The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The jealousy arrived in the form of a woman named Sable Venn.

Axel had known Sable for eleven years. She was thirty-two, unmated, a senior warrior of genuine capability who had been part of the packhouse’s inner circle long enough to have earned a specific kind of standing that proximity to the Alpha’s seat produced in close-knit communities. She was not a romantic interest had never been, not in any way that had been acted on or explicitly named. But there was a history of particular attention, a specific awareness between them that the pack had noted and quietly filed under the category of eventually, which was the category that held several things in a pack where the Alpha was unmated and the eligible members of appropriate standing were not numerous

She had been managing Reyna’s presence with more visible difficulty than most, which Axel had noted and monitored without addressing directly, because some adjustments required time rather than intervention.

He identified that the time had run out on the morning of the thirty-first day. He was in the corridor between the training yard and the main hall when he heard it, not raised voices, nothing that announced itself as confrontation. Something subtler. The specific register of two women in a narrow space with a particular kind of tension between them, and the quality of Reyna’s silence, which he could read now with the accuracy of extended familiarity.

He came around the corner.

Sable was standing in the corridor with a water vessel and a towel from the training session, and she was positioned in the particular way that bodies positioned themselves when they were communicating something through physicality rather than words. Not blocking, nothing that obvious. Just present in the center of the space in a way that required acknowledgment to move past.

Reyna was three feet away with the composed neutrality she deployed when something was not worth her agitation but was worth her full attention.

He looked at Sable. ”Training yard needs the towels back,” he said. His voice was completely even.

Sable looked at him. The look had several things in it that he catalogued, the specific compound of a person who had been caught in something they couldn’t quite defend and the additional compound of someone registering that what they had thought was a private territorial communication had an audience.

She moved. Nodded once, without speaking, and continued down the corridor toward the yard.

He looked at Reyna.

She looked back at him with the expression she used when she was going to give him the accurate summary rather than the managed one. ”She wasn’t hostile,” she said. ”She was marking territory. There’s a distinction.”

”Yes,” he said. ”I know.”

”She cares about you.” It was delivered as pure observation. No jealousy in it, he checked for that with the accuracy the mark allowed and found nothing of the kind. What he found was something more like the steady, clear-eyed assessment of a person who had been watching human and wolf nature for four centuries and found it exactly as predictable as history suggested.

”Not in the way that’s been acted on,” he said.

”Doesn’t matter whether it’s been acted on.” She held his eyes. ”It exists. She sees what’s happening and she’s responding to it.” A pause. ”Which means what’s happening is visible to people who have reason to look.

He looked at her for a long moment. ”Are you telling me to be more careful?”

”I’m telling you that Sable Venn is not the only person in this pack who has noticed,” she said. ”I thought that was useful information.”

He thought about it. ”It is.”

”And Axel.” She held his gaze with the steadiness she brought to things she was committed to saying accurately. ”She’s not wrong to care about you. That kind of loyalty should be handled carefully.”

He looked at her. The specific quality of a woman who was telling him to be gentle with the feelings of someone who was, in whatever category, a competitor for his attention, with the same clear, undefensive precision she brought to intelligence assessments.

”Understood,” he said.

She nodded once and moved past him down the corridor.

He stood in the empty hallway and thought about the specific quality of that interaction and what it said about her, and then he went to find Sable.

He found her in the weapons storage, alone, restacking practice equipment with the controlled energy of someone using physical work for the purpose he used it himself.

He closed the door behind him.

She looked up. Her face had the specific set of someone who had prepared for this conversation and was finding the preparation somewhat inadequate now that it had arrived.

”You don’t need to say anything,” she said.

”I’d like to.” He sat down on the equipment bench, which put them at a roughly equal level, and looked at her with the direct, unperformed attention he brought to things that deserved honesty. ”Not as your Alpha. As Axel.”

She set down the equipment. She looked at him with the eyes of someone who had been carrying something for long enough that the carrying had become the primary experience.

”Eleven years,” she said. Not accusatory. Just the fact of it.

”Eleven years,” he agreed. ”You are one of the people in this pack I value most. Your ability, your loyalty, what you’ve given to this community.” He paused. ”I’ve never been fair to you about the rest of it.”

She looked at him. ”The rest of it.”

”The specific ambiguity that I allowed to exist because resolving it required a conversation I kept not having.” He held her gaze. ”That wasn’t fair. It was thoughtless in the specific way that busy people are thoughtless, not malicious, but not acceptable either.” A pause. ”I’m sorry for it.”

She was quiet for a long moment. ”And now there’s no ambiguity.”

”No,” he said. ”There isn’t.”

The room held the weight of that.

She looked at the floor for a moment, and then she looked up, and what was in her face was something he respected very much, the specific dignity of a person absorbing an unwanted truth and deciding to hold themselves well in the face of it.

”Is she good to you?” Sable asked. Quietly.

He thought about the midnight corridor and the training yard and the hand beside hers on the intelligence report and the dark at the east wing window and ask me again when it’s done.

”I’ll let you know,” he said honestly. ”When I know.”

She held his eyes for a moment. Then she picked up the equipment she had set down and went back to work.

He left her to it.

The thirty-first day ended with a war room session that ran until eleven, mapping the final approach vectors for the convergence operation against Lev’s latest patrol data. Reyna was precise and focused and gave no indication that the morning corridor had left any residue in her operational concentration, which was exactly what he expected from her.

He walked the packhouse perimeter before bed, as he sometimes did when the building felt too enclosed to contain everything that was in it.

The night was cold and clear, stars visible in the gaps between cloud cover, the forest at the perimeter standing in its dark, patient way.

He thought about Sable’s question. Is she good to you?

He thought about the truth of it, not the complicated truth, the simple one. The specific, unadorned fact of what the last thirty-one days had been.

She had walked into his territory alone and told him the truth. She had been in the corridor the night the compound entered his blood and she had put herself between him and the two Hollow operatives without a second’s hesitation. She had given him everything she knew about the threat his pack faced, verified it at personal risk, managed the adjustment his pack required of her without complaint. She had sat across his war room table for thirty-one days and brought the best thinking she had to everything he brought to her.

She had said ask me again when it’s done and she had meant it.

He looked at the stars in the gaps between the clouds.

Yes, he concluded. In all the ways that could be assessed before the asking, yes.

He went back inside.

Thirteen days.
