thought she probably had been telling Reyna something else.

He set the mug down. ”Last night....”

”Last night was the moon,” she said. Directly, cleanly, the way she addressed things she had decided not to allow to become complicated through avoidance. ”The moon affects you. Her blood is what it is. Both of those things were elevated circumstances.”

”That’s one way to frame it.”

”It’s the accurate frame.” She held his gaze. ”What happened on the ridge was real. I’m not dismissing it. I’m saying it doesn’t have to mean more than the situation produced.”

He looked at her for a long moment. ”And if I think it does mean more?”

The air in the room shifted.

She was very still in the way she went still when something arrived that she had prepared for but found harder than the preparation suggested. ”Then we need to be careful,” she said. ”More careful than we’ve been.”

”We’ve been careful.”

”We’ve been controlled. That’s different.”

He conceded that with a slight inclination of his head. She was right. Control and care were related but not identical, and what had been operating between them in the east wing room and on the ridge and in the narrow forest trail on the way back from the first hunt was something that had required increasing amounts of control and was beginning to press against the limits of what control could contain.

”I need to understand something,” he said. He turned his chair slightly toward her, which changed the geometry of the conversation from professional to something more direct. ”What you are, the Voss bloodline, specifically. What I smelled last night. I’ve been near vampires before. Not often, but enough to know the reference. It didn’t....” He stopped. ”It didn’t do that.”

She was quiet. Something moved through her expression recognition of a question she had been waiting for him to ask.

”The Voss line is old,” she said. ”Older than most clans in this region. The bloodline carries properties that accumulate across generations. Power, essentially concentrated in the blood.” She held his gaze. ”What you sensed last night was that concentration. In a wolf as old-bloodlined as you are, with an Alpha’s sensitivity, the response would be....” She paused, choosing the word. ”Significant.”

”That’s a careful way to describe it.”

”Yes.”

”Is it always that strong? Or was that the moon.”

She didn’t answer immediately. He watched her consider the answer, watched the calculation that moved behind her eyes. She was deciding how honest to be, which was unusual she was generally one of the most direct people he had encountered, and the hesitation told him the honest answer was one she wasn’t sure she wanted to give.

”It’s always present,” she said finally. ”The moon amplified it. But it’s always there.”

He let that sit for a moment.

”When I was in the corridor with you,” he said slowly. ”The first time we moved through it together. I felt something then too. I put it down to the corridor’s atmosphere.”

”It wasn’t the corridor.”

”No,” he agreed. ”I don’t think it was.”

The war room was very quiet. Outside, the packhouse was coming to its morning life voices, footsteps, the distant sounds of the training yard starting up. The ordinary texture of a community beginning its day, pressing against the walls of this room where two people were having a conversation that had moved well past operational.

”Axel.” His name in her voice carried something he hadn’t heard in it before. A careful weight. ”What I carry in my blood, it’s not just power. It’s what the Hollow wants to use for the ritual. If you allow yourself to be drawn toward it, you become a risk. Not to me. To yourself.”

He looked at her. ”That’s the second time you’ve warned me about something that affects me rather than you.”

”I’m aware.”

”Most people in your position would use what they had.”

”I’m not most people.” She held his gaze without wavering. ”And you’re not most Alphas. Which is exactly why I won’t use it.”

He looked at her for a long moment the full, unguarded attention he gave to things that mattered. She looked back with the steady deep-water eyes that had been looking back at him honestly since the first day she walked into the west reception room.

Then he reached across the table.

He touched the back of her hand brief, deliberate, light. The contact lasted three seconds.

The power moved through the point of contact the way current moved through a connection. Not overwhelming. Not the full force of the ridge and the moonlight. Something quieter than that a hum, a recognition, his wolf going absolutely silent in the particular silence of an animal that has found the thing it was looking for and gone calm.

She didn’t pull her hand back.

She breathed, a small, almost imperceptible breath and looked at their hands and then at his face.

”That,” he said quietly, ”is not something I’m going to be careful about indefinitely.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

”I know,” she said.

It wasn’t permission. It wasn’t a decision. It was an honest statement from someone who had stopped pretending the territory between them was as manageable as she had initially assessed it to be.

He drew his hand back. He picked up the coffee mug. He looked at the map on the wall with its black markers and its calculations and its lines that meant danger in every direction.

”Tell me what you know about the ritual’s second phase,” he said. Back to work. Back to the shape of the threat and the time they had left.

She told him.

But her hand stayed where it was on the table for longer than was necessary, and neither of them mentioned it, and the morning moved around them with its ordinary sounds, and something between them settled into a new configuration that both of them understood was permanent.

The wolf in him was quiet.

For the first time in six weeks, it was completely quiet.

He noted that.

He didn’t know yet what to do with it, but he noted it with the full, clear eyed honesty he brought to everything that mattered.

Outside, the forest stood in the ordinary morning light, patient as always, holding its own counsel.
