The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Three days before the convergence, the Hollow closed in from two directions simultaneously.

The first direction was expected. Cael had identified the broken blood oath, Reyna had predicted the timeline accurately and the response was an increase in corridor surveillance that the eastern patrol picked up on the morning of the thirty-ninth day. Four outer patrol points where there had been two, moving in a pattern that compressed the buffer zone between the boundary and the midpoint. The Hollow was looking for Seri’s exit route.

They wouldn’t find it. Reyna had brought her through a path that avoided every established monitoring point, using the specific knowledge of the corridor that four centuries of movement through it had built. The route was clean. But the increased surveillance complicated the operation’s approach vector in ways that required the map to be redrawn.

Axel spent the morning with Daren and Petra on the revised geometry, working the new patrol positions into the movement plan with the precise, patient methodology of people who had built enough contingencies to absorb significant changes without losing the operation’s core structure.

The second direction was not expected.

Calla brought it to him at noon. A communication intercepted through the residual channel Russ had used before it was closed, not a message going outbound but an incoming fragment, partial and partially corrupted, that the communication equipment had captured by proximity rather than by targeting.

The fragment contained two words that were unambiguous in context.

Beta compromised.

He looked at the fragment for a long time.

Then he went to Daren.

He found his Beta in the Beta’s office doing exactly what Daren always did when the operational situation was at its most complex sitting at his desk with every piece of information he had, building the map of it with the methodical precision that had made him invaluable for twelve years.

He put the fragment on the desk.

Daren looked at it. His expression did several things in controlled succession. He looked up.

”This isn’t about me,” he said. Flat. Immediate.

”I know.” Axel sat down. ”I need you to think about who else it could be.”

Daren looked at the fragment. He thought. He was quiet for two full minutes, which was a long time for Daren in an operational context. ”The message pattern,” he said finally. ”The channel fragment. The timing.” He looked up. ”This is Cael’s construction.”

”Explain.”

”The blood oath broke forty-eight hours ago. The oath break is a signal to Cael that something is compromised, he doesn’t know what or who, but he knows the shape of a defection and how to respond to it.” Daren leaned forward. ”If I wanted to destabilize a pack operation three days before execution, I wouldn’t send a provocation. I’d send a doubt. Something that puts the Alpha in the position of auditing his own command team while the clock runs.” He paused. ”The fragment is too partial to be useful intelligence. It’s exactly partial enough to create maximum internal pressure.”

Axel held his Beta’s eyes.

”The channel was officially closed,” Daren said. ”For a fragment to reach us through it, someone had to be monitoring a closed channel, which requires specific equipment and advance knowledge of the channel’s technical profile.” He paused. ”The Hollow has that knowledge because Russ used the channel to communicate with them. They know the technical profile. A partial transmission on a closed channel that reaches us by proximity is not a leak. It’s a broadcast.”

Axel sat with this. He turned it over. He tested the logic from several angles.

”You’re certain,” he said.

”I’m certain it’s plausible,” Daren said. ”I’m certain enough to tell you that acting on the fragment as intelligence would be more damaging than ignoring it.” He held Axel’s gaze. ”The operation is three days out. The team is the team. We don’t have time to rebuild trust architecture in seventy-two hours, and attempting it creates exactly the internal fractures that a Beta compromised message is designed to create.”

Axel looked at his Beta for a long moment.

”If you’re wrong,” he said.

”If I’m wrong, we run the operation with a compromised position that we couldn’t have identified in seventy-two hours anyway,” Daren said. ”The risk is the same whether we act on the fragment or not. What changes is the internal cohesion of the team.” A pause. ”I’ve served this pack for twelve years. I’ve served you specifically for twelve years. I need you to make this call on that basis.”

He held Daren’s eyes.

Twelve years. Every decision. Every crisis. Every midnight briefing and every border confrontation and every moment when the Beta’s office had been the place where he could say the true and complete version instead of the managed one.

”I’m not auditing the team,” he said.

Daren exhaled one small, controlled breath. ”Good.”

”I’m putting a monitoring layer on the eastern communication equipment for the next seventy-two hours.” He stood. ”If the Hollow is broadcasting on the closed channel, I want to know what else comes through.” He moved to the door. ”And Daren.”

”Yes.”

”Thank you for telling me it wasn’t you before I asked.”

Daren looked at him. ”You wouldn’t have asked.”

He said nothing, because that was true and they both knew it and leaving it as a fact was better than decorating it.

He went back to the map.

The operation was three days out and the enemies were close and the team was the team and the clock was running the way it always ran, without mercy and without pause, toward the thing that was going to happen regardless.

He held his line.
