The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Elder Malka came to him the next morning without announcement.

This was unusual. Malka operated through channels, formal requests, scheduled meetings, the deliberate structural approach of someone who understood that how you arrived at a conversation shaped the conversation itself. The fact that she appeared at the Alpha’s quarters door at seven in the morning with no prior communication was itself a communication, and Axel received it as such.

He let her in.

She sat in the chair across from his desk without being invited to, which was her prerogative, and she looked at him with the eyes of a woman who had been awake and thinking for several hours.

”You didn’t sleep,” she said.

”I slept.” He had managed two hours before dawn. ”What do you know, Malka?”

She folded her hands on her knee. ”Last night, one of the overnight sentries came to me rather than to Daren. He was uncertain who the appropriate channel was, given what he’d seen.” She paused. ”He saw Russ Yodin leave the packhouse at three in the morning. Eastern direction. He was gone for forty minutes.”

The cold that lived at the bottom of Axel’s processing deepened.

”Did the sentry document it?” he asked.

”No. He came to me because he knew it should be documented and he didn’t know how to document something that might mean nothing without starting something he didn’t intend.” Malka’s voice was even. ”I told him he’d done the right thing.”

”He did.” Axel sat back. ”I need you to keep this inside this conversation for the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours.”

Malka looked at him. ”You already knew.”

”I had indicators. Not proof.” He met her eyes. ”I’m building proof.”

She was quiet for a moment. ”Through her.”

”Through a contact she has inside the clan.” He held the elder’s gaze. ”I know what you’re going to say.”

”Do you.”

”That using a vampire’s intelligence network to investigate pack betrayal creates a dependency that complicates the pack’s autonomy. That even if the intelligence is accurate, the manner of its acquisition will affect how it can be used and how the pack will receive it. That there are better....”

”That’s not what I was going to say,” Malka said.

He stopped.

She looked at him for a long moment. ”I was going to say that if Russ Yodin has sold information to the Hollow, the thing most likely to have motivated him is fear.” She paused. ”Not greed. Not ideology. Russ is sixty-one years old and has given forty years to this pack and has a daughter in the junior ranks. Fear for her, or for himself, or for what happens to this pack if a war starts, can make a man do things that would otherwise be unthinkable.” She held his eyes. ”When you have the proof, remember that.”

He looked at her. ”You’re not arguing for leniency.”

”I’m arguing for accuracy.” She stood with the deliberate ease of someone who had maintained physical capability well into old age through specific choices. ”Leniency or justice or whatever word fits, that’s your call. That’s what the Alpha’s seat means. I’m telling you to understand what you’re dealing with before you decide what to do with it.” She moved toward the door. ”And Axel.”

He waited.

”The girl is not your enemy.” She said it without drama, without the weight of announcement. As a statement of current fact. ”I spent forty years believing that every Voss was a category rather than a person. I’m revising that.” A pause. ”It doesn’t mean trust her completely. It means she’s not your enemy.”

She left.

Axel sat in his quarters and thought about fear and betrayal and the specific mercy required to hold both concepts in mind simultaneously without letting either one distort the other.

The forty-eight hours resolved in thirty-six.

Reyna’s contact, a former advisor to her father named Lev, operating at significant personal risk within the clan, sent information through the channel they used that was specific and detailed and answered the question Axel had asked more completely than he’d hoped.

The Hollow had approached Russ Yodin twenty-two days ago. Not through a direct contact, through an intermediary, a wolf from a neutral pack who carried a message that Cael had crafted with the specific intelligence of someone who had been studying Ashveil Pack for a long time. The message had not been a threat. It had been a demonstration.

Proof that the Hollow could reach Russ’s daughter. Proof that they knew where she trained, where she slept, what her routine was, who she cared about. Not a threat, a demonstration. A display of capability delivered with the implicit message that capability and action were two different things, and the distance between them was entirely Russ Yodin’s to control.

Axel read the information twice. Then he sat with it for a long time.

When he came back to the war room that evening, Reyna was already there.

”You have it,” she said.

”Yes.” He sat down. He told her what Lev had provided. He watched her receive it with the specific expression she wore for information that confirmed something she had already suspected.

”Cael uses this approach systematically,” she said. ”He identifies vulnerability and demonstrates proximity to it rather than making direct threats. It’s more effective and harder to prosecute.” She paused. ”Russ Yodin is not a traitor by nature. He’s a father who was shown his child in a photograph and told nothing else needed to be said.”

”I know.” Axel was quiet for a moment. ”His daughter needs to be moved. Immediately, tonight, to a position in the packhouse that’s not on the standard roster, somewhere that a compromised patrol pattern couldn’t deliver her to the Hollow if they decided to stop demonstrating.”

”And Russ?”

He looked at the table. ”I’m going to give him the chance to tell me himself.”

Reyna looked at him. ”That’s a significant risk.”

”It’s a necessary one.” He met her eyes. ”If I confront him with what I have, he’ll know the source eventually. A man who’s been communicating with the Hollow under duress is a man who could communicate that our intelligence runs through your network.” He paused. ”But if I give him the space to come to me voluntarily, if he comes, then I have a different kind of information. And he has something he can live with.”

She was quiet for a long moment. ”You’re protecting him.”

”I’m giving him the opportunity to protect himself.” He held her gaze. ”There’s a difference.”

She looked at him with the expression she wore when something was going through the same processing as everything else and coming out the other side changed.

”Yes,” she said quietly. ”There is.”

He moved the daughter that night. He gave Russ Yodin twenty-four hours.

Russ came to him in eighteen.

He stood in the Alpha’s quarters with the specific posture of a man who had put down a weight that had been destroying him and wasn’t sure the putting-down had left him intact.

He told Axel everything.

Axel listened to all of it without interruption, and when it was finished he sat with it, and then he said what he said, and what he said was not what Russ Yodin had expected.

It was not forgiveness. It was not punishment.

It was a plan. A specific, operational plan for how Russ Yodin was going to help them use the Hollow’s confidence in their compromised asset to deliver the wrong information at the right moment.

Russ looked at him.

”You’re giving me a way back,” he said.

”I’m giving us a tool,” Axel said. ”Whether it becomes a way back depends on what you do with it.

Russ nodded. His jaw was set with the specific resolution of a man who had decided to pay the debt however it needed to be paid.

Axel sent him out.

He sat alone for a moment, and thought about fear, and about what his pack was worth, and about the eighty-one-year-old elder who had revised forty years of certainty in the interest of accuracy.

He thought about the patient, cold intelligence in the east wing that had helped him find this before it became a catastrophe.

He went to tell her.
