The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Dawn came steel-grey and cold.

Axel was at the eastern tree line at first light, already in motion not the packhouse’s managed grounds but the real forest, the ungroomed tangle of old growth that ran along the boundary corridor. Four warriors behind him at spacing. Reyna beside him.

She moved differently outside.

He had seen her in rooms, in corridors, in the controlled geometry of interior spaces, and she moved well in all of those with the particular fluid economy of something that had never needed to perform its ease. But outside, in the forest, with the cold morning air and the forest floor and no walls, she moved like what she actually was. Something very old and very capable that had been exercising restraint indoors.

She didn’t run ahead of him. She matched his pace with the precision of someone calibrating to a partner rather than competing with one, which he noted.

”They’ll come from the north-northeast,” she said quietly, not breaking stride. ”Not through the corridor directly they’ll use the old logging road that cuts through the human forest boundary and enter from above. The corridor is monitored and they know it.” She glanced at him. ”They’ve been watching your patrol patterns. Before Daren gave them the schedule, they were already mapping the gaps.”

”How many?”

”For a retrieval six, maybe eight. Enough to move fast and handle resistance, not enough to constitute a declaration.” She paused. ”They’ll want to take me without triggering a full confrontation. They need the situation to look contained.”

”Because a full confrontation brings the clan’s leadership in,” Axel said.

”And the clan’s leadership would shut them down.” She held his gaze briefly. ”The Hollow is not the whole clan. That still matters.”

They pushed further east, the warriors spreading naturally into a loose formation that covered the approaches without being told. Axel watched them move and felt the particular satisfaction of a pack that knew its business, even now, even divided.

He watched Reyna too. He didn’t make it obvious, but he watched her the way she read the forest, the small adjustments she made to her movement when the terrain changed, the moments when she went very still and tilted her head in a way that meant she was processing something through senses that ran deeper than the ones he shared with her.

”There,” she said.

He stopped. The warriors stopped.

She was looking north northeast. Forty meters into the tree line, nothing visible, nothing audible. He breathed in and caught it faint, almost buried under pine and cold soil. The clean cold scent. Familiar now. No longer abstract.

”How many?” he asked quietly.

”Three. Advance scouts.” She didn’t look at him. ”The main group is further back. They’re not moving yet they’re watching to see what the scouts find.”

Axel turned his head a fraction toward Petra, who was eight meters to his right. He gave her the hand signal for contain and redirect not engage, not yet. She passed it down the line without sound.

”They’ll break when they know the scouts are compromised,” Reyna said.

”How long do we have?”

”Minutes.” She looked at him then, fully. ”What do you want to do?”

He thought about it for exactly as long as it required. ”I want them to know we saw them coming. I want them to go back to whoever sent them and report that this pack is not a soft target and the person they came for is not retrievable without a cost they’re not prepared to pay today.” He met her eyes. ”Can you help me send that message without starting a war?”

Something shifted in her expression. Not softness, something more precise than softness. Recognition, maybe. Of a kind of thinking she respected.

”Yes,” she said.

What happened next took eleven minutes.

Petra’s team moved on the scouts not with lethal force, but with the contained, professional efficiency of wolves who had been trained for exactly this kind of controlled engagement. Two of the three scouts were on the ground before they fully registered the approach. The third ran.

Axel let him run.

He and Reyna moved together toward the point where the logging road met the tree line, where the main group was positioned. He could feel them before he saw them eight figures in the dark of the tree line, watching the scout’s retreat with the particular stillness of people recalibrating.

He stopped at the boundary. He stood in full view, which was deliberate Alpha posture, unhurried, communicating through his body what he intended to communicate.

Reyna stood beside him.

That was the message. Not the warriors behind him, not the contained scouts somewhere back in the trees. The message was the two of them standing at the boundary together, visible, unafraid, looking into the dark at the people who had come for her.

He felt the moment when the calculation shifted on the other side. When whoever was making decisions in those trees ran the numbers and reached the conclusion he had intended them to reach.

They withdrew.

Not fast. Not panicked. The controlled withdrawal of people who had decided this particular morning was not the right geometry. But they withdrew.

Axel stood at the tree line until he was certain they were gone. Beside him, Reyna was still the held, absolute stillness she used when she was processing something internally.

When the forest had been quiet long enough, she said, ”That was well done.”

”We made the point without the cost.”

”Most people in your position would have taken the engagement.”

”Most people in my position would have been giving them what they wanted.” He glanced at her. ”They want a war, Reyna. Every time I hit them, I’m building their justification. What I just did gives them nothing to build with.”

She looked at him with the particular expression he had started to recognize the one she got when something landed that she hadn’t fully expected from him. Assessment reconsidering itself. It was one of the more honest expressions she had, because it was involuntary.

They walked back through the forest together.

The warriors fell into formation around them, quieter now, the post-action quiet that settled over people after controlled intensity. The forest moved around them birds returning to branches, the small sounds of ordinary life reasserting themselves in the wake of something that had been, briefly, very focused.

Halfway back to the packhouse, walking close enough that their arms were nearly touching in the narrow trail, Reyna said quietly, ”You’re going to have to fight them eventually.”

”I know.”

”But not today.”

”Not today,” he agreed.

The packhouse came into view through the trees. Smoke from the kitchen chimney. The distant sound of the training yard. His pack, divided and complicated and entirely his.

Beside him, Reyna walked out of the forest and into the light of the grounds, and several wolves who were crossing the yard stopped to watch, and the watching was different than it had been eleven days ago.

Not acceptance. Not yet.

But something adjacent to it.

Something that had been built, quietly, by two people moving through the same forest in the same direction, watching each other’s backs without being asked.

Axel noticed.

He didn’t say anything about it.

He walked through his gates and went to work.
