The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

It took three hours.

By the end of it the war room table was covered in notes. Daren had been writing since the first twenty minutes, his handwriting becoming more compressed as the information accumulated and the pages filled. Soren had a topographic map of the corridor and the surrounding region pulled from the cabinet and was marking it as Reyna spoke, translating her intelligence into visual geometry. Petra sat with her arms crossed and her expression fixed in the controlled intensity of someone processing large amounts of threat data and running tactical analysis in parallel.

Axel said very little. He listened with the complete attention that was one of his most useful qualities the ability to receive information without shaping it prematurely, to let it sit in its full complexity before applying the pressure of interpretation. He watched Reyna as she spoke and he watched the room as it responded to her, and he thought about several things at once in the way that complex situations required.

What she gave them was extensive.

The Hollow had seventeen confirmed members in active operational roles and an unknown number of sympathizers within the broader clan structure. Their leadership was a vampire named Cael, older than Reyna, older than most of the clan’s current membership, with a documented history of opposition to the truce going back to its signing. He had been a minor voice for decades, radical enough to be noted and insufficiently powerful to be dangerous. Something had changed three years ago. Resources had appeared. Organization had followed.

”What changed three years ago?” Soren asked.

”An artifact,” Reyna said. She described it with the careful detail of someone who had researched it thoroughly a pre-truce object of significant ritual potency that had been believed destroyed as a condition of the original agreement. It had not been destroyed. It had been hidden, passed through careful hands over a century, until it reached Cael.

”What does it do?” Axel asked.

”It amplifies the holder’s ability to influence others of their kind.” She looked at him steadily. ”Not compulsion. Vampires cannot compel each other. But persuasion, at scale, over time, the artifact makes Cael significantly more effective at that than he would be naturally.” A pause. ”It explains the recruitment rate. Three years ago the Hollow had four members. Now it has seventeen operationally and an unknown sympathy base.”

”Can it be destroyed?” Daren asked.

”Yes. But it has to be done correctly.” She described the method, specific conditions, specific timing, specific requirements that included both clan knowledge and pack territory elements. The kind of requirements that could only be met by cooperation between the two sides.

Nobody missed the implication.

Malka, who had been listening in near-total silence for three hours, spoke at the end. ”You’ve brought us a problem that requires our joint action to solve,” she said. ”That is either a genuine reality or a very sophisticated mechanism for drawing us into something.”

”Yes,” Reyna said. Simply. Acknowledging both possibilities.

”Which is it?”

”I can’t prove it to you,” Reyna said. ”Not in this room, not tonight. Proof requires time and shared experience, and we don’t have a surplus of either.” She looked at Malka with the particular directness she had shown the elder from the beginning. ”What I can tell you is that the artifact’s location, the Hollow’s operational timeline, and the vulnerability points in their plan are all information you can verify independently. Send your people into the neutral zones they haven’t covered yet. Ask your informant networks, you have them, every pack does, about the movement patterns I’ve described. Check the details.” A pause. ”If I’m constructing this, the details won’t hold. If I’m telling the truth, they will.”

The elder council looked at each other.

Then they looked at Axel.

He had been watching all of it. Reyna’s account, the elders’ responses, the specific moments where skepticism was operating against information quality and the moments where it was operating against instinct. He had been doing his own verification in real time, mapping what she gave them against what his pack had already documented, looking for the joins and gaps.

The joins were precise. The gaps were explainable.

He stood up. ”Give us a moment.”

Reyna stood without being asked and walked out of the war room with the composure of someone who had expected this and found it reasonable. The door closed.

The conversation among the inner circle took twelve minutes.

Soren said the information was too structurally consistent to be fully constructed. Calla agreed and added that three specific details Reyna had provided about Hollow movement patterns matched patrol anomalies they had documented and not been able to explain. Petra said she trusted Axel’s read of the situation and the room and would support whatever he decided. Daren said what Daren always said in these situations, he laid out the risk matrix with flat precision, assigned rough probabilities, and then said the final call was the Alpha’s.

Malka said nothing until everyone else had finished.

Then she looked at Axel and said: ”The truce was built on a moment when two sides decided that what they had in common was worth more than what separated them. I have spent forty years as an elder of this pack warning against forgetting what separates us.” She paused. ”I have perhaps spent less time remembering the other half of that lesson.” She folded her hands. ”What does your wolf say?”

It was the first time in his tenure that Malka had asked him that directly.

He answered honestly. ”It says she’s telling the truth.”

Malka nodded once. ”Then bring her back in.”

When Reyna returned to the war room, Axel was standing at the map.

”We’re going to need a more permanent arrangement,” he said. ”Information exchange, coordinated response planning, joint verification of the details you’ve provided.” He turned from the map. ”That requires more contact than a black stone at the base of a split oak.”

She looked at him. Something in her expression was doing a quiet recalibration. ”What are you proposing?”

”A working arrangement. You have access to the packhouse, specific areas, specific protocols that my Beta will establish. In exchange, we have access to your intelligence on the Hollow in real time, and your assistance in identifying the artifact’s location.” He looked at her steadily. ”You stay on the east wing floor. You move with an escort in pack territory, not because we don’t trust you but because it communicates appropriate boundaries to the pack and to whoever is watching from the corridor.”

She considered it. Not long, she was not someone who needed long for decisions she had already approached. ”Agreed.”

”One more thing.” He held her gaze. ”If we’re doing this as partners, I need complete information. No strategic gaps. No details held back for later leverage.” He paused. ”Including whatever it is about your own situation inside the clan that you haven’t told us yet.”

Her eyes held his.

A moment passed.

”My father,” she said. ”He’s not dead. He’s being held by the Hollow.” She said it without drama. With the flat precision of someone who had processed the fact through enough time to deliver it without breaking. ”That’s the other reason I came here when I did. They have him, and they’re using him as leverage against the clan members who haven’t joined them yet.” Her jaw was set with a control that cost something. ”He has three months before they decide he’s served his purpose.”

The war room was completely silent.

Axel looked at her. He looked at the woman who had walked into his territory alone, who had been in the corridor the previous night in a confrontation she hadn’t described as the rescue it apparently was, who had sat for three hours telling them truth after truth with the composed steadiness of someone who had locked the most personal truth away until the professional ones were established.

”Then we have three months,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Sit back down,” he said. ”We have work to do.”

She sat down.

Around the table, the senior circle of Ashveil Pack and their unlikely ally began the work of building a plan against an enemy that neither side could defeat alone.

Outside, the night came down over the forest, and the corridor held its silence, and somewhere in the dark the clock that had always been running ran a little louder.
