The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The meeting had been called for noon.

Axel hadn’t called it. That was the first thing, the detail that told him everything he needed to know about how far the fracture had already spread. Daren had called it, using his Beta authority in the particular way that Betas used it when they had decided that the Alpha needed to be brought back into alignment with the pack rather than the other way around. It was within his rights. It was also the clearest signal Daren had sent yet that this had stopped being a private disagreement between two men who trusted each other and had become something institutional.

The common room held forty people when Axel walked in. Senior warriors, patrol leaders, three of the five elders. Faces he had known his whole life, arranged in the particular configuration of people who had been waiting and had used the waiting time to harden their positions.

Daren stood at the front of the room. He looked at Axel when he came in with an expression that had stopped being apologetic somewhere in the last twelve hours and become something steadier and more difficult.

”Alpha,” he said. The formality of it landed like a stone.

”Beta.” Axel came to the center of the room and stopped. He didn’t take the chair at the head of the table. He stood, which was its own kind of statement. ”Tell me what this is.”

”You know what this is.”

”I want to hear it said clearly.”

Daren held his gaze for a moment. Then he said it clearly. ”Reyna Voss has been inside this territory for eleven days. She moves through the packhouse. She attends briefings. She has access to our patrol schedules, our border assessments, our operational intelligence.” A pause. ”She is a vampire, Axel. She is Voss Clan. And the pack is asking me has been asking me for four days what their Alpha is thinking.”

The room was very quiet.

Axel looked at the faces around him. He read them the way he always read rooms not for what people were showing him but for what was underneath the showing. What he found was not simple. There was fear, yes, and the particular anxiety that wolves developed when their territory felt compromised. But there was also something else. Confusion, mostly. These were people who trusted him had trusted him, had rebuilt that trust over the six weeks since his return and they couldn’t reconcile the Alpha they knew with the decision they were watching him make.

He understood that. He even respected it.

He didn’t change his answer.

”Reyna Voss came to us with intelligence that has proven accurate on every verifiable point,” he said. He didn’t raise his voice. He spoke the way he always spoke in rooms like this, with the even, carrying authority of someone who was not performing confidence because they actually had it. ”The Hollow’s movements have tracked exactly against what she told us. The artifact transport we intercepted last week she gave us the route. The secondary faction cell operating near the southern corridor junction, she identified them before our own scouts found the evidence.” He looked around the room. ”We have stopped two incidents in eleven days because of information she provided. Information we would not have had through our own resources in time to act on it.”

”And when she stops being useful?” Petra asked. Her voice was not hostile. It was the voice of someone asking a question they genuinely needed answered. ”When everything she knows has been extracted and she’s still here, still sleeping three doors down from the Alpha’s quarters, still eating at our table what is the operational justification then?”

The room waited.

Axel was quiet for exactly long enough to communicate that he had heard the question and was not going to pretend it was simpler than it was.

”She stays,” he said, ”because I trust her.”

The silence that followed was a different quality than the silence before it.

Soren old, grey bearded, fifty years of Ashveil service in his bones, leaned back in his chair with an expression that was not angry but was deeply tired. Calla looked at the table. Two of the younger patrol leaders exchanged a glance that Axel caught and filed.

Daren stepped forward. ”Axel.” The formality was gone from his voice now, replaced by something older and more painful. ”I have followed you since we were seventeen years old. I have backed every decision you have made, including the ones I disagreed with, because I believed your judgment was sound and your priorities were right.” He stopped. The effort of what he was saying was visible in his jaw, in the set of his shoulders. ”I am telling you now, as your Beta and as the person in this pack who knows you best this is not sound. Whatever is happening with her, it is affecting how you see this situation. And the pack knows it.”

The words landed with the specific weight that true things landed with when they were delivered by people who had earned the right to deliver them.

Axel looked at his Beta. He looked at him for a long moment with the full, clear eyed attention of a man who was not going to look away from something difficult just because it was difficult.

”You’re not wrong,” he said.

Daren blinked. He hadn’t expected that.

”You’re not wrong that something has changed in how I see this. I won’t pretend otherwise not to you, not to this room.” Axel turned slightly, addressing the full space. ”But I need you to hear the distinction I’m making, because it matters. The intelligence she has provided is sound regardless of what I feel about the person providing it. Those are separate questions. I have kept them separate in every operational decision I have made in the last eleven days, and I will continue to keep them separate.” His voice didn’t waver. ”She stays. That is my decision as Alpha of this pack, and it is not subject to consensus.”

”You can’t order us to trust her,” Petra said.

”I’m not.” He met her eyes. ”I’m asking you to trust me. Those are different things.”

The room absorbed that.

It didn’t resolve cleanly rooms like this never did. People didn’t change their minds in the moment; they took what had been said away with them and turned it over in private, and sometimes it shifted and sometimes it calcified. Axel knew this. He had known it when he walked in.

What he needed from this meeting was not agreement. What he needed was for his position to be stated clearly enough that no one could mistake it for uncertainty or drift.

He had stated it.

He looked at Daren as people began to move, conversations breaking out in low urgent voices at the room’s edges. Daren looked back at him with an expression that had layers in it loyalty and frustration and something that was close to grief, the kind that came from watching someone you cared about walk toward something you couldn’t protect them from.

”I hear you,” Axel said quietly. Just for Daren. ”I hear everything you said.”

”But.”

”But she stays.”

Daren nodded once. A small, tight motion. And then he turned and walked out of the room, and Axel stood in the center of the space and watched him go and felt the specific cold weight of a decision that was right and costly at the same time.

He found Reyna in the east wing an hour later. She was standing at the window she was always standing at the window, he had noticed, as if she found something in the view of the forest that was easier than the interior of the room. She turned when he came in.

She had heard enough of the packhouse that morning to understand what had happened. He could see it in her face the particular still composure of someone who had already processed a thing and was waiting to see what it meant.

”You should have let them move me out,” she said.

”No.”

”Axel....”

”No.” He said it the second time with the same flatness as the first, which was its own kind of emphasis. He came further into the room and stopped a few feet from her, close enough that the conversation didn’t require raised voices. ”The meeting is done. My position is stated. We move forward.”

She looked at him for a long moment. The winter light from the window was behind her, which put her face in slight shadow and made her expression harder to read than usual, though he was getting better at reading her. He had noticed that. The way her tells were smaller than most people’s but not absent the fractional change in her eyes, the almost imperceptible shift in her breathing when something landed that she hadn’t expected.

Something had landed that she hadn’t expected. The fact that he hadn’t moved her.

”It’s going to cost you,” she said. Not as a warning. As a statement of observed fact.

”Most things worth keeping cost something.”

She went very still.

He held her gaze without elaboration, because the elaboration was in the words themselves and adding to them would have diminished them. He had said what he meant. He was leaving it in the room.

After a moment, she turned back to the window.

”The Hollow is moving faster,” she said. Her voice was even, professional, pulling them back to ground. ”What I told you about the timeline. I think I was off. I think we have less time than I said.”

He moved to stand beside her at the window and looked out at the forest and said, ”Tell me.”

And she told him. And he listened. And outside the window, the pack moved through the grounds below them, unsettled and divided, carrying the weight of a choice their Alpha had made without asking for their approval.

The forest held its silence around all of them.
