The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Elder Malka arrived at the war room at two with four of the five inner council members and the particular expression of someone who had been preparing their argument since before sunrise. She sat down across from Axel with the composure of someone who held a different kind of authority than his and knew it, and she looked at him and then looked at the empty chair beside him and then looked back at him.

”You’re going to bring her in,” Malka said. It wasn’t a question.

”Yes.”

”Then we should say what we have to say before she arrives.”

He gestured for her to proceed.

What followed was fifteen minutes of the elders laying out their concerns with the thorough, unhurried precision of people who had been in enough crisis meetings to know which points needed to be made on record regardless of how the outcome went. The truce. The historical precedent. The specific dangers of closer entanglement with the Voss Clan in any configuration. The effect on the pack’s cohesion of having a vampire present in the packhouse for an extended period.

Axel listened to all of it. He did not interrupt. He did not dismiss. He had not brought these people into his confidence in order to override them but because their perspective was shaped by centuries of accumulated pack experience, and that experience had value even when it conflicted with present operational necessity.

When they finished he said, ”The Hollow’s compound was in my bloodstream last night. Without her intervention it would have broken down my healing capacity over a period of days, quietly, progressively, in ways that wouldn’t have been immediately diagnosable.” He looked around the table. ”I would have been managing a two-front threat situation with a deteriorating physical condition and no knowledge of why. At some point that deterioration would have become visible to the pack.” A beat. ”What do you think the south would have done with that information?”

The elders were quiet.

”The truce matters,” he said. ”I’m not dismissing it. I’m telling you that the threat to the truce is currently coming from inside the clan it was built with, and that the most useful asset I have in understanding that threat is sitting in the east wing waiting to be heard.” He looked at Malka. ”I’d like you to hear her.”

Malka looked at him for a long moment with the eyes of a woman who had watched him grow from an infant and was trying to determine whether what she was seeing in him now was strategic clarity or something else that needed to be named and addressed.

”Bring her in,” Malka said finally.

Reyna came into the war room the way she came into all spaces without performance, without visible nerves, with the self-possession of something that had been in unfamiliar rooms before and had always left them on its own terms. She took the chair Axel indicated, at the side of the table rather than the end, which was a positioning that said participant rather than subject, and she looked at the elders with the same direct quality she brought to everything.

Malka looked back with equal directness.

”You are Reyna Voss,” Malka said.

”Yes.”

”Of the Voss bloodline.”

”Yes.”

”The Voss bloodline,” Malka said, with the particular precision of someone who had been waiting to get to a specific point, ”has not had a member in contact with this pack since the truce signing. We have records of the original signatories.” She folded her hands. ”Your name does not appear in those records because you would not have been born yet. But the name Voss appears extensively.” A pause. ”In the role of clan leadership.”

Reyna did not shift in her chair. She held Malka’s gaze with the composed attention she held everything. ”Yes.”

”Your relation to the original clan leadership.”

A beat. The first pause Axel had seen from her that felt like something other than deliberate timing.

”Direct descent,” she said. ”The clan leader who signed the original truce was my grandfather.”

The room absorbed that.

”Your grandfather,” Elder Sorn said.

”He died forty years ago. My father held the leadership after him until eleven years ago.” She kept her voice even. ”I am the current heir to the Voss Clan leadership.”

The silence that followed was the particular silence of information landing in a room and changing the dimensions of everything in it. Axel sat with it and felt the pieces he had been assembling since her arrival rearrange themselves around this new central fact.

She was not simply a clan member with useful information. She was not a mid-level operative who had decided to defect from a dangerous faction. She was the heir to the clan that had built the truce. The heir who had walked into wolf territory alone and placed herself in a room with elders and warriors and an Alpha and told them the truth about a threat that originated in her own bloodline.

”The Hollow,” Axel said. ”Their challenge to the truce. Is it also a challenge to your authority?”

Her eyes moved to him. ”The Hollow’s leadership wants the clan. The truce is the mechanism breaking it, starting a war, establishing a victory that rewrites the clan’s power structure. A war leader has a different claim to leadership than an heir.” She paused. ”Yes. It is also a challenge to my authority.”

”So your interest in warning us is not entirely altruistic.”

”No.” She said it without defensiveness. ”I told you I prefer directness. I have reasons that are purely about preventing a war and reasons that are about my own position. Both are real. Both are driving the same behavior in the same direction, which means the conflict of interest is less significant than it might appear.”

Malka looked at her for a long moment. The elder’s face was doing something complicated the careful reassessment of a woman who had come into this room with a position and was encountering information that required the position to be updated.

”You came here without the knowledge of your clan,” Malka said.

”Yes.”

”Without guards. Without backup.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Reyna looked at the elder. Something moved in her expression that was less controlled than her usual register not vulnerability exactly, but an honesty that didn’t go through the same processing as the rest of what she said.

”Because the people around me are either compromised by the Hollow or at risk from them,” she said. ”And because this needed to happen before the next phase, and I was the only one who could make it happen.” A pause that felt different from her other pauses. ”And because my grandfather signed that truce believing it was right. Not strategic. Right.” She looked at Malka steadily. ”I did not come here to be strategic. I came here because it was right.”

Malka was quiet for a long time.

The war room held its silence. Outside the window the afternoon light was moving toward evening, and somewhere beyond the packhouse grounds the forest stood in its deep, patient way, holding everything it held without comment.

”Tell us,” Malka said finally, ”everything you know about the Hollow.”

And Reyna Voss, heir to the clan that had built the truce, told them.
