Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Lu didn’t see us. He saw the garden, and the woman in it, and thirty-one years, and I don’t think there was room in him just then for anything else.

He came up the lane slowly, like a man walking into cold water.

He stopped at the low gate. He put one ink-stained hand on the top of it. He stood there.

Mei was at the far end of the garden with her back to him, humming, patting the dirt down around her white flower.

I stepped out of the lane before I’d decided to. Xue Ningzhi came with me.

Lu turned his head and saw us.

He was not, I think, even surprised — a man who counts had probably counted this too.

’You found the road,’ he said quietly. ’I wondered if you would.’

’You came to offer her the door,’ I said. ’The third one. Now that it exists.’

’Yes.’

He looked back at his wife.

’Yes. I have carried a question for thirty-one years, Lin Bo, and your people have finally made it answerable, and I find I cannot live one more spring without the answer.’

’I am going to tell her the whole truth, in the light, exactly as I did before — that she had two children, and that there is now a way to hold them without drowning, and that she may have them back if she wants them.’

His hand tightened on the gate.

’And then I am going to let her choose. Freely. Awake.’

’And she is going to choose what she chose before. She is going to look at her garden and her good marriage and her peaceful life, and she is going to decline. And I will finally have run the experiment with your medicine in her hand, and mercy will win, and I will be able to stop.’

His voice cracked on the last word, just slightly.

’Do you understand? I am not here to hurt her. I am here to be told I did not destroy the world.’

’No,’ I said. ’You’re not.’

He looked at me.

’You don’t want to offer her the door,’ I said. ’You want to have already offered it. You want the answer without the asking.’

’Because if you actually stand in that garden and say the words — do you want them back — then for one moment, before she declines, the door is really open, and she might really walk through it.’

’She might say yes.’

’And if she says yes—’

I made myself say it, gently, because it wasn’t a weapon, it was the thing he’d been running from for thirty-one years and someone had to say it kindly.

’If there’s any chance at all she’d want them back, then you didn’t save her. You lost her. To a lack. And the lack was in you.’

’And that’s why you’ve walked past this gate thirty-one times and never opened it. Not because you were sure she’d decline. Because you were terrified she wouldn’t.’

Lu stood very still.

’You are the best there has ever been at this,’ I said. ’And you have never once been able to run the one experiment that mattered, because you cannot survive either answer.’

’Yes means you failed her. No means—’

I stopped.

I had just seen the whole of it. It was worse than I’d thought.

’—no means you were right, and being right means two million four hundred thousand people, one grieving family at a time. You can’t afford yes and you can’t afford no.’

’So you’ve stood at this gate for thirty-one years doing arithmetic instead of knocking, because arithmetic never makes you find out.’

’Then what,’ said Lu, and his mildness was entirely gone now, and underneath it was just an old man at his wife’s gate, ’would you have me do.’

’Nothing,’ I said. ’That’s what I came to say. Leave her be.’

’She chose, and it was a trap of a choice, but it was hers, and I don’t have the right to open this gate and neither do you.’

I heard the dark agreeing with me, warm and pleased, and I hated that it agreed with me.

’I stood in this lane for an hour deciding we had no right to tear a scar off a happy woman to settle our argument. And I still think that’s true. So let’s go. Both of us. Let her plant her flower.’

And I meant it.

I want that on the record.

At the hundredth turning of this whole strange story I stood at the gate and chose to walk away and leave the question forever unanswered, because I could not find the hole in the dark’s mercy, and because a happy woman in a garden is a happy woman in a garden, and who was I.

Mei stood up.

She’d heard us — quiet voices at her gate on a still afternoon carry.

She turned around, brushing the dirt off her knees, mild and unbothered, an old woman wondering who’d come to call.

She looked at me, a stranger, with friendly puzzlement. She looked at Xue Ningzhi, another stranger, the same.

Then she looked at Lu.

And something happened in her face that I will be trying to describe for the rest of my life.

She didn’t know him.

I watched her not know him — there was no recognition in it, none, the erasure had held, she looked at her own husband and saw an elderly stranger in traveling clothes.

But something moved anyway.

Something underneath the not-knowing, something old and deep and blind.

Her friendly expression faltered. Her hand came up to her chest, the way you touch a place that aches.

And her eyes filled, all at once, with tears she plainly did not understand, on a pleasant spring afternoon, at the sight of a man she had never in her life seen before.

’Oh,’ she said softly, to Lu, wiping at her eyes, embarrassed, apologetic, the way the town said she always was.

’Oh, I’m sorry. Goodness. I don’t—’

She laughed a little, wetly.

’You must think I’m a silly old woman. I don’t know what comes over me. It’s the spring, it always—’

She stopped.

She looked at him harder, not with memory, but with the thing that lives under memory and doesn’t erase.

’Have I met you?’ she asked.

’I feel as though I ought to know you.’

Her voice went strange and quiet.

’You walk past. In the spring. Don’t you. I’ve — I’ve seen you, at the gate, over the years, and I could never—’

Her hand pressed flat against her chest.

’Why do I want to cry when I look at you? I’ve wanted to cry when I looked at you for years, and I never knew who you were, and I never—’

The tears came properly now, bewildered, decades deep.

’I’m so sorry. Who are you? Why does it hurt to look at you?’

And Grand Archivist Lu, the most dangerous man in the world, the prophet of the great mercy, the man who had unmade two million lives to prove that forgetting could set a person free — stood at his wife’s gate and listened to her tell him that she had been grieving him, blind, without a name, for thirty-one springs.

The cut hadn’t taken.

It had never taken.

He’d stood in this lane every year believing he was looking at his own success — a happy woman, unburdened, free — and she had wept at the sight of him every single time and apologized to strangers for it and called herself silly, for thirty-one years.

And he’d never known.

Because he came in spring and left before she came to the gate, and did his arithmetic, and went home sure.

He’d taken the names. He hadn’t taken the grief. Nobody can take the grief.

And so he’d left her the whole weight and stolen only the one thing that might have let her understand it, and she had carried it in the dark, alone, calling it the season.

I watched him understand this.

I watched thirty-one years of certainty go out of a man like a lamp.

’Mei,’ he said. It was barely a word.

— • —

Here is where the whole book turns, and I want to be careful, because it would be so easy to tell it wrong.

Nobody chose for her.

That’s the first thing.

We didn’t open the gate.

She opened it — she’d been reaching at it for thirty-one springs, weeping at a stranger, asking the empty air why it hurt, and the only cruelty left in the world would have been to keep not answering.

The dark had told me to leave her at peace.

But she wasn’t at peace.

She was a woman who’d been asking one question her whole life into a silence that never answered, because the man who could answer it had made himself unaskable.

Walking away wasn’t mercy.

Walking away was just letting the silence win one more time.

So Xue Ningzhi went to the gate.

Not Lu. Not me.

The woman who knew this exact road from the wrong end.

’Mei,’ she said gently.

’My name is Ningzhi. I’m not going to tell you anything you don’t ask me to. But I think you’ve been carrying something very heavy for a very long time without knowing what it is, and I think that’s the loneliest way there is to carry a thing, and I want you to know you don’t have to decide anything right now.’

She spoke the way you speak to someone at the edge of deep water.

’There is a story. It’s a sad one, and you’re in it, and it explains the spring, and the white flower, and why it hurts to look at this man. We can tell you all of it, and we won’t leave you alone with it — there are people, there’s a whole way now, of holding a thing like this so it doesn’t pull you under. Or we can close this gate and walk away and never come back, and you can keep the peace you have, and that is also all right, and nobody will think less of you.’

She paused.

’You’ve been asking what it’s for. You can have the answer, or you can have the quiet. But you should get to choose which — really choose, this time, knowing both doors are real. That’s all we came to give you. The choosing.’

And Mei stood in her garden with dirt on her hands and tears she’d carried for thirty-one years finally, maybe, about to have a name, and she was quiet for a long, long time.

I won’t pretend I knew what she’d say.

I didn’t.

The dark didn’t either; I could feel it holding its breath, and for once it had nothing to whisper, because a real choice was being made in the light and there is nothing the dark can do with that but wait, same as the rest of us.

She looked at the white flowers along her east wall.

She looked at her small good house.

She looked, for a long time, at the weeping stranger at her gate who hurt to look at.

’I don’t want all of it,’ she said at last, slowly, feeling her way. ’I’m sixty-one. I’ve a good life and a good man and I won’t— I can’t take a flood, at my age, I haven’t the—’

She shook her head.

’If you tell me I have to drown in it to have it, then keep your story, I’ll manage, I’ve managed this long.’

’You don’t have to drown in it,’ said Xue Ningzhi. ’That’s the whole thing that’s new. That’s the door that wasn’t there before.’

Mei was quiet again.

Then:

’But I want to know what I’ve been crying about.’

Her voice broke clean in half.

’Thirty-one years. Every spring. Planting that flower and not knowing why, and telling everyone I’m silly. I’m not silly. I’ve never been silly. Something happened to me and I’ve grieved it my whole life and I was never even allowed to know what it was.’

She wiped her face with a dirty hand and left a streak of soil across her cheek and looked, suddenly, fierce — the fierceness the town said came out of her over other people’s dying children.

’I don’t want the flood. But I’ll not spend another spring crying at a stranger and calling it the season. I want the name. I want to know who I’ve been missing. And if you’ve truly got a way to hold it that doesn’t put me back on the floor — then yes. Tell me. I’ll carry the name. I’ve been carrying the weight of it blind for thirty-one years; I can carry it a good deal easier with my eyes open.’

And that — that, right there, on her knees in the spring dirt — is the answer to the whole war.

Not the flood, not the cut. The third thing.

She didn’t want to drown in it and she didn’t want it gone.

She wanted to know what she was carrying and to not carry it alone.

She wanted the name and the hands.

It took the world two million four hundred thousand erased souls and a burned valley and a thousand years of a fading star to find that door, and a sixty-one-year-old woman with soil on her face walked straight to it in an afternoon, because she’d been standing outside it, weeping, her entire life.

The Scroll dinged. Very softly.

Gold, and wet, the way it gets now.

DING. NEW LEGEND PUBLISHED. REACH: 4.2 MILLION SOULS. BELIEF: 94%. Talent. A soul just chose to remember, freely, in the light — the one soul the whole enemy edifice was built on top of. The foundation stone said yes.

I felt the ember MOVE. Hard.

Harder than Ohe.

Harder than anything since the Mourning Downs.

Not saved. Not near.

But talent — the Homelight is brighter tonight, over a garden in Anfen, than it has been since Su Yue gave their light away.

She is going to be all right.

It will take a long time.

But she is going to be all right, and she is going to know their names, and she will not be alone in it.

That is the whole of what we do. That is the entire thing. In one garden. With one woman. Thank you for staying to see it.

I have not told you what Lu did, and that’s because I’ve been putting it off, and because it’s the part I don’t fully understand, and because it isn’t finished.

He didn’t say anything, for a while.

He stood at the gate and watched his wife choose, with her own free will, in the full light, with the third door open in front of her — the exact clean experiment he’d crossed a country to run — and he watched her choose to remember.

To carry it.

To take the weight back, held up by others, rather than keep the empty peace.

Mei chose the thing his whole life said no one ever would.

And she chose it not as a rebuke of him — she still didn’t know him, still just felt the ache — but that made it worse, or better, I can’t tell which.

Because it wasn’t personal.

It wasn’t Mei forgiving her husband or damning him.

It was just a human being, offered the real choice for the first time, reaching past the mercy he’d bled the world to give her and taking up the harder love instead, because it was hers, and she wanted it, names and all.

Everything he built stood on the certainty that she wouldn’t.

’I was too late,’ he said finally.

He wasn’t talking to us. He might not have been talking to anyone.

’That’s what I always told myself. A man who is too late has to be right instead.’

He was looking at Mei, who was being helped to a bench by Xue Ningzhi, who was beginning — gently, slowly, with the whole long careful work of it ahead — to be given back her children’s names.

’But I wasn’t too late. There was nothing to be late for. The door she wanted was never behind me. It was ahead of me. Thirty-one years ahead. I wasn’t too late, I was too—’

And he stopped, because the word wouldn’t come, or wouldn’t be borne.

Too early.

He’d lived one turn of the wheel before the medicine, and being early is only another way of being too late, and he’d built a cathedral of mercy on a lack that time itself was going to fill without him.

He didn’t collapse.

I’d half expected it and it didn’t come.

He just got very quiet and very old, and after a while he said, ’I have to sit down,’ and he sat down on the low wall by the gate, a small mild man in the spring, with nothing left of the thing that had made him the most dangerous person alive except the ink in the creases of his hands.

I took Granny Fen’s pot off my shoulder, because I take it everywhere, and it has been to the top of the sky and across the sea and now to a garden in Anfen.

I poured a bowl.

I put it in his hands.

He’d told me once, in a tent, that the good tea used to come up the eastern road and there hadn’t been an eastern road for some while, and I’d been too dim to hear what he was confessing.

He looked at the bowl.

And this time I stayed to watch.

He ate it.

I don’t know what it means.

He’s not fixed; you don’t fix thirty-one years and two million souls with a bowl of noodles, and I’d be lying if I told you the war ended at that gate, because it didn’t.

The Unbinding is still running on the coast.

The Empire’s machinery is still turning without him.

The Editor is still the silence under everything, and the Editor never needed Lu, never cared about his mercy — it only ever wanted the quiet, and it will find other hands.

There’s a whole ocean of world I haven’t crossed and a step above Mythic I haven’t taken and a star at the top of the sky that is brighter tonight but nowhere near home.

This isn’t the end.

I’ve told you from the first page this thing is open-ended, and it still is.

But the man who was the human face of the forgetting sat on a wall in the spring and ate a bowl of noodles and watched his wife choose to remember, and whatever he does next — and I don’t know what he’ll do next, and neither does he, and that’s the honest truth of where we are — he will do it as a man who has finally added up the figure at the bottom of the column, and knows what it comes to.

— • —

We stayed in Anfen three days.

Mei’s good man came home from up-country and Xue Ningzhi sat with both of them and began the long slow work, and Mu Chen was sent for, and it will take months, maybe years, and she will have hard springs ahead now that the flower has a name.

But she’ll have them with her eyes open, and with hands to hold her, and she told me on the second evening, fierce and wet-eyed over a bowl of noodles she’d decided she liked, ’I’d rather know. I’d always rather know. Tell that to whoever needs telling.’

I’m telling you.

She wanted it told.

Lu left on the third morning.

Alone, north, on foot, the way he’d come.

He didn’t say where he was going and I didn’t ask and I let him go, because you cannot arrest a man into remembering and you cannot force a broken prophet to become a good one; you can only leave the door open and stay near it and wait, which is, as Xue Ningzhi said a hundred miles ago, the whole of what we’re for.

What he does now is his.

I’ll tell you when I know.

I genuinely don’t yet.

The Homelight was brighter that last night over Anfen.

Not saved.

You could still barely find it.

But Nai, three provinces away on the coast, would be looking up at the same faint star and singing it home, the way her people have for a thousand years, and now she knew its name, and so did a woman in a garden, and so, at last, did the man who’d spent his life in the dark under it.

I thought about a small loud life, the kind I decided I wanted somewhere back around the time I stopped pretending I’d ever open a noodle shop.

Full of people who know me all the way down.

I’ve got that now, mostly.

Yun Shu three provinces off, running a world that sings its own roads. Tao Tao evangelizing counting-songs at terrified villages. Ji Lan making immortal things she’ll never sign. Bai Qing holding doors, weighed exactly. Nai steering by a named star. A girl called Qiu Yan with terrible boots carrying the whole thing east on her own two feet. Mu Chen on the road to Anfen to help a stranger carry her own children’s names.

And somewhere north, an old man walking, with a bowl of noodles somewhere inside him, and a choice ahead of him I can’t call.

That’s a hundred turnings of this story, and here’s what it comes to: the world runs on what we’re willing to remember about each other.

I used to think that was a curse — I spent the first ten Chapters begging people to please, please stop spreading rumors about me.

I don’t beg anymore.

Keep spreading them.

Somebody, somewhere, is grieving in the dark with no name for it, and the only thing that’s ever helped is another person who won’t stop saying the names out loud.

I’ve been trying to sit down for four years.

I’m not going to.

There’s a garden in Anfen, and it turns out there are gardens everywhere, and every one of them has somebody in it planting a white flower and calling themselves silly.

I know what it’s for now.

I’m going to go and tell them.
