The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The full moon came on a Friday.

Ashveil Pack ran on full moon nights. Not because they had to the shift wasn’t involuntary, hadn’t been for generations, the bloodline having refined itself past the old compulsions that made wolves in stories slaves to the lunar cycle. They ran because the moon pulled something loose in them that ordinary nights kept wound tight, and because three hundred wolves needed that release the way a pressurized system needed a valve.

Axel had not run with his pack on a full moon since his return. Six weeks back and he had missed two, the first because the situation was too unsettled for him to leave the packhouse unattended for three hours, the second because Reyna had arrived and the eastern threat had sharpened into something that didn’t allow for the particular vulnerability of a full shift.

Tonight he ran.

He made the decision at dusk, standing at the northern window watching the sky go amber and then deep blue and then the particular blue black that preceded moonrise. He made it partly because his wolf had been too long without the release and the contained energy was beginning to affect his thinking in ways he couldn’t afford. He made it partly because the pack needed to see their Alpha run with them.

And he made it partly because Reyna had been watching the forest from her window all evening with an expression he had come to recognize as something she didn’t have a clean name for.

He knocked on her door at eight.

She opened it and looked at him. She was wearing dark clothes as she always did, her hair loose in a way it usually wasn’t, and the moonlight that came through the window behind her made the pale of her skin into something luminous and strange.

”Come out tonight,” he said.

She went still. ”To the run.”

”Not to the run. To the northern ridge. There’s a point above the tree line where you can see the whole territory from above.” He held her gaze. ”You’ve been in that room long enough.”

She looked at him for a moment with the careful assessment she brought to things she hadn’t expected. Then she said, ”The pack....”

”The pack runs north. We go west, then up. We won’t cross their path.”

Another moment. Then she stepped out of the room.

They moved through the packhouse while the pack was assembling in the yard the particular organized noise of three hundred wolves preparing for something their blood had been anticipating all week. Nobody stopped them. A few people saw them and tracked their movement with their eyes, but the moon night energy was already running high and the attention was diffuse, pulled outward toward the forest rather than inward toward the east wing corridor.

Outside, the air hit them both differently. Axel felt it in his chest the moon not yet over the ridge but close, its pressure building in his blood like a tide coming in. He breathed it and let it move through him without acting on it, which took effort but was manageable.

Beside him, Reyna tilted her face up toward the sky. Something in her expression opened, briefly, in a way he had not seen before. The controlled composure she maintained as a constant, practiced thing it didn’t disappear, but it loosened. Just slightly. Just enough.

He didn’t comment on it. He led them west along the packhouse boundary and then up the ridge trail that climbed through old growth toward the exposed rock face at the top.

Behind them, the pack’s howls began as the moon broke the ridge line. Long, layered, the voices of three hundred wolves releasing something they’d been holding all month. The sound moved through the forest and up the mountain and into the cold clear sky, and Axel felt it in his sternum like a hand pressed flat against his chest.

He heard Reyna’s breathing change.

Not in fear. In something else. Something that was responding to the sound in a way she hadn’t anticipated and wasn’t sure what to do with.

They reached the top of the ridge twenty minutes later.

The view was what it always was total, clean, the whole of Ashveil’s territory spread below them in the moonlight like a map that had been drawn by something that loved the land it was recording. The packhouse lights were small and warm in the dark. The forest was silver and shadow, shifting as the wolves moved through it in their other forms. The eastern tree line was a black edge, and beyond it the corridor, and beyond that the Voss Clan’s distant holdings, invisible from here but present in the way that significant things were always present even when they couldn’t be seen.

Reyna stood at the edge of the rock face and looked at it.

He stood beside her and let the silence be what it was.

After a while she said, ”I forgot what it looked like. Territory.” Her voice was quiet. Not sad exactly, but carrying something. ”The clan’s estate has grounds, but it’s not the same. It’s managed. Owned.” She looked at the forest below them. ”This is different.”

”It’s alive,” he said. ”There’s a difference between land you occupy and land that knows you’re there.”

She turned to look at him. The moonlight was full on his face and he let her look, which was itself something. Axel Bessario did not generally allow sustained observation. But this was the ridge, and this was the moon, and the particular walls he maintained had loosened at their foundations in a way that three weeks ago he would not have permitted.

”Does it know I’m here?” she asked. Meaning the territory. Meaning the land.

”Something does,” he said. ”The forest registered your arrival before anyone in the packhouse did. I told you that.”

”You said the trees moved.”

”They did.”

She was quiet for a moment. Then, almost to herself: ”Vampires don’t have territory. Not the way you do. We have holdings. Properties. Influence.” A pause. ”But nothing that would move its branches for us.”

He thought about what to say to that and decided that nothing was correct.

Below them, the pack’s voices rose and fell in the dark, and the moon sat full and cold above the ridge, and Axel became aware incrementally of the distance between them narrowing not through deliberate movement but through the slow, gravitational pull of two people standing at the edge of something high together.

Then it happened.

He didn’t see what she caught it on. A branch from the climb, maybe, or the sharp edge of rock she’d rested her hand against. But she made a small sound not pain, she was too controlled for pain sounds and lifted her hand, and in the moonlight he saw the cut across her palm. Clean and thin, already welling.

The smell hit him.

He had been near her for three weeks. He had sat across tables from her, stood in forest clearings beside her, walked the eastern boundary in the pre dawn dark with her close enough to touch. He thought he had calibrated to her presence. He thought he understood what she was and had built sufficient walls around the understanding.

The smell of her blood dismantled the walls in approximately three seconds.

It wasn’t like wolf blood. Wolf blood smelled of iron and salt and the particular animal heat of a living body. Her blood smelled of something older and colder and more complex like the air inside the corridor, like winter water, like the specific dark of very old forest. And underneath those things, something else entirely. Something that had no reference in his experience but landed in his wolf like a key finding a lock it didn’t know it had.

He went very still.

She looked up at him and saw what was in his face and went still too.

The moment stretched between them the moonlight, the blood, the howling of the pack below them moving through the forest in their other forms, his wolf straining toward something it recognized in her at a level below conscious direction.

”Axel,” she said. His name in her voice was careful and low.

He breathed in again. He shouldn’t have, but he did.

”I’m fine,” he said. His voice was steady. The effort it took to make it steady was considerable.

She closed her hand around the cut. The smell reduced but didn’t disappear.

They stood on the ridge in the full moon and looked at each other with the particular clarity of two people who have just seen something they can’t unsee, and neither of them said what they were both thinking.

Below, the pack ran through the silver forest.

Above, the moon watched everything with its old, indifferent patience.
