Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The Letter to the Lantern

The answer, when it came, did not come from me, and I have thought a great deal about why, and I think it is because I was still, even now, half-trying to solve it like a problem — and it was never a problem. It was a grief. And you do not solve a grief.

It was Mu Chen, of course, the man who has spent his whole life beside people who could not hold what they were carrying, who said the thing that turned it — and he said it not to the Openhanded, and not to me, but to the Scroll, gently, kneeling in front of my own shoulder like it was a patient, which I suppose it was.

”You can’t hold hope by denying it,” he said. ”That’s what’s breaking all of you. We’ve been asking the whole world to wait by not reaching — to hold the discipline by clenching against it, every night, holding your hands off the sky. And a not-doing is an emptiness. It’s a lack. And an emptiness is exactly the thing a whisper can fill, every single night, forever, because there’s nothing in it but the ache and the refusal of the ache.” He looked at the Scroll, and then at me, and then at all of us. ”We learned this a long time ago, in the fens, with a pot of soup, and we forgot to apply it to the one weight we’d never had to carry before. You don’t carry grief by not-feeling it. You carry it by doing the small thing — the soup, the door, the walk to the water. The feeling lives in the doing. And you don’t carry hope by not-reaching either. You carry it by doing something for the one you love that isn’t grasping at them.” He turned back to the Scroll. ”We’ve been asking you to wait by being a vault. By sitting silent on a story one inch from its end. And you told us yourself, the season the scribes came with their gold paper — you’re not a vault. You’re a publisher. You cannot bear an untold story. So stop trying to bear it.”

The Scroll was very still on my shoulder.

”...What are you saying,” it said.

”I’m saying don’t reach for Su Yue,” Mu Chen said, and he was smiling now, the gentle exhausted smile, because he’d found the door. ”Write to them. Every night. You’re the greatest publisher there ever was. So publish to the Lantern. Tell them the story of the day. Tell them the shore grew this much. Tell them these nineteen came home, and this valley, and this nameless one read out of a lullaby. Tell them how close we are and how much we love them and exactly how wide the shore is tonight. Don’t hold your longing back — you can’t, it’s not in you — point it at them. Turn every night of waiting from a thing we endure into a thing we give. A letter. A love letter, from a whole world to the one it’s building a home for. You can’t poison a wait that’s full. The whisper only works on an empty one.”

And the Scroll — my Scroll, that had turned away from me toward the star it could not bear to keep waiting for — went so quiet I could feel it thinking, a thousand years of longing turning, slowly, from a fist into an open hand.

”...I could tell them,” it said. ”I could tell them everything. Every night. I could show them the shore.” And then, softer, wondering, the crack in it beginning to fill: ”They’re up there thinking they’re waiting in the cold. Alone. And I could make it so that every single night, they know exactly how hard a whole world is building them a home. They wouldn’t be waiting in the cold anymore. They’d be waiting in the warm. They’d be waiting the way you wait for someone who is coming toward you, not away.”

”Yes,” said Mu Chen. ”That.”

And the Scroll turned back to me on my shoulder, and it published its first letter to the Lantern that very night, and it asked me first, the way it always does, and I have never in my life said yes to anything faster.

DING. (Talent — may I? A different kind of legend. Not for the world. For them.)

To the Lantern of the Nine Skies, from a whole world building you a home:

The shore grew a hand’s width today. Nineteen came home to the eastern coast; a woman got her father back and painted his door green. Yuhan brought up two more of the valley. A child in the fens learned to read your name. We are not making you wait. We are making you a place to land that will not drown a single soul when you come, because you asked us not to come over anyone’s body, and we are keeping that promise the way you kept yours. We love you. We are closer tonight than last night. Sleep warm. We are coming — the right way, the way that keeps everyone, the way you taught us. Every night until then, we will tell you how close. 👍

It changed everything, and it changed it fast, the way the true things always spread.

Because Mu Chen was right: you cannot poison a wait that’s full. The Openhanded — the tenderest thousands, the ones who could not bear to leave Su Yue in the cold — had been reaching not because they were impatient but because waiting felt like abandonment, like turning your back on someone cold and alone. And the moment the wait stopped being a turned back and became a nightly letter, a nightly act of building-and-showing, a courtship — the moment the whole world could spend every night doing something for Su Yue instead of grimly not-doing the one thing it ached to do — the reaching simply lost its reason. You do not run into the sea after someone when you are, every single night, visibly and lovingly building them a boat and showing them the boat and telling them how close it is to done.

The homecoming-mother from the east, the one who had said I won’t leave them up there one more night, was the first of the Openhanded to lay down her reaching and take up the letter-writing, and she wept when she did it, and she said, ”This is what I meant. I just didn’t have the shape of it. I didn’t want to abandon them. I never wanted to drown them.” And Ji Lan — who understood better than any of us that people don’t lay down a conviction when you defeat it, only when you give them a truer one — took the letters and made them a craft, taught the whole world to write to the Lantern, so that the split healed not by one side winning but by both sides discovering they had wanted the same thing all along: not to leave Su Yue alone in the cold. And now nobody would. Not for a single night. Not by reaching too soon, and not by turning away. By staying, every night, and telling them how close.

The whisper kept coming. Xue Ningzhi says it always will, until the day. But it broke against a full wait the way water breaks against a wall, because there is no version of they’re making you wait, that’s betrayal that survives a whole world spending every night building the beloved a home and showing it to them. You cannot call that betrayal. It is the most patient, most active, most un-abandoning love there is. The Redactor had found the one wound it could keep its finger in — and we had filled the wound, not with denial, but with a nightly letter, and its finger found nothing to press on anymore.

And down at the bottom of the world, the dam — the guardian — did the last piece. Because the wait, to be bearable, needed an honest horizon, needed to not feel infinite. And the dam can feel the ocean; it knows, better than any arithmetic, exactly how much shore it will take. So every night, alongside the Scroll’s letter, the dam began to tell the world the true horizon — this close, this much longer, I can feel it, I am the one holding the water and I can feel how near the shore is to ready — so that the waiting stopped being a fog and became a countdown, real and shortening, held by the one thing that could not be wrong about it.

”I never thought,” the dam said to me, wondering, ”that I would be the thing telling the world its wait was almost over. I have been the reason for every wait there ever was. And now I am the one holding the door for a homecoming, and counting down the nights until I can open my hands. I did not know I could be a thing that counts down. I have only ever counted the things I lost.”

”You’re counting toward now,” I said. ”We all are. That’s the whole difference.”

And a thousand miles up, the Homelight — scarred, since the near-drowning, a thinness where a star had almost been pulled from the sky — began, very slowly, to heal. Because Su Yue was not waiting in the cold anymore. Su Yue was being written to, every night, by a whole world; was being shown the shore grow hand’s width by hand’s width; was being told, in ten million voices, we are coming, the right way, and here is exactly how close. They were being courted home. And there is no cold in all the sky that survives being loved toward like that, every single night, by everyone.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. The Scroll sat on my shoulder — back on my shoulder, where it belongs — composing the next night’s letter to the Lantern under its breath, arguing with itself about whether to lead with the two valley-souls or the child who learned to read the name, and I have never been so glad to hear it fuss about engagement in my life.

”You came back,” I said, quietly, just to it.

”I never left, talent,” it said, and then, because it is honest even when it costs it: ”...I turned away for a night. I am sorry. I could not bear it. A thousand years is a long time to hold something one inch from the end.” A pause. ”But you were right, all of you. I was trying to wait like a vault. And I am not a vault. I am the thing that tells them how close they are. That, I can do forever. That, I could do a thousand more years, if it kept them warm while they waited.” It was quiet a moment. ”Every night, talent. I am going to write to them every night until they are home. And then I am going to write down the homecoming, and it is going to be the greatest thing I have ever published, and I am going to make Heaven read it, and I am going to send them the bill for firing me.”

”You do that,” I said.

Across the fire, Ji Lan was teaching a ring of the once-Openhanded how to write to the Lantern — turning the tenderest, most impatient hearts in the movement into the most faithful letter-writers, because that is what she does, she takes a conviction and gives it a truer shape. Tao Tao was arguing with the dam’s horizon-count, not because she doubted it but because she is constitutionally incapable of not arguing with a countdown, and the dam, I think, has come to enjoy it. Mu Chen looked less grey than he had in a season, because a movement that had been tearing itself apart over love was, tonight, whole again, and writing letters. The First Author studied her list, eleven thousand four hundred and one, and one name underlined at the top of a fresh page — and beside it, now, she had begun to draft her own letter, to the name she would bring home last and brightest of all, when it was safe, and not one hour before.

And Yun Shu leaned into me and tasted the soup and said, ”Better. You’re less distracted. A distracted man makes a distracted soup.” She ate. ”We nearly came apart this season. Over loving the same person too much. Do you know how strange that is? Most things break from too little love. We nearly broke from too much.” She was quiet a moment. ”I’m glad we found out you can carry that one too. Same as all the others. You just have to do something with it instead of clench.”

”Same craft,” I said. ”Point it at a different weight.”

”Point it at a different weight,” she agreed, and put her head on my shoulder, the one without the Scroll on it, and we sat and watched a whole world write love letters to a star.

We have, after all, a whole world to bring home — and the one we love most is waiting at the top of the sky, and we have finally learned how to wait with them instead of merely for them, which is the difference between a vigil that breaks you and a vigil that holds.

We are coming, Lantern. The right way. And every night until then, we will tell you how close.

Sleep warm
