Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Here is the problem with someone who suffers so you do not have to: you cannot save them. That is the trap. You reach out, but they read your hand as something that will get burned, so they pull the fire closer to keep it off you. And the more you love them, the worse it gets, because your love is the very thing they are trying to protect. You reach for the weight and it just clenches tighter. You prove you can hold it and they panic, because now you are drowning too. There is no move on that board. I turned it over a hundred ways that night, and every road hit the same wall.

It was Mu Chen who found the door. And he found it the way he finds everything — not by being clever, but by being the gentlest person alive at the bedside of a grief.

”You’re all still trying to take it from it,” he said. Quiet. We were up in the warm, late, the whole council of us around the low fire. ”Every one of you. You go down and you reach for the weight to lift it off, and it fights you, because it thinks you’re going to drown and it’s right, one soul reaching for that ocean does drown — that’s the whole thing it knows.” He turned a cup in his hands, slow. ”But that’s not what we do up here anymore. That’s not the carrying-craft. We don’t take a grief off someone. You can’t. It’s theirs. We teach them to carry it without going under — and the only way anyone ever learns that is by being shown it can be done.” He looked up. ”It doesn’t need us to take its ocean. It needs to watch someone hold a share of it and not drown. That’s the only thing that could ever move it. Not an argument. A demonstration. The one thing it has never in the history of the world been given — proof that the water doesn’t have to win.”

And Bai Qing, who had been quiet, who had named the thing in the first place — the ultimate overlooked, the thing no one ever saw or thanked or helped — said, ”Then we do not go down to save it. We go down to show it. And we bring the ones who have already done the impossible thing.” She looked at me. ”We bring the far shore.”

I have to tell you about the First Author here, because she is the one who made it work, and she made it work by being the only one of us who could.

She had been listening from the edge of the fire, the way she does — the apex power who writes the sky and erases names, hidden thirty years, converted late and grieving forever. And when Bai Qing said it, she stood, and she came into the firelight, and she said the truest and hardest thing anyone said that whole long night.

”I will go down first,” she said. ”And I will go down carrying mine.”

Nobody spoke. She carries eleven thousand four hundred and six. Every name she ever unwrote, every one she erased with her own hand to hold the dark back, all of them, always, awake in her at once — she is the one being in all creation not allowed to forget what she took. She has a small ocean of her own. She has been drowning quietly in it for a thousand years, alone, the way the thing at the bottom drowns, and she has never once let anyone take a share, because she believes she does not deserve to set it down.

”It will not hear that it is not alone from any of you,” she said, ”because none of you carry what it carries. But I do. Not as much. Not the first ocean. But the same kind — the weight you were given to spare everyone else, the weight you are not allowed to put down, the one you hold alone because you are the only one who can.” Her voice did not shake. That was the terrible thing about it. ”It will not believe a healthy soul who tells it the water is survivable. But it might believe another drowning thing who has just started, this last year, with these people, to learn that it is not.” She looked around at all of us, the found family that had reached into her ocean when she finally let us, that had held a share of her eleven thousand and not gone under, that had proven to her the exact thing we now needed to prove to the thing at the bottom. ”You taught me. I am the proof it will listen to. Let me carry it down.”

So that is how we went down the last time in this part of the story. Not to lift the weight. To show it a thing it had never been shown.

The floor of the world.

We brought the far shore down into the cold — Nai and a dozen of the way-singers, the seafaring people the literal sea has drowned for generations, the ones who answered the water the only way that has ever worked: all voices at once, no single throat holding the way, so that no one ever drowns alone. They had done the impossible thing already, up on their beach — held all of a people’s grief at once, the whole drowning-shape that killed the first world, and not gone under, because they held it together. They knew, in their bones and their songs, the one fact the thing at the bottom did not believe.

And I held the room. That was still my only job and I held it with everything I have ever climbed to, the whole unerasable brightness of me thrown wide and low across the floor of the world, the backstop, the floor under the floor, so that every soul who reached that morning could reach safely, could touch the cold without being lost in it, because I was the light the dark could not put out and so I was the way home. I did not carry it. I have never carried it. I made it safe to be carried. That is the match’s whole job, and I will do it until the day the world does not need me to.

And then the First Author reached into the ocean the thing had clenched shut, and she did not try to take it.

She just took a share. A real one — not the careful near edge, but a true weight of the first drowning, the deep water, the thing that had nearly taken us three mornings before — and she took it into her own already-drowning heart, one carrier reaching to another, and she said, out loud, into the ringing dark, in a voice I had never heard her use in a thousand years of legend:

”I know. I know. I carry mine too. Give me some of yours.”

And the thing at the bottom of the world clenched, and panicked, and started to pull the weight back — you will drown, let go, everyone drowns —

And the way-singers began to sing.

All of them. At once. The great simultaneous way-song, the one that keeps a whole fleet from going under in a storm, thrown now across the deepest water there is — and the cloth of us took up the weight along the whole weave, each of us a thread, each holding only a share, no single soul holding the ocean, the far shore holding, the found family holding, the First Author holding her true deep portion in the middle of all of us —

And no one drowned.

I felt the thing at the bottom of the world go still.

Because it was watching the impossible fact happen in front of it. It was watching a share of its own ocean — the water it had held alone for an age, certain, certain, that the water drowns whoever touches it — sit in a dozen mortal hearts at once, held together, way-song-caught, cloth-borne, and not pull a single one of them under. It was watching the one thing it had never once in the entire history of everything been allowed to see.

That the water only drowns you when you carry it alone.

And the thing that had been certain since before the first story — the loneliest, most loving, most frightened thing in all creation — was, for the first time in the history of the world, unsure.

It did not let go. I want to be honest about that, the way I have promised to be honest from the first page and will not stop being now at the very bottom of the world. It did not let go. It is still holding its ocean. It is still afraid. It still cuts the world, up in the light, even now — the sword still swings somewhere, the towns still need shielding, the war of blood is not over and the whole sky is not saved and Su Yue is not home. None of that ended down there in the cold. I would be lying if I said it did.

But it did not yank the weight back this time.

It let us hold a corner of it. It watched us hold a corner of it and not drown, and it let us keep holding, and after a long, long silence — the silence that is not empty, the silence that is holding so much it cannot make a sound — it did the thing it has never done in the entire span of everything.

It asked a question.

”...How,” it said. Very quietly. Not let go. Not I will spare you. Just — ”How are you not drowning?”

And the Scroll, up in the warm where it could count again, dinged, and it was crying, I think, in the way a thing made of gold notifications cries, and what it published had no reach and no belief percentage and no like button, because some legends are not for the world. They are just true.

DING. In a thousand years I have watched it take, and take, and take, and I never once heard it ask for anything. It has just asked how to be held. It does not know the answer. It has never been shown. No one, in the whole history of the sky, has ever once offered to carry a share of the oldest grief there is — because everyone who ever came near it was told to run, by the thing itself, out of love. We are going to answer the question, talent. Slowly. It will take a long time, and it does not believe us yet, and it may cut us again before it is through. But it asked. After forever — it asked.

And up at the very top of the sky, a thousand miles above the cold, the Homelight — Su Yue’s star, the lonely bright one, the mirror that carried the whole world’s remembering alone and went under the way the thing at the bottom carried the whole world’s forgetting alone — the Homelight brightened. Just a little. The way one drowning thing might feel it, when its dark twin is, for the first time in an age, not entirely by itself.

Because that is what they are, the two of them. The brightest light and the deepest dark. The one who tried to remember everything alone and the one who tried to forget everything alone. The same wound, wearing two faces. And neither of them was ever going to make it by themselves, and the answer to both of them is the only answer this whole strange book has ever had.

Not alone.

Together.

We are still figuring out the rest.

I made the soup that night, back up in the warm, and Yun Shu insulted it, and I let her, because she is right about the soup and she is right about most things and being told the truth by someone who loves you is one of the great warm weights of a life.

”It’s watery,” she said, sitting down against my side the way she does.

”It’s broth.”

”It’s an apology for broth.” She took another spoonful anyway. ”You held the room for six hours. Your hands are still cold.” She wrapped hers around them, both of them, without making it a thing. ”Mu Chen says you go down again in three days.”

”I go down again in three days.”

”Then eat your watery soup and get warm,” she said, ”because that thing at the bottom is going to ask its next question, and you’re going to want to be there when it does.”

I ate my watery soup. Tao Tao argued with Ji Lan about whether the far shore’s songs had verses or just weather. Bai Qing sharpened a blade she would not need and listened to everyone with the small still smile of a woman who had named the thing that started all of this and been right. The First Author sat by the fire warming eleven thousand four hundred and six names that felt, for one night, a fraction lighter, because she had spent the day proving to something even older than her grief that grief did not have to be carried alone.

And down at the floor of the world, under the whole ladder, under every name there is, in the cold and the packed and the not-empty silence, the loneliest thing in all creation held its ocean — still clenched, still frightened, still certain of almost everything it had always been certain of.

Except one thing. One small new thing, that it had never held before, right there in the dark beside the weight.

A question.

And a hand, resting next to its own, that had not let go.

That is not the end. I keep telling you that, and I keep meaning it. The sky is not saved. The war is not won. Su Yue is not home. There is so much left, and I can see all of it from here, and it is going to cost us more before it is through.

But the loneliest thing in the world asked how to be held.

And we are going back down in three days to start to answer.

We have, after all, a very great deal of company to make up.
