Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The Redactor spent a whole season learning it couldn’t out-build us, so it stopped trying to break our hands and reached for the one thing it never touched before: the reason we were doing any of it, the quiet engine of our shared hope.

It came as an argument — flung across the whole believing world in that cold, reasonable voice that’s somehow worse than a threat. I have to give it weight, because a weak version would be easy, and this wasn’t weak. It was the cruelest true thing anyone ever said to me, aimed with jeweler’s precision at the three people least able to bear it: the Scroll, the First Author, and me, digging into old wounds like a dull blade.

”You call your law consent,” the Redactor told the world. ”You say it a hundred times a day. Nobody comes home unless they want to. Every homecoming is a choice. You let a reed-cutter stay in her quiet if she asks, and you let the Unnamed Hundred keep their forgetting. You’re so proud of it — that movement that never forces a soul, never pulling them against their will.”

”So let me ask you the one question you’ve never once asked, in a hundred and thirty Chapters of asking everyone else.”

”Has anyone asked the Lantern?”

”Su Yue chose to go. Understand what I’m saying. Of every soul in that ocean, the Lantern of the Nine Skies is the only one who wasn’t taken — who gave their light away on purpose, freely, awake, the most deliberate walk into the dark in history. They looked at the cost and they chose it. And now, three grieving people who couldn’t stand to lose them have built an entire movement — a whole world — around dragging that one soul back out of the choice they made, forcing them back into the light they once abandoned.”

”You’d let a washerwoman rest. But not your Lantern. Because you want them. Consent for everyone, demon-slayer — consent for every nameless drop in the sea — but not for the one you love. For the one you love, you built a machine to override the bravest choice anyone ever made, and you called it a rescue, ignoring their own final, desperate wish to stay gone.”

”I offer the dead their rest. You offer them your need, and tell yourselves it’s theirs, wrapping your own selfishness in the soft, deceptive silk of compassion.”

And then it went quiet, letting the whole world sit in it, letting the silence press against our lungs until we couldn’t breathe.

And the whole world looked at us.

I want to be honest about how badly it landed, because the easy thing would be to say we saw through it at once — but we didn’t, not even for a heartbeat.

It landed because it wasn’t entirely a lie. That’s the Redactor’s craft; it never tells a clean lie, it just tells a true thing bent one degree until it points at despair. And the truth was this: we did want Su Yue back. The Scroll had grieved them for a thousand years. The First Author had loved them, erased them, and carried the guilt until it hollowed her out. I’d built my whole ending around bringing them home. We wanted it in our marrow. And a want that deep is exactly the kind of thing that can dress itself up as someone else’s wish without ever noticing it’s lying, tricking us into believing our greed is virtue.

”Have we?” the First Author said that night, very quietly. She’d gone somewhere behind her own face. ”Have we ever actually asked them? Or have I spent a thousand years deciding what Su Yue would want — first when I erased them, and now when I plan to bring them back — deciding for them both times because I couldn’t bear the alternative?” She looked at her hands, the hands that write the sky, trembling just enough for the light to catch. ”I took their choice away once. What if the homecoming is only me doing it again, the other direction, and calling it love?”

The Scroll on my shoulder had gone a pale, terrible gold — the color it gets when it’s grieving and can’t make it into a number, a dull, aching shade of loss.

”I kept the ember lit for a thousand years,” it said, small. ”Every night. I told myself I was keeping them safe. But talent — what if I was only keeping them so I wouldn’t have to be alone? What if I kept a soul burning against the dark for a thousand years, not for their sake, but for mine?”

And that — the Scroll doubting the one unbroken thing it had ever done — was the moment I got angry. That anger was the first clean thing I’d felt since the Redactor opened its mouth, because it showed me the shape of the trick, a jagged edge cutting through the fog.

”No,” I said. ”That’s the poison. Look what it does. It takes the most loving thing any of you ever did — a thousand years of keeping an ember lit, a whole life of carrying a name you couldn’t bear — and it turns it into a crime, just by asking whether your love might be selfish. And the answer is yes, obviously, partly, of course it is — love is always partly for the one who loves. That’s not a flaw. That’s what love is. The Redactor wants us to think that because we want Su Yue home, wanting it must be wrong. But wanting someone home isn’t conscription.” I stopped, feeling the heat rise in my chest. ”There’s only one thing that would make it conscription. And there’s only one way to know.”

”We ask them,” Bai Qing said from the edge of the firelight, where she’d been quiet the whole time, holding the shape of the thing just like she holds everything else, her eyes unblinking in the dancing orange glow.

”We ask them,” I said.

And the fire went very still, because everyone understood at once what that meant, and how much it would cost to reach that far.

Here is the problem with asking Su Yue anything.

The last time we reached the top of the sky, in the days I still think of as the worst and best of my life, it took a hundred thousand towns remembering the Lantern at once just to hold the door open long enough to touch them. And Su Yue had spoken — forgave the First Author, thanked the Scroll, told us the way to win, and said the thing we’ve built everything on: come back when the whole world remembers. But that was a reaching that nearly ended us, and it didn’t bring them home; it only let us hold their hand across the dark for a moment before we had to let go, leaving us emptier than before.

To reach them again — not to rescue, because the vessel is nowhere near wide enough yet to catch a soul that bright, but only to ask, only to put one question up the whole height of the sky and hear one answer come back — would take more than a hundred thousand towns.

”It’ll take the whole world,” Yun Shu said, doing the arithmetic she always does. ”Everyone the movement has ever touched, singing Su Yue at once, all of it poured into lifting a single question to the top of the sky and holding the line long enough to hear the answer. And—” She looked at me, not softening it, because she never does. ”The Redactor knows the Homelight is the one ark we can’t scatter. It’s been waiting for us to reach for Su Yue. The moment we open that road up the sky, we’re doing exactly what it’s been trying to bait us into since Yuhan. We’d be reaching for the Lantern with the whole dark watching, and no way to bring them home even if we hold — just a question, a prayer, and a thousand miles of night for the Redactor to cut.”

”Then that’s the fight,” I said. ”Not to bring them home. Not yet. Just to ask them a question, and get an answer back, with the whole dark trying to make sure the answer never comes.” I looked around the fire — the First Author hollow with doubt, the Scroll pale and afraid, and past them Tao Tao, who’d been building toward something all night with her jaw set and eyes bright. The founder of the dead can come home was about to be asked to summon every soul she’d ever reached. ”We’re going back up the sky. To ask the bravest person who ever lived one question, out loud, in front of the whole world, no matter the risk.”

”Which question?” Tao Tao said, though I think she already knew, her voice barely a whisper in the cold air.

”Whether they want to come home,” I said. ”And we let the whole world hear the answer. Whatever it is, we will accept it as the final, absolute truth.”
