The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Sleep became a complicated negotiation.

Not between them, between Axel and his own mind, which had developed the inconvenient habit of running its most thorough processing sessions between the hours of midnight and four in the morning. He would lie in the Alpha’s quarters staring at the ceiling with the even breathing of someone who was managing rest rather than experiencing it, and his mind would run inventory, the southern border situation, the Hollow’s timeline, the artifact’s location, the plan taking shape in the war room, the pack’s current emotional temperature, the seventeen things that could go wrong with the next phase, and then, at the end of that list, without permission, her.

Not dramatically. Not in the way that would have concerned him if it had been dramatic. Just present. A specific awareness at the end of the inventory list, the way a light stays on in a room you’ve left, not demanding attention, but visible in the peripheral.

He addressed it the way he addressed things that didn’t serve the current operational requirements. He noted it, declined to engage with it, and went back to the inventory.

This worked approximately seventy percent of the time.

The packhouse at night had its own particular character.

Axel had always known this, had grown up in it, had learned the sounds and rhythms of a sleeping pack from childhood. The specific quality of quiet that three hundred wolves created when they were resting, the bone-deep stillness that had nothing empty about it, full of the breathing and the warmth and the subtle biological communication of a community doing what communities did when they let their guard down for the night.

He walked it when he couldn’t sleep. Not always, not every night. But often enough that the overnight sentries knew his footsteps and didn’t react to them.

On the eighth night of Reyna’s formal presence in the packhouse, he came around the corner of the eastern corridor at two in the morning and found her at the window at the corridor’s end.

She was standing in the dark, not doing anything in particular. Just present at the window with the stillness she held at rest different from the human stillness of sleep, more fundamental than that. Like a thing that had decided to stop spending energy on the performance of continuous motion.

She turned when he came around the corner. She had heard him long before that, he understood.

”You don’t sleep,” he said. It wasn’t an accusation. Observation.

”Not in the way you mean.” She turned back to the window. ”A few hours, occasionally. Mostly I don’t need it.”

He came and stood at the other end of the window. Outside, the grounds were dark and still, the forest a black mass along the perimeter, the moon somewhere behind cloud cover that had been building since evening.

”What do you do instead?” he asked.

”Think.” A pause. ”Read, when I have something to read. Watch.” She glanced at him briefly. ”You’re not sleeping either.”

”I sleep. Just not between midnight and four.”

”Consistent schedule.”

”Inconvenient one.”

She was quiet for a moment. ”What do you think about? During those hours.”

He looked out the window. He thought about the honest answer and the diplomatic answer and chose something between them. ”Everything that needs solving,” he said. ”And the order it needs to be solved in.”

”And when you’ve finished that list.”

He didn’t answer immediately. The silence between them held the question without pressing it.

”Other things,” he said.

She didn’t push it. Which was, he was finding, one of the qualities he was most grateful for in her,she asked precisely as far as she wanted to know and stopped there, without the anxious forward momentum that most people brought to silence. She let silence be what it was.

They stood at the window for another few minutes. The cloud cover shifted and the moon came through briefly, enough light to show the grounds in silver and shadow, the trees at the perimeter sketched in pale light against the darker mass of the forest beyond.

”Tell me about him,” Axel said. ”Your father.”

She was quiet for long enough that he thought she might not answer.

”Careful,” she said finally. ”That’s the word that fits him best. He did everything with great care, decisions, relationships, the running of the clan. He believed that power was a thing you held in trust rather than owned, and that the quality of your stewardship of it was the measure of your leadership.” A pause. ”He would have done exactly what he did, stepped between the Hollow and the clan membership when they began recruiting and he would have known it was going to cost him, and he would have done it anyway.” She looked out at the moon-touched grounds. ”That’s either nobility or stubbornness. I’ve never decided which.”

”Both, probably,” Axel said. ”Those things tend to travel together.”

She glanced at him. Something in the look was briefly, genuinely amused. ”Your father?”

”Same diagnosis.” He looked at the forest. ”He died four years ago. Defending the northern border against an encroachment that was smaller than what he sent against it, he could have let the warriors handle it. He went himself because he believed the Alpha belonged at the front.” A pause. ”I buried him at the northern ridge. I was twenty-five and I’d been his Beta for three years and I thought I understood what leading this pack meant.” He was quiet for a moment. ”It took two more years to understand that I had understood the mechanics and missed most of the weight.”

She was listening with the complete quality of attention she brought to things that mattered to her.

”The weight,” she said.

”Of being the thing that holds.” He turned slightly from the window. ”Not just making decisions. Being the fixed point. The thing that doesn’t move when everything else is moving.”

She looked at him steadily. ”That’s a significant thing to carry alone.”

He met her eyes in the moonlight that came through the window and said nothing. Not because he had no response but because some things communicated more clearly in the absence of words than in their presence.

They stood at the window until the moon went back behind the clouds.

Then he said goodnight and walked back down the corridor, and he did not look back, and when he reached the Alpha’s quarters and lay down and looked at the ceiling, the inventory that his mind ran was shorter than it had been before and resolved faster into the edges of actual sleep.

He noted that. Filed it.

And slept.

On the tenth night, the tension in the packhouse shifted register.

It didn’t come from the eastern corridor or the southern border or the Hollow’s tightening timeline. It came from within, which was in some ways more difficult to manage because internal pressure didn’t have a fixed point you could position warriors around.

It started with a young wolf named Fen, nineteen years old, newly ascended from junior to senior pack status, with all the hormonal volatility that recent dominance testing produced in young males. He had been managing Reyna’s presence in the packhouse with visible discomfort since the arrangement began, and on the tenth evening he encountered her in the main corridor between dinner and the nightly briefing and said something.

Axel didn’t hear what he said. He heard the aftermath, the particular quality of silence that dropped into a space after something had been said that couldn’t be unsaid.

He came around the corner to find Fen standing in the corridor with the specific posture of a young wolf who had committed to a position and was now processing the consequences of it, and Reyna standing three feet away looking at him with the composed stillness that was her default and which, Axel had been learning, was also one of her more effective tools, the absolute refusal to give a reactive surface for aggression to land on.

He looked at Fen.

Fen looked at him.

The young wolf understood immediately what was about to happen. To his credit, he didn’t attempt to explain or justify. He stood his ground, which was the correct instinct even if the preceding action had been wrong.

”With me,” Axel said. Not loudly.

They went to the training yard. Axel spent twenty minutes with Fen, and none of the twenty minutes involved a raised voice or visible anger, because those things were theater and theater wasn’t what this required. What it required was clarity, delivered with the specific weight that an Alpha’s clarity carried, about what the packhouse was and what it wasn’t and what conduct meant in a community that had agreed to operate by a certain standard.

Fen left the training yard chastened and clear and importantly not humiliated, which was an essential distinction. Humiliation produced either resentment or deference, neither of which Axel wanted in a young wolf who still had decades of pack membership ahead of him.

He went to find Reyna.

She was in the east wing, at the desk, working through the intelligence logs they maintained jointly. She looked up when he came in.

”You didn’t need to do that,” she said.

”Yes I did.” He sat down across from her. ”Not for you, specifically. For the standard. If I let it go, it becomes the floor.”

She looked at him for a moment. ”Your pack doesn’t want me here.”

”Some of them don’t. Some of them are coming around. Most of them are waiting to see how this resolves before they decide.” He leaned back. ”That’s normal. It’s manageable.”

”You spend a significant amount of your energy managing things that exist because of me.”

He met her eyes. ”I spend energy managing things that exist because the Hollow is running a campaign that required a response. You’re the response.” A pause. ”The energy is worth it.”

She held his gaze for a moment with the particular quality of attention she gave to things she was deciding whether to believe.

Then she looked back at the logs.

They worked in the east wing until past midnight, building the plan that needed to be built, and the tension that lived in the packhouse around them was something they both felt and neither named, and the nights kept coming, one after another, charged and necessary and increasingly difficult to file away without remainder.
