Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We spent years getting real good at saying no to ourselves; turns out, nobody ever stopped to think about who was actually allowed to say yes.

The season after Ping went into the dark was the loudest, gladdest, most exhausting stretch of my whole life — and I want to put some of it down before I hit the frightening part, because the rest of this story is about that frightening part, and I really don’t want the joy to get lost under it.

Eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine names, indexed, scattered, sung into the chorus. And the thing about a manifest? It turns an ocean into a list of front doors.

So we went knocking.

A man called Hsien came home to a terrace village that had kept, for nine generations without knowing why, one random stone in the middle of a wheat field that nobody would ever plough around. A midwife came home to a coast town and found that the three families whose grandmothers she had delivered had all, somehow, named a daughter after a sound they couldn’t explain. Yuhan stopped bringing up just their own valley and started working Ping’s list right alongside the First Author, two arks reading to each other across a table, while Rin — who is fifteen and will be fifteen forever in my head, though she isn’t, she’s actually learning to write a fair hand now — took over the relay board and ran it better than any of us.

The best one was a woman the list gave us as an orchard-keeper from a province that doesn’t exist anymore. When she came up, she looked around at a world a thousand years past hers, stared at the eleven strangers holding her name, and said, with massive irritation: ”Well, somebody has let my trees die.”

”Yes,” Tao Tao said, delighted past bearing. ”Sorry. Would you like to see the new ones?”

They went to look at the new ones.

That was the shape of that season. Doors, and doors, and doors, and the sky over the healed world filling in so fast the Scroll just gave up trying to log each star individually and started logging them by the handful, which it described as ”a professional humiliation I accept with joy.”

And then Mu Chen came to the fire one evening with a face I couldn’t read at all, and Xue Ningzhi behind him with a face I could read perfectly, which was somehow worse.

”The arithmetic’s changed,” Mu Chen said. ”I need to say it carefully, because I’ve checked it nine times and I still don’t entirely believe it.”

”Say it badly,” I told him. ”We’ll manage.”

”Every soul we bring home makes the shore wider.” He sat down. ”I’ve always known that in principle — a person who has been carried learns to carry, that’s been true since Saltmere. But I had it in my models as a small term. A trickle. It isn’t.” He put his hands flat on his knees. ”Lin Bo, a returned soul isn’t a weight the vessel has to hold. A returned soul becomes part of the vessel. Every single one of Ping’s eight million that we bring up doesn’t cost us capacity — after a season or two of being held, it adds capacity. The list didn’t just give us people to rescue. It gave us eight million new hands, and they are joining the weave faster than we can spend them.”

Xue Ningzhi took over, because numbers are hers. ”The projection I gave you a season ago had the shore reaching the size that can hold the Lantern in something between four and seven years,” she said. ”That was honest when I said it. It is no longer honest.” She looked at me, and her voice did something I’ve heard from her maybe three times. ”At the present rate — and the rate is still rising — the shore reaches that size in under a year. Possibly in a handful of seasons. Possibly sooner than that, and I want to be very precise: I do not currently know, because the curve is bending faster than my instrument can follow it.”

The fire was very quiet.

”So it’s close,” Bai Qing said.

”It is not close,” Xue Ningzhi said. ”Close is a word we have used for two years. I am telling you it is arriving.”

And I felt the whole camp go strange and electric and terrified all at once, which isn’t a thing you’d expect good news to do, until you think about what the good news actually meant.

Here is the frightening part.

For as long as we had been building, the shore’s size had been a fact. A measurement. Something you could point an instrument at. We were too small, and everyone knew we were too small, and therefore nobody had to decide anything. The waiting was arithmetic, and arithmetic is restful, because you cannot be blamed for it.

But the moment the shore is nearly wide enough — the moment it is somewhere between enough and nearly enough — the question stops being a measurement and becomes a word.

Somebody has to say the word ready.

And if that word is said one season too early, the largest ark in creation comes down onto a shore that cannot hold it, and the ocean takes the world, and Su Yue drowns a second time and forever, and every single soul alive goes with them.

”I won’t say it,” Xue Ningzhi said, flat and sharp. ”I want that on the record at this fire, tonight, in front of all of you. I built the instrument, and I’ll read you the number off it every single day until the world ends — but I will not be the one to say now. Because the instrument has error bars, and I know exactly how wide they are, and I am not going to be the woman whose confidence interval drowned creation. Anyone who wants that job should be disqualified from having it.”

”I won’t say it either,” Mu Chen said, and he said it gently, but it was firm. ”I can tell you what the weave can carry. I cannot tell you what it can carry on the worst day — when somebody’s child is sick, when somebody’s town is grieving, when four thousand people are a little less able than they were yesterday. I measure capacity. Readiness isn’t capacity. It’s capacity plus whether people actually show up, and nobody can measure that from the outside.”

And I felt it rise in me — that old thing, the oldest thing in me, the reflex of a man who spent five years being the ground under everything. *Then I’ll say it. I’m the unerasable one. Put it on me. If it’s wrong, let it be wrong on me.*

I want to record that I felt it, and that I didn’t say it, and that this is the only part of this account I’m actually proud of.

Because I’ve learned what that reflex is. It isn’t courage. It’s the single candle volunteering for the empty room all over again, and it’s nearly killed me twice and nearly killed the world once, and the answer to who carries the unbearable thing has been the same since a fen-town called Reedmoor taught it to us — and it has never once been me.

”No,” I said, out loud, mostly to myself, and Yun Shu’s hand found mine in the dark and squeezed once, hard, which is her way of saying *good boy* without the indignity of actually saying it.

”No what?” Tao Tao asked.

”No, I’m not taking it,” I said. ”I was about to. I’m not. Because it’s the same shape as every trap we’ve walked into — one soul holding a thing that could drown everyone, alone, because he’s the bravest and therefore the loneliest. That’s the shape the dark has beaten us with every single time.” I looked around the fire at my enormous, strange family. ”So nobody here says it. Not me, not Ningzhi, not Mu Chen, not the dam — the dam can’t, it made us promise we’d tell it, that was the whole third door we gave it, you’ll feel it in us, not in yourself.” I swallowed hard. ”Which leaves exactly one thing in creation big enough to say a word that size.”

Ji Lan, across the fire, had already gone pale, because she’s faster than me and she’d seen where it landed about four sentences before I got there.

”Oh,” she said. ”Oh, no.”

”The world says it,” I told her. ”Every town. Every soul. The same way it reads its own aches and sings its own roads and holds its own floor. We don’t decide readiness and announce it. We ask. And whatever the world answers, that’s the answer — including if it says no.”

”And somebody,” Ji Lan said, ”has to tell eleven hundred million people exactly what they’re being asked, so plainly and so honestly that not one single one of them says yes because they love the Lantern.” She put her face in her hands. ”Which is me. That’s me, isn’t it? That’s the one that’s mine.”

”That’s the one that’s yours,” I said.

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she lifted her head, and she was crying, and she was also — I swear it — smiling that professional smile, the one she gets when the work in front of her is the hardest it has ever been.

”Thirty years I wanted the biggest story in the world,” she said. ”I’d like to file a complaint about the delivery.”
