The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

By morning the burning had mostly resolved.

Mostly.

There was a residual sensation not pain exactly, more like a persistent awareness of the site, the way a healed injury sometimes continued to announce itself in cold weather. Axel woke at five, tested his range of motion carefully, ran an internal inventory of his systems with the practiced attention of someone who had been injured before and knew the difference between healing and masking.

The compound was clearing. Sera came at six and confirmed it, the marks themselves had changed from the reactive redness of active intrusion to the duller coloration of resolution. She looked at them with professional satisfaction and told him to rest.

He told her he would and then went directly to the training yard.

He managed forty-five minutes before Petra found him and looked at him with the particular expression she reserved for things she found simultaneously unsurprising and inadvisable. She didn’t tell him to stop. She had been working with him long enough to know the economics of that conversation. She simply joined the workout and matched his pace, which was her version of keeping watch.

He was slower than normal. He noticed it immediately and catalogued it without sentiment. The compound might have been clearing but the night had cost him something not dramatically, not catastrophically, but measurably. His reaction time was two beats off where it typically sat. His left shoulder, which had borne the secondary spread of the burning, felt imprecise in a way that left shoulders should not feel.

He ran harder anyway.

It was not his most intelligent decision of the morning.

Daren found him at eight with the look of a man who had spent the night compiling a list of concerns and was now prepared to deliver them with structure.

”Sit down,” Daren said, which was not how Beta wolves typically opened conversations with their Alpha.

Axel sat down, which was not how Alpha wolves typically responded to that tone. He sat because the training yard bench was there and because something in his body was making a reasonable argument for it.

Daren sat across from him and laid out the situation with the methodical thoroughness that Axel had always valued in him and was finding somewhat taxing this particular morning. The pack had felt the previous night. Not the specific details most of the pack didn’t know about the corridor incident yet but the emotional residue of it, the disruption to the Alpha’s state that filtered through pack bonds in ways that couldn’t be fully controlled. Three senior warriors had reported difficulty sleeping. The packhouse dogs had been agitated before dawn. Elder Sorn had sent a message requesting an urgent meeting.

”What did you tell Sorn?” Axel asked.

”That you’d meet him this afternoon.” Daren paused. ”I also told him you were well and that last night’s situation was contained. Which is what I assumed you’d want communicated.”

”That’s accurate.”

”Is it?” Daren looked at him directly. ”Because from where I’m sitting, you are slower than you were yesterday and you just worked the training yard for forty-five minutes when you should be lying down, and you have a vampire’s blood in your system creating a twelve to sixteen hour connection that I don’t fully understand the implications of, and the Hollow knows that we know, which means...”

”Daren.”

”.....which means the timeline has compressed and we’re managing two border threats simultaneously with an Alpha who is currently operating below full capacity and...”

”Daren.” Axel’s voice was even and quiet. The quality of it stopped his Beta mid-sentence. ”I hear you.”

A beat.

”Good,” Daren said. ”Because someone needs to say it.”

”You’re right.” Axel looked out across the training yard, where the morning’s routine work was beginning, warriors moving through drills, the younger pack members running the perimeter in groups. The ordinary machinery of a pack functioning. ”I’m slower this morning. Not compromised in ways that affect command decisions, but physically slower. That resolves fully by tomorrow at the latest.”

”And the connection?”

Axel thought about the open window. Since waking, it had been present in exactly the way Reyna had described, not intrusive, not readable in detail, but there. A faint awareness at the edge of his consciousness, like a light in an adjacent room visible under a closed door. He could tell, in a general way, that she was awake. That she was not distressed. That she was in motion somewhere.

He didn’t volunteer this to Daren, because Daren was already managing a significant amount and the specific texture of the connection was not operationally critical.

”It resolves by this evening,” he said instead. ”Twelve to sixteen hours from last night.”

Daren nodded once. He looked like he wanted to say more. He chose the more essential thing. ”The pack needs to see you today. Whatever happened last night, they felt it. They need to see their Alpha moving normally and making decisions.”

”I know.” Axel stood. The movement was smooth, he had excellent control of how he presented physically, always had. ”Arrange the elder meeting for two. Get Petra and Soren in the war room at noon. Standard morning assembly at nine.”

”You’ll attend the assembly?”

”I’ll lead it.”

Daren nodded again. The relief in it was not quite visible but it was present. Axel read it in the slight drop of his Beta’s shoulders, the fractional reduction in the controlled tension that Daren had been holding since the previous night.

”And her?” Daren asked.

”She’s still in the packhouse?”

”East wing. She stayed.” A pause. ”I didn’t tell her to leave. I didn’t think I should make that call without you.”

Axel considered that. ”Leave her where she is for now.”

The morning assembly was a daily ritual, the full pack gathering in the main hall for a brief communication session that kept the community informed and connected. Axel had missed four hundred and twenty-two of them during his absence, which was a number he knew because Daren had told him and which sat in his mind with the specific weight of time that couldn’t be recovered.

He stood at the front of the hall and looked at his pack.

Three hundred wolves, approximately ranging from the elders in their customary front positions to the youngest pack members in the back rows, the children who watched him with the wide, calibrating attention of young things assessing a dominant presence. He knew most of them by name. He knew all of them by scent. He knew their histories, their family structures, their roles in the pack’s function.

They were looking at him the same way they always did with the specific quality of attention that a pack brought to its Alpha. Not blind deference. Something more complex than that. A constant assessment of whether the person at the center was holding, whether the gravity was reliable, whether the thing they had organized their community around was still solid.

He stood straight and spoke clearly and gave them what they needed a brief account of the southern border confrontation that was accurate without being inflammatory, a statement of the pack’s current security posture that was honest about the elevated threat level without triggering panic, and a personal communication of his presence and commitment that required no words because it was entirely physical.

He was here. He was holding. The center was solid.

He watched the assembly respond to it in real time the subtle shifts in posture, the slight relaxation in the older faces, the children in the back settling into less vigilant stances. Three hundred wolves reading their Alpha and finding the reading reassuring.

What they didn’t read what he spent the entire assembly carefully not broadcasting through the pack bond was the persistent pull of fatigue that sat beneath his composure like an undertow. The compound was clearing but the night had cost him, and standing in front of his pack while managing that cost was the most demanding thing he had done since returning.

He held it for the full twenty minutes and then stepped back and let Daren take the administrative communications.

He stood at the edge of the hall and breathed.

She found him there.

He didn’t hear her coming, which was itself information, because Axel could hear most things. She simply appeared at his shoulder in the way that she did things, between one moment and the next, and stood beside him at the edge of the hall while the assembly concluded.

”You shouldn’t be standing for that long,” she said quietly. Observation, not criticism.

”I’m aware.”

”The compound’s residual effect peaks between eight and sixteen hours and then drops sharply. You’re in the peak window.” She paused. ”The physical fatigue is expected. It’s not a sign of deeper damage.”

He looked sideways at her. ”Are you telling me that because the connection is giving you my physical state?”

A fractional pause. ”Yes.”

He looked back at the hall. ”What does it feel like? My side.”

She was quiet for a moment that felt considered rather than evasive. ”Like something that has been carrying weight for a long time,” she said. ”And hasn’t decided yet whether putting it down would make things better or worse.”

He had no response to that.

Around them the assembly was dispersing wolves moving in the organized flow of a community with purposes and schedules, the hum of three hundred lives going about their ordinary business. None of them looked at Reyna beside him, because none of them could see her positioned at the edge of the space the way he was.

He would deal with that later.

For now he stood at the edge of his hall, in the peak window of a compound’s residual effect, with a vampire standing close enough that her cold was the thing keeping him most precisely aware of the temperature of the room.

And he let himself, just briefly, feel the full weight of what fourteen months away had cost, and what the next phase of this was going to demand, and what it meant that the most honest assessment of his condition this morning had come not from his Beta or his medics but from the vampire whose blood was currently, temporarily, irrevocably in his veins.

Tomorrow he would be at full strength.

Today he simply had to hold.

He held.
