Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The vessel got big enough that spring; I actually let myself forget the oldest rule of my whole strange life — the brighter you burn, the more you wake the dark.

We were way past regions now. We were building across a whole quarter of the world — the fen, the river-country, the terraces, and the coast beyond them, all knotted into one great weave, whole nations of the living learning to carry together. Mu Chen’s load-charts had gotten so big he’d started drawing them on the sides of barns. Tao Tao’s frame ran to the horizon. And every day the discipline got a little harder to hold, because a vessel that size has a thousand edges — and keeping that flood steady is easy when it’s one region, but murder when it’s a whole coastline. Xue Ningzhi watched the flood-line like a woman watching a fuse.

I should have known. Everything I have ever built, the dark has come for. That’s the deal. Every tier I climb makes me a bigger light, and a bigger light throws a bigger shadow — and the shadow always, always fills with something that wants to put me out. I had been so busy with the tender work — the dam, the Hundred, the consent, the soup — that I’d let myself believe the Empire was a thing we’d already beaten. Held. Contained. A war of blood managed down to embers.

It was Lu who set me straight, and it cost him to do it, so I want to give him that.

He came to my fire white-faced, with Xue Ningzhi beside him — the two ends of one broken faith — and he said, ”It’s not over. I have been telling myself it was over because I wanted it to be; because I have done enough and I am tired and I wanted the graves I made to be the last of it. They are not the last of it. There is still a center to the Empire, and I know who runs it, and I know what they have just figured out, and we have to move now.”

Here is what Lu told me; I need to lay it out plainly, because it’s the cleverest and cruelest thing anyone has aimed at us in the whole book.

The Empire didn’t dissolve when Lu turned. It didn’t dissolve when Xue Ningzhi dismantled its outer machinery from inside. Those were just branches. The root stayed. And at the root, colder than Lu ever was, more patient, a true believer in the way only the truly frightened can be, sat the one they called the Redactor — the Empire’s oldest authority on erasure, the keeper of the blank page, who had watched two of the Empire’s finest architects defect and had drawn from it exactly one lesson: that the enemy had learned too much, and must be proven wrong before the whole world listened to them.

Because that is the Redactor’s whole faith, and I have to state it fairly, the way I try to state everything fairly: remembering kills. Forgetting is mercy. It’s the Empire’s creed and it’s the dam’s terror wearing a crown, and the Redactor believes it the way you believe the ground is down. And the Redactor had spent this whole year watching the movement prove it false — town after town remembering their dead and not drowning, a whole quarter of the world carrying its grief and living — and to a true believer, that isn’t a joy. It’s a heresy. It’s a lie that must be exposed before it spreads.

And the Redactor had figured out how to expose it. From the defectors, from the spread of the weave, from watching us too closely — the Redactor had learned the two things we most needed no enemy to know.

That the dam exists. And that it has a limit.

”They know,” Lu said, and his voice shook. ”They know there’s a thing holding back the first flood. They know that when the world remembers faster than it can carry, the extra lands on that thing, and it has to erase to survive. They know your own rule — no faster than the flood. And they have understood what it means as a weapon.” He looked at me with the face of a man watching his own tools turned to a use worse than he ever dreamed. ”You spent this whole season learning that remembering too fast breaks the dam. The Redactor learned the same thing. And where you built a discipline to never do it — the Redactor built a plan to do it on purpose.”

There it was.

The Redactor was going to weaponize remembering. Take a region — a real one, full of real people — and force it to remember catastrophically, all at once, far past anything the vessel could catch. Trigger it. Flood it. Drive the whole quarter’s worth of grief up into that one region at once, deliberately, past every limit, until it overwhelmed the vessel and slammed into the dam with more weight than the tired old thing could possibly hold — so that the dam would do the only thing it can when the water goes past its strength.

It would erase the region. Catastrophically. A whole region of the living, blanked in a night, because they were made to remember more than the world could hold.

And then the Redactor would stand in the wreckage and point, and say to the entire watching world: There. That is what remembering does. That is what the movement brings. A whole region, drowned in memory, gone. We told you. Forgetting was always the mercy. Come home to the blank page, before they do this to you.

A manufactured drowning. An atrocity built to prove the cure is the disease.

”It’s genius,” Xue Ningzhi said, cold and flat and sick. ”I hate it and it’s genius. They don’t have to beat us in the field. They just have to make the world watch remembering kill, once, at scale, and every town we’ve saved becomes a fluke and every town we haven’t reached slams its doors. They turn our own gospel into the thing people are afraid of. They turn the dam’s mercy into a bomb.” She looked at me. ”And the horror is — the mechanism is real. It’ll work. If enough remembering lands on the dam fast enough, it will erase a region to survive. We’re the ones who proved that. We handed them the schematic without knowing it.”

The Redactor had already begun. That was the worst of it. Even as Lu spoke, we could feel it — down through the connection to the bottom of the world, I felt the flood start to rise, wrong, fast, not the gentle disciplined climb of a region choosing to remember but a violent artificial surge, grief driven up into a single region against its will, the water climbing toward the dam far faster than any weave could catch.

They’d chosen a region on the far coast. A real place, full of people who had never asked to be a weapon in anyone’s argument. And the Redactor was forcing it to remember — pouring a quarter of the world’s grief up into it all at once, a deliberate over-flood, aimed like a spear at the dam.

We had maybe a day before it hit the limit.

And here is the trap, the thing that made it the hardest problem we had faced, and I want to state it as starkly as it stood, because the obvious answer was a door we could not walk through.

The obvious way to stop an over-flood of remembering is to stop the remembering. Reach into that region and suppress it — clamp down the grief being forced up, silence the memories, make the region forget fast enough that the water never reaches the dam.

But that is the Empire’s move. That is imposing forgetting on a region that didn’t choose it. It’s the exact crime we refused at the Unnamed Hundred, the exact thing that makes you a kinder Editor instead of a different one. To save the region from the Redactor’s weapon, we would have to use the Redactor’s weapon — force a memory-state on people against their will. And the moment we did that, we would have lost the whole war whether the dam broke or not, because we would have become the thing we were fighting, and the Redactor would have won the argument that actually matters.

So we couldn’t let the dam break. And we couldn’t force the region to forget.

Which left exactly one road, and it was insane, and it was the only one we had.

We couldn’t stop the flood. We would have to catch it. All of it. A weaponized ocean of remembering, driven up faster than any vessel had ever been asked to hold, aimed straight at the tired thing at the bottom of the world — and we would have to throw a cradle wide enough and fast enough to catch it before it landed, at a speed that broke every rule of the discipline we’d built the whole vessel on.

We had a day. I didn’t sleep. We go to the coast in the morning to stand between the dark and the thing that means to break it.
