The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Three weeks before the convergence, the packhouse power went out.

Not the whole system the eastern generator stayed up, keeping the perimeter lights and the radio system running. But the main building went dark at nine in the evening, which was not quite enough darkness to prevent movement but was enough to strip the familiar packhouse of its ordinary visual structure and replace it with something closer to the forest shapes without detail, directions without landmarks, the ambient darkness of a building that had been emptied of its artificial certainty.

The cause was mundane. A circuit failure in the main junction, exacerbated by the draw of the additional communication equipment they had been running for the convergence planning. Phin diagnosed it within twenty minutes and confirmed a repair timeline of two hours.

Two hours of darkness in a packhouse full of wolves who were already managing a degree of tension that the dark did not improve.

Axel walked the building with a flashlight and his own senses, checking spaces and settling people with the physical presence that was sometimes more useful than light. Pack members who had been edgy found their Alpha moving through the dark with complete composure and the edginess reduced. This was the function, impractical and essential in equal measure.

He came to the east wing on his third circuit.

She was at the window. Of course she was she had no difficulty with darkness, which was one of the things the dark had to recommend it from her perspective. She was standing at the wing’s end window with her back to him, looking out at the perimeter lights that were the building’s only illumination.

He had his flashlight but he switched it off.

”All settled?” she asked without turning.

”The west wing had some anxiety among the younger group. It’s managed.” He came to stand beside her. ”You’re comfortable.”

”More comfortable than the wolves, yes.” She glanced at him. In the near-dark her features were the shapes and suggestions that his wolf-vision parsed better than ordinary sight would have. ”Though the perimeter lighting is less interesting to look at than a full moon. Aesthetically.”

”We could arrange a full moon,” he said. ”It’s three weeks out.”

”The convergence moon.” Her voice was even. ”Not the most appropriate aesthetic choice.”

He looked out at the perimeter lights. ”Lev’s report changes the east approach angle,” he said. ”The inner patrol rotation shifted again. I’ve been running the new geometry and it puts your disruption point sixty meters further from the extraction corridor.”

”I saw it.” She turned slightly toward him, which at the current proximity brought the conversation into a closer register. ”It’s manageable. The disruption mechanism doesn’t require the proximity I originally mapped. I can work with sixty additional meters.”

”You’re sure.”

”Yes.” She held his eyes in the near-dark. ”I know what I can do.”

He looked at her. The flashlight was off, the perimeter lights were outside the window, and the east wing held the specific dark of a room that was not quite black — the texture of darkness that contained shapes rather than erasing them. She was one of the shapes. Close enough that the cold that was specific to her was present against the ambient air.

”The mark,” he said. ”Right now.”

She knew what he was asking whether the proximity was activating it. ”Low register. Consistent.” A pause. ”You?”

”The same.” He held her eyes. ”The tolerance work is holding.”

”Yes.” Something moved in her expression. ”It’s holding very well.”

He was aware of the specific quality of the silence between them in the dark, which was different from the silences in the war room or the training yard less structured, less occupied by the professional framing that those spaces provided. The dark had stripped some of the professional architecture and left the room slightly more honest than it usually was.

”Reyna,” he said.

”Don’t,” she said. Quietly. Without hardness.

He was quiet.

”Not tonight,” she said. ”Not with three weeks on the clock and the operation at this stage.” She looked at him steadily in the dark. ”Ask me again when it’s done.”

He held her gaze. He thought about what he had been going to say, which he had not fully decided, and about the specific accuracy of what she had just said, which was entirely correct and which he could not argue with without arguing against his own judgment.

”Alright,” he said.

She turned back to the window.

He stood beside her in the dark, and the mark burned its low consistent warmth, and the perimeter lights held their cold circle around the packhouse, and three weeks felt like both a very short and a very long time.

When the power came back on forty minutes later, they were still at the window.

They moved apart without discussing it and the professional architecture reassembled around them and they went back to the work, because the work was real and urgent and required everything.

But the dark had been honest, and honesty, once it existed, didn’t stop existing because the lights came back on.
