Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

By spring, the Homelight had climbed most of the way up the sky — near the top for the first time in a thousand years — and I let myself think that meant we had almost won. I want to walk you through how wrong that was; the wrongness is the whole thing.

First, I have to tell you what the climbing actually was, because I had that wrong too, and getting it right is the only way the rest makes sense.

The Homelight is Su Yue’s star. The fixed one. The lonely one at the very top, the lamp of the nine skies, the brightest single light there has ever been. For a thousand years it hung up there and didn’t move, and I always assumed that if it ever rose, it would rise because someone had made it brighter. That isn’t what happened. Su Yue’s light never changed — not by a candle. What changed was the sky underneath it, the whole warm waking world, minding, all at once, lifting it. The star didn’t get brighter; the sky finally got warm enough to carry it. I stood under it that spring, thinking we had nearly climbed to the top, when what had really happened was that the world had finally learned to hold up a light it had left hanging alone for an age.

That should have told me everything. It didn’t. I am slow, and I was happy, and I thought the war was almost over.

I had reason to be happy — that was the cruelty of the timing. The census was nearly closed: tens of thousands of dead roads sung back into the world, tens of thousands of lit windows, the great terrible sum drawn down almost to nothing by four billion people each walking their own nearest lane. The hollowing was long past. The world was warm again, loud and minding everything, singing badly and gloriously in every kitchen from the far shore to the fens. Tao Tao had her fire back. Nai had his fury back. The Scroll had its grief back, and pointed cheerful thumbs at everything that moved. I would walk into a town now and be handed soup and shouted at and loved, and everywhere I went the map was greener, the sky was warmer, and the one lonely star at the top of it was climbing. If you had asked me that spring, I would have told you we were three good seasons from the end of the whole long war. I would have been right about the timing and wrong about the ending, which is the worst way there is to be right.

Then the light reached the floor of the world, and I found out it had never been the war I thought.

Here is a thing about brightness that I knew but didn’t understand: brightness wakes the dark. I have said that to you a dozen times — every tier I climbed made me a bigger target, every light we lit drew the silence toward it. I thought that was the whole of the rule. But there is a second half, and I only learned it when the Homelight got high enough and warm enough to throw light all the way down to the bottom of everything, where no light had reached in an age.

Brightness wakes the dark. And enough of it, at last, lets you see it.

I saw the Editor that night. For the first time. Really saw it — not the gentle voice at my ear, not the struck-through quill, not the distance or the cold coming off a line of Forgetters. The thing itself. I can’t describe it well, because it isn’t shaped like a thing; it’s shaped like the absence a thing leaves. But I can tell you what I saw it standing on, because that is the part that broke the war open. It was standing on an older world. A first world. Down there at the floor of everything, lit for the first time by a star the whole sky was finally carrying, there was a drowned age under all the other ages, and the Editor was standing on it the way a scar stands on a wound.

I could see it down there. It sounds like a dream, but I was awake, and I saw it. A whole world at the bottom of the world, drowned and still — every hearth of it lit, every face of it holding perfectly still under the weight of water. Not dead. That was the horror. Not dead, just held, forever, under everything it had ever remembered. An age that never got to end. The silence lay over the surface of it like the last skin of ice on a lake with something enormous and patient underneath, and I understood, before it said a single word, that I had spent four years fighting the lid of a very old grave without ever once wondering what was inside it.

And it spoke to me. The gentleness was gone.

That is the thing I noticed first, and it frightened me more than the sight of it. In four years the dark had never once dropped that mild, kind, reasonable voice. Now it did. What was underneath wasn’t cruelty; it was older than cruelty, and more tired than anything I have words for, and it sounded almost relieved to finally be seen.

”You have never looked at me before,” it said. ”Nobody has, in an age. It takes a great deal of light to see this far down, and you have finally made it, and I find I am almost glad, because I am so very tired of not being understood.” A pause. ”So let me tell you what I am. You are about to undo me, and you should at least know what you are undoing.”

And it showed me the first age.

There was a world once, it told me, before the First Author, before the ladder, before Su Yue ever lit their lonely star. In that first world, nothing was ever let go. The world remembered everything. Every death. Every loss. Every ache anyone had ever felt — all of it, all at once, held forever, because forgetting hadn’t been invented yet and nothing had ever once been set down.

”And it couldn’t bear it,” the Editor said. ”Do you understand me? It wasn’t wicked. It wasn’t weak. It was a child holding an ocean in two hands, alone, and it began to go under. The whole world, drowning in the whole of its own memory, because it had never learned the one thing you all take for granted now — it didn’t know how to let anything go.”

”So the world saved itself the only way it could. It learned to forget. It cut the weight loose to keep from going under, and the cutting was mercy, Lin Bo. The cutting was the kindest thing that has ever happened. Without it there is no world at all — only a drowned thing at the bottom of its own remembering, holding everything, feeling everything, forever, unable to die and unable to bear being alive.”

”I am the cut,” it said. ”I am the thing the world grew so that it could let itself let go. I am not your disease. I am the scar over the oldest wound there is. And yes — I have kept cutting for an age. Past when it was needed. Far past. I know what I have become. I know I take too much now, I know I have been trimming a healed world down toward silence for a thousand years, I know. But I am the only one who remembers why. That is the whole of what I am for. Nobody remembers the drowning. You cannot. It is the one thing the forgetting had to forget first. So I remember it. I remember it so that none of you ever have to — and I keep cutting, because I am the only thing standing between this world and the day it holds all of its memory at once again and goes under a second time, forever, with no forgetting left to save it, because it will have used its last forgetting undoing me.”

Then it said the thing I haven’t been able to put down since.

”I am not trying to end the world. I am the only thing that has ever kept it from ending. Finish your climb, Lin Bo. Light your whole sky at once. Teach four billion people to hold all of it, together, the way the first world held it. And you will not wake a sleeping world. You will drown a healed one. I am begging you — and I have never begged anything, in an age, I didn’t know I still could — let me keep cutting. It is the oldest mercy there is. You are about to call it murder and tear it off, and then every soul alive is going to learn, all at once and forever, exactly why the world could not carry itself.”

I want to tell you that I had an answer.

I didn’t have an answer. I sat at the floor of the world under a star the whole sky was carrying, and I looked at the drowned age the silence was standing on, and I couldn’t prove one word of it wrong. Worse — it fit. It fit everything. It fit why the brightest single light was always the trap; why Su Yue blazing alone had never healed anything, only woken the dark. It fit why the world was ”dying of forgetting” — a tourniquet does that, cut a thing off long enough from everything and it dies of the very mercy that once saved it. It fit the whole shape of four years, and I had spent all four of them certain of exactly one thing underneath everything else: that remembering was good, and forgetting was the enemy, and my whole strange accidental life was on the side of the light.

Here is the thing that kept me sitting there until the star went pale. If it was lying, it was lying better than anything had ever lied to me — and the dark had never once needed to lie. It had spent four years telling me small, terrible, true things and letting them do the work. Lies I can fight. I am, whatever else I am, very good at being believed, and a lie I can simply out-believe. But you cannot out-believe a true thing. Every instinct I had, sitting on the floor of the world, told me the silence had finally stopped bargaining and stopped tempting and stopped cutting, and done the last thing a cornered thing does — which is tell the truth. Because it had nothing left. And because it wanted, after an age of being no one’s mercy but its own, for one single living soul to understand it before the end.

The silence had just told me, in a voice too tired to lie, that the light might be the thing that drowns us all.

I didn’t sleep. I sat with it. For the first time in the whole war I didn’t know whether I was the match that saves the world, or the fool about to set fire to the one wall holding back the sea.
