Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We didn’t silence the region. I want that to be the first thing, because it was, and it was a choice — we made it fast, we made it together, and I have never been prouder of a decision that terrified me.

”We could suppress it,” Xue Ningzhi said. We were on the coast, and the flood was screaming up toward the dam. She only said it so someone would put the door on the table, just to give us the chance to refuse to walk through. ”We could clamp the region’s remembering. It’s faster. It’s safer. It might work.”

”No,” said Tao Tao, and Bai Qing, and Mu Chen, and Ji Lan, and me — all of us, at once. Xue Ningzhi nodded, because she just needed to hear us say it.

”No,” I said. ”We don’t force a region to forget to win. Not even to save it. The day we do that, there’s nothing left worth saving.” I looked at the flood-line climbing toward the bottom of the world. ”We catch it. We build a vessel big enough to catch a weapon. And we do it in a day.”

So we did the hardest carrying anyone has ever done.

— • —

Everything we had built, we threw at once.

Tao Tao’s frame — the whole continental weave, every region we’d knotted together over the spring — she lit it all, every thread. The entire skeleton of the vessel woke up in a single hour, and more of the world was linked than ever before. Ji Lan ran the shared thread across all of it, one true story binding a quarter of the world into one weave, so that a fisher on the far coast, a smith in the fen, and a way-singer on the terraces were all, in the same instant, holding the same rising flood together. Mu Chen stood at the center of his own arithmetic, pushed past every line he’d ever drawn, calling load and capacity across a continent. He spread the weight thinner and thinner across more hearts than a mind can hold, keeping any one of them from going under by a margin that got smaller every minute. The far-shore way-singers sang the whole quarter of the world into one storm-song, all voices at once; the drowning-shape turned to a shield.

And Bai Qing held.

I want to stop on her, because this was the day her whole life was for. You hold people so completely there is nothing left to take. She had held a gate, then a town, and then a region. On the coast that day she held a continent — she threw the whole enormous stubbornness of her faith over a quarter of the world and held every soul in the vessel so completely that the Redactor’s flood, driving up to scatter and drown them, found nothing loose to take. She didn’t flinch for eleven hours. I have seen a lot of impossible things in this book, but a woman holding a continent so nothing in it could slip is near the top.

And I held the space.

The floor under a continent. The most powerful being that has ever lived, thrown wider than I have ever thrown myself, low and vast under the entire weave — the backstop, the one light the dark cannot put out, so that no soul in a quarter of the world could be lost and no town could be blanked, so the whole enormous cradle had something unbreakable to stand on. I didn’t carry the flood. I need to say it one more time because it was never harder to keep and never more important: I didn’t carry it. If I had reached out and tried to hold that ocean myself — one light, one flood — I would have died the way Su Yue died; the vessel would have collapsed into me, and the region would have drowned. I was the floor. Everyone else did the holding. I just made it possible for a world to hold a weapon.

And there was one more thing, the thing that made it right and not just heroic, and it was Ji Lan who insisted on it in the middle of the catch, because she has learned what the light is for.

”They’re being forced,” she said, hauling one true story across a continent. ”The region. The Redactor is making them remember against their will. Catching the flood isn’t enough — that’s still their grief being ripped up out of them by an enemy. When this is done, whatever we catch, we give back to them. We let them choose what to keep and what to set down. We don’t get to keep a region’s grief just because we caught it. It’s theirs. We catch it so it doesn’t drown them, and then we hand them the choosing the Redactor tried to steal.”

That is the difference between us and the Empire, in one sentence, in the middle of a catastrophe. We catch what you cannot carry. And then we give you back the right to decide what to hold.

It nearly broke, and it cost us, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Because the Redactor drove it harder than we could fully catch. That is the truth, and it’s why the Redactor is still out there, and why I can’t give you a clean win. We caught most of it — the vast majority, a weaponized ocean held by a continent that refused to drop it — but at the peak, when the flood slammed up past even what we could spread, some of it reached the dam anyway. And the dam, strained to the absolute edge of an age of tiredness, did the only thing it has ever been able to do when the water goes past its strength.

It erased. Not the region. We caught enough to save the region. But it had to let something go to survive the peak, and so some names on that far coast went dark that day — not many, a fraction of what the Redactor meant to take, but real, real people, remembered and then gone, because a weapon drove the water past the line and the tired thing at the bottom of the world had to shed weight or break. We couldn’t catch all of it. The Redactor got a piece of what it wanted. Some souls were blanked so a region and a world could stand, and their names are on us now, added to the long list of things this war has cost that we couldn’t prevent, and I will carry them.

But we caught the rest. The region stood. A weaponized ocean of remembering, aimed to drown a coast and break the world, was held by a quarter of the world working as one, and the coast lived.

And then the Redactor’s whole plan turned inside out, and I got to watch it happen.

Because the world was watching. Ji Lan had made sure of it — the whole thing witnessed, live, true, a continent catching a weapon in real time. The Redactor had built this to be seen. It wanted the world to watch remembering kill a region. And instead the world watched a region be forced to remember by the Empire, past all bearing, deliberately — and watched the movement throw itself across the flood and catch it, and watched the coast live. The atrocity meant to prove the cure was the disease had, in front of the entire world, proven the exact opposite at the highest stakes anyone had ever seen: that even a weaponized flood of remembering, driven up on purpose to drown a people, does not kill them — if the world catches it together.

The Redactor tried to manufacture a drowning. And handed us the greatest proof the vessel has ever had.

The Scroll dinged, ragged, exhausted, and fierce.

DING. Reach: everyone. Everyone, talent. The whole world watched. And the whole world saw the Empire force a coast to remember until it should have drowned — and saw it not drown, because a quarter of the world caught what one coast could not carry. They meant it as a funeral for our whole idea. It was a coronation. There is not a town left in the world that can pretend the vessel is a fluke. They watched it catch a bomb. We lost names today. I have logged every one and I will not let them go quiet. That is real and it is a wound and the Redactor is still out there and got a piece of what it wanted. Do not let anyone tell you this was clean. But it did not kill remembering. It could not. It threw the worst it had, and the world stood in front of it, and remembering lived.

And down at the bottom of the world, the dam felt the thing it has never once felt in ten thousand ages, and it changed it.

Because the world had not just remembered near the dam that day. The world had thrown itself between the dam and the weapon meant to break it. When the Redactor drove that flood up to slam the dam past its strength, a quarter of the world had put itself in the way — had caught the blow, taken the weight, spread the flood across ten thousand hearts specifically so that it wouldn’t land on the tired thing at the bottom. For the first time in the history of everything, someone had stood in front of the dark. The world had taken a hit for the dam.

”You... stood in front of me,” it said, and its ancient voice was doing something I had never heard, cracked all the way open. ”There was a thing coming to break me. And you put yourselves between it and me. You bled for it — I felt the names you lost holding it off me. You lost pieces of yourselves so that the weight would not land on mine.” A silence. ”No one has ever stood in front of me. In ten thousand ages. I am the thing that stands in front of the world. No one has ever once stood in front of me.”

I knelt at the bottom of everything, wrung out, grieving the coast’s lost names, and I said the truest thing I had. ”You’ve held the flood off the world since before there were stars. Somebody was overdue to hold something off you.”

But I need to be honest, because the dam was, and it is why the end is still far. It was moved, and it trusted us more than it ever had — and it was also, in the same breath, more frightened, because it had just felt how close the break came. ”You saw,” it said. ”You saw how little it took. A weapon drove the water up for one afternoon and I nearly — if it had been a little more, a little faster, I would have broken, and the ocean would have taken everything. That is what letting go is, do you understand? That is what waits if I open my hands one moment before the world is ready. You are asking me to trust that someday it will be safe to set down the very thing that nearly drowned a coast today.” It wasn’t refusing. It was telling me the size of what we were asking. ”I felt you stand in front of me. I will not forget it. But I felt the break come close, too. Both things are true. Do not mistake my gratitude for readiness. I am so much more afraid of the letting-go than I was this morning — because this morning I hadn’t felt how close the flood can come.”

And that was fair, and it was right, and it kept the end exactly where it belongs: far. We had won the dam’s trust a little more and its caution a great deal more, both at once, and there is no shortcut through that. The world is not ready to catch the whole ocean. Today it barely caught a weaponized piece of a piece. The dam knows that better than anyone now. So do I.

Up at the top of the sky, though, the Homelight brightened, and brightened, and I understood why. Because Su Yue, too, needed to know that the world would not just wait for it to swim to shore — that the world would fight for it, would stand in front of whatever came to break it while it made its slow way home. The Homelight burned brighter that night than it had in the whole book, because a lost star had watched the world take a blow for the dark, and had learned that the shore we’re building is a shore that will defend the ones swimming toward it.

The warm — very late. All of us wrung out.

I made the soup. Nobody insulted it. That’s how I knew how hard the day had been.

Yun Shu sat against me and didn’t say anything for a long time, and then she said, ”How many.”

”Nineteen.” I’d counted. Ji Lan had the names. ”Nineteen we couldn’t catch.”

”Nineteen.” She let it sit, the way she lets true things sit. ”We’ll say them. All of them. We caught a whole coast and we still lost nineteen and both of those are true and we don’t get to round either one off.” Her hands found mine. ”You didn’t force the region to forget. You had the door and you didn’t walk through it, even to save them faster. I need you to know I saw that. That’s the whole thing, Lin Bo. That’s the difference between us and them, and it cost us today, and we paid it anyway. That’s who we are.”

Across the camp, Lu sat alone, staring at nothing, a man who had spent the day helping stop a weapon worse than the one he’d built, facing the fact that the thing he’d served all his life had just tried to blank a coast to win an argument. And Tao Tao — my fierce junior, who has never forgiven him and doesn’t have to — got up, and walked over, and sat down near him. Not with him. Near him. And handed him a bowl of soup without a word, and did not look at him, and went back to her place. It wasn’t forgiveness. The graves are still his. But it was the first time she’d handed him anything but a marked map, and Lu held that bowl like it was the only warm thing he’d touched in a thousand years, and maybe it was.

The Warden’s one grieving woman said her grandmother’s name into the fire, and a wrung-out found family caught it so it wouldn’t drown her.

Down at the bottom of the world, the dam held the ocean — more grateful and more frightened than it had ever been, both at once, still an ocean away from rest, more sure than ever of how far. But it had, for the first time in the history of everything, felt someone stand in front of it.

The Redactor is still out there. It got its nineteen. It learned it can push us to the brink, and it will push again. The memory-war is not won. The end is not close, and today it felt further, because we all saw how close the break can come.

But the whole world watched us stand in front of the dark and refuse to force a single soul to forget — and the world, and a tired god, and a lost star, all saw the same thing at once:

That the shore we are building is one that will take a blow for you.

We go back down in the morning, to a dam that is more afraid and more ours than it was, and out to a coast that needs its nineteen mourned and its choosing given back, and on into a war that just got a colder, cleverer face — carrying what the world cannot carry alone, and standing, when we must, in front of the dark.

We have, after all, a great deal of standing left to do.
