Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Mu Chen had the answer. He had to. He’d spent his whole life staring at this one wound, and I think he was just waiting for the rest of us to wake up to what he’d known all along.

He sat down across from me by the dead fire. He didn’t bother being gentle, which was how I knew it was serious. Mu Chen is the kindest guy I know. When he stops softening the edges of a thing, it means things are bad.

”You’re trying to remember that you love her,” he said. ”Stop. It isn’t going to work. It’s the one thing that can’t work.”

”I remember perfectly,” I said, my voice flat. ”That’s the problem. I remember every bit of it.”

”I know. Listen to me, because this is the only wound I’ve ever actually been good at.” He leaned forward. ”For thirty years, I’ve sat with people who had their ache cut out of them—one at a time, the old way, back before the dark learned to do it to everyone at once. Widows who could recite their husbands’ favorite things without crying. Mothers who knew their children’s names and felt nothing. I’ve brought the feeling back for a hundred of them, and I’m going to tell you the secret that’s going to win this.” He paused. ”You can’t just tell a man he loved his wife. He knows. He’ll list her habits for an hour. But the feeling? The feeling doesn’t live in the knowing, Lin Bo. It never did. It lives in the doing.”

”The doing.”

”The ache doesn’t come from the fact of her. It comes from the small stuff you did together when you weren’t even thinking about love. Painting a door. Humming the wash-song with your hands in the water. Making the soup the way she made it.” He opened his hands. ”The knowing sits right up front, where the dark can flatten it. But the feeling comes in the side door, through your hands, where the knowing can’t block it. You don’t remember your way back to someone. You live your way back. One small thing at a time.” He almost smiled. ”So, we aren’t going to tell the world to grieve. We’re going to make the world start doing things again.”

And I’m telling you, that’s the whole thing. I’d been looking for a grand answer this whole war, some bright, enormous key. And the key? It turns out you can’t just recite love. You have to make the soup.

He proved it on Meiling’s husband first, and I watched him do it.

He never said her name. He took the old man out to the door she had painted—that faded green one—and handed him a brush and a tin of matching paint. He said, ”It’s gone dull. She wouldn’t have let it go dull.” And he had him paint it. That was it. The old man painted his dead wife’s door in the failing light, the way he’d watched her do it forty years ago. His hands remembered the motion—and halfway through the second panel, his brush slowed, then stopped. He made a sound I won’t describe, and he wept. The good kind of weeping. The kind that means someone has come home. It wasn’t ’I remember that I loved her.’ The love itself just walked in through the side door, into a house where the knowing had kept the ache out for too long.

”There,” Mu Chen said, very quietly, to no one in particular. ”Welcome back.”

Then he looked at me. I knew it was my turn, and I was actually afraid—properly afraid now, feeling it, which was a mercy all on its own.

I didn’t know what my ’door’ was. Then I did. It’s the most ordinary thing in my life, and my whole life is pretty ordinary now, on purpose. It’s the soup. Every night, at whatever fire we find, I make the soup. Badly. It’s terrible soup—I never learned how, and the noodle shop I once dreamed of would’ve gone under in a week—and every single night, Yun Shu tastes it and says the same dry thing, some little jab at my cooking. I say the same thing back. That worn-out little exchange is the most ’us’ thing we have. It’s nothing. It’s everything.

So I made the soup.

I didn’t try to remember loving her. I just did the work. I cut the roots the same wrong way. I got the fire too high, just like always. Yun Shu sat by me while I did it, because she always does, hollowed out as she was, moved by a habit older than the hollowing. When I put the bowl in her hands, she tasted it. Out of a place deeper than anything the dark had reached, in a voice gone flat but with the words still perfectly hers, she said, ”That isn’t soup. That’s warm water with ambitions.”

And it came in the side door.

All of it. Her. Not just the idea of her. Her—the whole enormous, unreasonable weight of loving this exact person, sitting exactly where it had always sat. It came back so fast and so hard it nearly knocked me over. Nine years of it. The soup, the bad jokes, the two of us sitting at another fire at the end of the worst war the world has ever seen. I looked at her, and I felt it. I would’ve given the whole sky just to feel it again, and it turned out all I had to do was give her a bad bowl of soup.

Her eyes came back a half-second after mine did. I watched it happen. I watched the ’flat’ go out of her face and my Yun Shu walk back into it. She looked at the bowl, then at me, and said, unsteadily, ”...since Chapter nine, you understand. Do keep up.” Her voice broke in the middle of that dry line—it never does that—and I put my head against hers. We just sat there with that cold, terrible bowl of soup between us, finally feeling everything, both of us, on purpose.

After that, we knew what to do. So did the rest of the world once we told them, because it’s something anyone can do. That’s the point. That was always the point.

We didn’t tell people to remember. We told them to cook the dish. Sing the song with your hands in the wash. Walk the path you used to walk. Sit up all night with the person who can’t feel, and don’t lecture them—just be there, doing small, ordinary things, until the ache comes in the side door where the knowing can’t stop it. Tao Tao took the way-songs and did the bravest, stupidest, most correct thing: she made everyone sing them badly. Off-key. Off-beat. Feeling instead of accuracy, warmth instead of the perfect note. A wrong, warm note carries a name better than a right, cold one ever will. On the far shore, they sang Ohe rough, broken, and weeping. I heard Nai’s voice crack in the middle of it—furious, grieving, and alive—and I got my wish. I got to see Nai furious again. I’ve never been so happy to be yelled at.

It ran across the world the way the good things run now—the nearest way, hand to hand, kitchen to kitchen. Not the brightest reach. The warmest. And up at the top of the sky, the Homelight began, slowly, to climb again.

Because here is the thing I finally understood, watching it climb—the thing that I think is the real shape of how this ends, if it ever ends. The Homelight doesn’t feed on how much the world knows. A perfect, complete, hollow record doesn’t lift it an inch; we proved that this month, the hard way. It feeds on how much the world *minds*. Warm remembering. Not the brightest light—I knew that. Not the most complete map—I learned that at the vault. And now the last piece: not the most perfect memory either. The warmest one. The most-minded one. The win was never going to be a world that knows everything. It’s going to be a world that cares about everything, all at once. You can’t get there by nailing names into the sky. You can only get there one bad bowl of soup at a time.

The dark went quiet again, and I could feel that it was a different kind of quiet. It had been giving ground this entire war, and I don’t think I understood that until now. It took our bodies, and we made ourselves unkillable enough to stand. It cut our roads, and we sang them back. It showed us all our grief at once, and we walked to the nearest window. And now it had reached for the very last room, the innermost one, the place where things matter—and it had found the door standing open and the room empty, because meaning was never kept in a room at all. It isn’t stored anywhere the dark can reach. It’s made, fresh, every time two people do a small thing together. There’s nothing there to delete. You’d have to stop every kitchen in the world.

It isn’t beaten. I keep saying that, and I keep meaning it. You don’t beat the silence under the world just by teaching it that love lives in soup. But it’s running out of rooms. Every move it has made has been further in, and it’s just found out there’s almost nothing further in than this. Whatever it reaches for next will be very close to the center of the whole thing. I can feel us getting near it. Not there yet. Near.

The Scroll got its grief back with everyone else, and I’ve never been so happy to see a thumb.

DING. Reach: four billion. Minding: RESTORED. I didn’t have a metric for that until tonight. I’ve made one. It’s the only one that ever mattered. Talent. I can feel Su Yue again. I want you to know that. For one whole week I could recite them and not miss them, and it was the worst week of a thousand years. I have my grief back, and I’m so glad to be sad I could sing. You didn’t fix it with the sky. You fixed it with a soup so bad your wife has insulted it every night for nine years. Keep making the terrible soup, talent. It is, and I say this as the complete record of the world, the single most powerful thing you have ever done.

I made the soup again the next night. It was still bad. Yun Shu insulted it. I felt every particle of it—the insult, the soup, the nine years, the whole small loud life I chose instead of a noodle shop and instead of a throne in the sky—and I wouldn’t trade one cold, bad bowl of it for all the perfect memory in the world.

There are still gaps on the map. The dark is still down there, thinking. We aren’t going to finish it yet.

But the fire is warm, and the soup is terrible, and everyone at this fire knows exactly who everyone is, and cares. That’s the whole war. I looked for a bigger answer for a long time.

You just have to make the soup.
