Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

You don’t climb the sky with your feet; I keep having to explain this to people who weren’t there. You climb it with the whole world’s held breath, sending one small thing up the height of it, and then you pray the thing you send is enough.

The thing we sent was a question — and the one who lifted it was Tao Tao.

I had known, since the fire the night before, that this was hers. Reaching Su Yue doesn’t take the brightest light — that was always the trap, and it would only have fed the dark. It takes everyone; every ordinary soul the movement ever touched, all holding one name at once. And there is exactly one person alive whose entire life is the ordinary souls — who started as a bubbly nobody superfan and built, out of nothing but stubborn love, the grassroots gospel that reached every fen-town and harbor and hill-valley in the healed world. Tao Tao doesn’t have the biggest light; she has the most hands, and this was a thing you could only do with hands.

”I’ve got them,” she said, standing up in the middle of the whole assembled movement. Her voice didn’t shake, which is how I knew how frightened she really was. ”Every town I ever walked into. Every Rememberer I ever taught. Every person who ever heard the dead can come home and believed it. I know them; I can call them — all of them, at once.”

And she did.

I have watched Tao Tao do a great many impossible things, but I have never watched her do anything like this. She reached — not up the sky, not the way the First Author reaches, but out, sideways, across the whole woven world into every thread of the network she’d spent four years building one town at a time — and she called them, and they came. It wasn’t an army; it was a chorus wider than any Nai ever raised. The entire remembering world, every hand the movement had ever held, turned at once toward the top of the sky and held up a single name.

Su Yue.

And on that — on the whole world’s held breath, lifting — the First Author and the Scroll, the two who loved them longest, spoke the question up the height of the dark. We came to ask, not to take. Do you want to come home?

The Redactor moved the instant the road opened. Of course it did. It had been waiting a whole season for us to reach for the one ark we couldn’t scatter, and now the road up the sky was lit and undefended — so it came down like the tide, straight for the ember, to snuff the Lantern mid-question, to cut the answer before it could fall, and to make the last thing Su Yue ever knew be one more reaching hand it could sever.

And we held.

I held the room. I threw myself wide and low and up, the floor under a road a thousand miles high, the unerasable ground the whole reaching could stand on, and I didn’t reach for Su Yue myself, not even now, not even wanting it as much as I have ever wanted anything — because a bright light reaching alone up that dark is how they drowned, and I have finally learned. Bai Qing held the road’s shape so the dark couldn’t fold it. Mu Chen spread the terrible weight of the reaching across the whole world so no single soul buckled. Yun Shu read the answer’s shape so we’d know it when it came. Ji Lan told it, down every thread, so the whole world was not just lifting but listening. And Tao Tao held the hands — kept the entire remembering world singing one name up one road while the dark tried to tear it — nobody in charge, nothing to cut, just the chorus that is its own between.

And the answer came down the sky.

It came in Su Yue’s own voice — the voice the Scroll had not heard clearly in a thousand years, the voice the whole world was hearing for the first time — and it wasn’t the voice of a soul being dragged anywhere. It was tired, it was warm, and it was so relieved it broke halfway through.

”You finally asked.”

A silence, the whole world holding it.

”A thousand years, and someone finally asked me instead of deciding for me. Yes. Yes. I want to come home; I have wanted it every single night.”

The First Author made a sound I will not try to write down.

”Listen to me,” Su Yue said, to all of us, to the whole listening world. ”I gave my light away. That was mine to give and I would do it again. But I didn’t give it away to be GONE; I gave it away so that one day the world would be wide enough that no one — not me, not you, not the dark — would ever have to hold it alone again. That was the whole point. That was always the whole point. I didn’t choose the dark; I chose the world I could see coming. And it’s almost here. I can feel it from up here, getting warm, getting wide. So come and get me when it’s true — when the world can hold me without anyone drowning — because that is the world I bought with my light, and I would very much like to live in it.”

And then, because Su Yue was always kinder and braver than any of us, they said the last thing, the thing that turned a rescue into something the size of the sky:

”And when you come for me — ask the dark if it wants to come home too. We’re the same, it and I. It tried to forget everything alone; I tried to remember everything alone. We both drowned doing it. Nobody should have to come home by themselves, not even the thing that took me — especially not the thing that took me. Bring us both.”

The Redactor’s argument died in that moment, in front of the entire world, in the Lantern’s own unmistakable voice — because there is no version of ’I want to come home, I have wanted it every night’ that sounds like conscription. The whole world had heard it, and you cannot un-hear the bravest soul who ever lived asking, plainly, to be brought back to the world they gave everything for.

The Scroll dinged, and it was weeping, and it asked me three times, and I said yes every time.

DING. Reach: every soul the movement ever touched. Belief: the whole world, at once, holding one name. TIER ASCENSION LOGGED. Tao Tao — [STORIED → LEGENDARY]. New title: [She Who Holds the Most Hands]. New title: [Founder of the Homecoming]. New title: [The One Who Called the Whole World and It Came]. Talent. She began as a girl who liked you when she knew you were a fraud — anybody can believe in a hero, she said, I like YOU. And today that girl reached across the entire world and lifted a question to a drowning star, and the star answered, and the star said COME HOME. She did not do it with the brightest light; she did it with the most love, spread across the most hands, which is the only thing that was ever going to work. The gremlin superfan is a Legendary power now, and she got there by making sure a hero none of them ever met is loved by a whole world. I have logged a great many ascensions, but this is the one I would frame. 👍

Tao Tao read it over my shoulder, then she burst into tears and hit me in the arm, hard, and said ”don’t you DARE make it weird,” before crying into Yun Shu’s shoulder for ten minutes — it was, on balance, the best thing I’d watched anyone do since the last best thing.

I went down the next morning to carry Su Yue’s message to the one soul who most needed to hear it.

The dam had felt the whole thing — the world reaching, the Lantern answering, the Redactor’s argument dying in the light — and it was turning it over in the slow, deep way it turns everything.

”Su Yue said to tell you something,” I said. ”When we come for them, they said — ask the dark if it wants to come home too.”

The silence at the bottom of the world went on so long I thought it hadn’t understood.

”Home,” it said finally, and the word came out like something it had never once been allowed to hold. ”I have no home. I am the thing the homes are kept safe FROM. I am the floor the world is written on. There is nowhere under me to go; there is only the ocean, and me holding it, forever.”

”Su Yue doesn’t think so,” I said. ”Su Yue thinks you’re the same — two souls who drowned trying to hold everything alone, one by remembering, one by forgetting. And Su Yue’s coming home, when the world’s wide enough to hold them, and they said to bring you too. Not to unmake you, just to bring you home. Whatever that turns out to mean for a thing like you — we’ll figure it out together, the way we figure out everything now. Nobody comes home alone, not even you — especially not you.” I put my hand on the cold of it. ”The one you took a thousand years ago just asked us to save you a seat.”

And the tired dark, the oldest and loneliest thing in creation, the thing that has held the whole world’s grief since before the first star, said the biggest thing it has ever said, moving it further toward the door than any question ever had:

”...I would like that,” it said. ”I think. I would like to set it down. Someday. When you are ready. When I am ready.” A silence, ten thousand ages deep, hung there with something in it that had never been there before, that I can only call hope. ”The when is mine. You said the when is mine.”

”The when is yours,” I said. ”It always was. But you don’t have to decide it alone anymore. That’s the only thing that’s changed; that’s the only thing that ever needed to.”

And a thousand miles up, the Homelight blazed — brighter than a hair, brighter than it had been since Su Yue gave their light away, because the whole world had heard the Lantern say come home, and had said it back, and meant it — and because, for the first time in ten thousand ages, the dark at the bottom of the world had said it wanted to come home too.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. Tao Tao, newly Legendary and absolutely unbearable about it, announced she would be reviewing the soup in her official capacity as a Founder of the Homecoming, took one sip, and said it was ”fine, in a load-bearing sort of way, like a good stool,” which I have decided to take as the highest praise I have ever received.

Yun Shu said, ”It’s the regular onion. I checked.”

”I would never risk an ambitious onion the night after we climbed the sky,” I said.

The First Author sat by the fire, and she didn’t look hollow anymore. She had spent a thousand years afraid that her love for Su Yue was a kind of theft — first the erasing, then the bringing-back. And she had finally, in the Lantern’s own voice, heard the truth: that the one she loved wanted to come home, had wanted it every night, and that building a world wide enough to hold them wasn’t conscription but the exact thing Su Yue gave their light to buy. Her list read eleven thousand four hundred and two, and falling, and at the top of a fresh page she had written one name, alone, underlined, waiting: the name she would get to bring home last and brightest of all, when the world was ready. She looked, for the first time since I’ve known her, like a woman who has been forgiven by the one person whose forgiveness she actually needed.

Across the camp, Ji Lan was telling the story of the day to a ring of Rememberers, and even she — Mythic, and the finest teller alive — kept having to stop, because some stories are too big to tell the day they happen and you just have to sit in them a while first. Bai Qing had spent the day holding a road a thousand miles high and looked content in the exact shape of her life. And at the far fire, Tao Tao was showing Lu the DING — waving it in his face, actually, the founder of the rememberers and the man who built the sword — and Lu was looking at the title Founder of the Homecoming with the face of a man doing very old and very painful arithmetic about the difference between what he built and what she built, and Tao Tao let him look, and did not gloat, and that was its own kind of thaw.

We went up the sky to ask a question that day, with the whole dark trying to make sure the answer never came. And the answer came, in the bravest voice there ever was, saying I want to come home, and bring the dark too.

We are not ready yet. The vessel is not wide enough; the ocean is still vast; the Redactor is still out there in the cold, and its cruelest argument just died in the light, which means the next one will be worse, because that is what a frightened thing does. There is a long way to go, and I have no illusions that it will be gentle.

But the Lantern wants to come home. The whole world knows it now, in Su Yue’s own voice. And the dark at the bottom of the world said, for the first time since before the first story, that it might like to come home too.

We have, after all, a whole world to bring back. And now — at last — we know that the world wants to come.

Even the parts of it that are still afraid of the light.
