Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We went down the next morning — Mu Chen, and the whole family with him, and at a distance behind us, the whole watching world. There wasn’t any way to hide what we were about to try, and no reason to, either; if it failed, hiding it just meant the world had less time to say goodbye to the shore we’d been building.

I want to tell you what Mu Chen did in the language he’d use himself, since he taught it to all of us in the Vale of Ash and every arc since — the whole of his craft in one sentence: you sit down beside a wound, you take a share of what it’s carrying, and you stay.

Except this time, he didn’t sit beside. That was the innovation, and it was terrifying, and it was why he’d gone very quiet all night preparing for it — he was going to sit inside.

I held the room. That’s my whole job, and I want to describe it clearly one more time because it’s the thing I’ve finally — after a hundred and thirty-five Chapters — learned to be good at. I threw myself wide, low, and deep; the unerasable floor under a healer descending into a wound bigger than any single soul. I didn’t go in myself, not once, not even wanting to, because a bright light reaching alone into a scar’s frightened dark is exactly the shape that has drowned every soul that ever tried it. Bai Qing held Mu Chen’s shape — refused to let the fear he was walking into fold him. Yun Shu read the fear from the outside, mapping it the way she reads a lullaby, so someone in the light knew what he was carrying and could pull him back if the shape started to bend the wrong way. Tao Tao held every hand the movement had — the whole world above singing not a name this time but a promise: whatever you take on down there, healer, you do not take it alone. Ji Lan told it, so the whole world was listening, so the dam would feel the whole vessel wrapped around Mu Chen even while it was frightened of it. And Xue Ningzhi, cold and precise and honest as ever, warned us — if the fear takes him, we lose more than a healer. We lose the man who taught the dam to hope in the first place. Do not lose him.

We did not lose him.

Mu Chen went down into the fear itself — not the dam’s ocean, but the dam’s dread. The specific new terror the Redactor had planted; the vivid image of the healed world drowning again, of every one of us going under because the dam had opened its hands too soon and mistaken its own tiredness for the vessel’s readiness. He walked into that dread the way a healer walks into a room where a mother is holding a dead child. Not to fix it. Not to make it not-so. Just to be present in it, so it wouldn’t be held alone.

I felt him find the dam inside the fear. I felt what he did next, because we were connected all the way down, and I will remember it always.

He didn’t say don’t be afraid. He didn’t say the fear is wrong. He didn’t say it won’t happen. Because the fear wasn’t wrong, and it might happen, and telling a scar not to be afraid of the exact thing it was made to prevent is the fastest way to lose it. Instead — and this is what breaks me even now, telling you — Mu Chen took a share of the fear itself. He held a piece of the vision of the healed world drowning, beside the dam, in his own heart, and he did not clench.

”I know,” he said, gently, in the dark. ”I know. I see it too. It’s a real fear. It is the exact fear I would feel, in your place, having held what you have held. And I am afraid with you. Look. I am afraid with you, and I am not clenching.”

The dam trembled, deep. I felt it through the floor.

”I might harm them,” it said, small. It wasn’t the old formal voice; it was the frightened one, and that was the door Mu Chen had been waiting for. ”I might drown the ones who came down to me. That is worse than holding forever. I would rather hold forever.”

”I know,” Mu Chen said. ”That is what a soul that has learned to love is afraid of. I meet that fear in every person I sit with. Every one. And here is the thing I tell them, and I am telling you now: you do not have to trust yourself to open. Not yet. Maybe not for a long time. You can trust the world that has been building beside you. You do not have to hold the readiness. We are holding the readiness. All you have to do is not clench. And when you feel the world is ready — not you, the world — you will feel it in us, not in yourself. We will show you. You will not have to decide alone. That was never your job.”

The dam made a sound I don’t have a word for.

”...You would tell me,” it said. ”When you were ready. You would tell me.”

”Every hour,” Mu Chen said. ”Every homecoming. Every star. You will feel the shore growing under us, and one day you will feel the shore is wide, and by then a hundred million voices will be telling you at once, and the knowing will not be yours to hold alone.” He was crying, down there, quietly, the way healers cry, without stopping the work. ”You have been alone with the deciding for ten thousand ages. Set that down. Just that. The deciding. Let us hold the deciding for you. You keep holding the ocean, as long as you need, and we will hold the when. That is the third door for you. Not opening, not clenching. Trusting the world to tell you.”

The dam did not open.

But it unclenched.

I felt it — the deep tired scar going from that shallow flinching cold back into the old deep still cold, back into the packed silence I’d come to love, back into the waiting that had been the whole shape of our tired glad season. Not further along than before the Redactor struck. Behind that, still. But not clenched. Not decided against. Just — held, again, in the old holding, with a healer beside it whose whole heart was a piece of its fear that had not gone under.

”Please stay,” the dam whispered.

”He’ll stay as long as you need him,” I said. ”He’ll come every day. That’s what he does. He is the best of us, and he is yours.”

The Scroll dinged, and I want to note that for the first time since it bonded to me, it didn’t ask permission. It just published, because some things don’t need to be asked about, and the world had earned this one long before Mu Chen ever went down.

DING. TIER ASCENSION LOGGED. Mu Chen — [LEGENDARY → MYTHIC]. New title: [He Who Sat Inside the Fear and Did Not Clench]. New title: [Healer of the Wounded Wall]. New title: [The Third Door for the Dark]. Talent. He is the boy you cut out of a manufactured legend in a tournament ring five years ago. A hollow child who did not know his own name. Today he walked into the frightened center of the oldest wound in creation, took a share of its terror onto his own heart, and did not flinch, and taught the tired keeper of the whole world’s ocean that fear can be held between two people. His is not the biggest light in the sky. It is the gentlest. I would like to note, for the record, that Storied to Legendary was a leap and Legendary to Mythic is a mountain, and he did it not by growing louder but by holding a share of the loudest fear there is. Belief: total. Sign-off: none required. The world already believed. Was this ascension helpful? Talent, I cannot even hear the question over how proud I am of him.

Mu Chen surfaced in my arms and didn’t speak for two hours. He just held on. Bai Qing had tears running quietly down her face without acknowledging them. Yun Shu was rubbing his back in slow circles, the mostly-unmentioned tenderness under her whole dry life. Ji Lan had already started telling the story down every thread of the movement — not the ascension, that would follow, but the thing itself, the healer going into a dark he had every right to fear and holding its fear as his own and coming back. The whole world was listening, and behind Ji Lan’s telling I could feel a hundred million small braced things across the movement quietly, quietly relaxing, because a healer had just proven that the frightened dark could be sat with even when the fright was very real.

And a thousand miles up the Homelight, which had cooled all night, warmed back up — slowly, carefully, the way a person warms back up after a long cold — because the dam had unclenched, and Su Yue felt it, and the shore was still coming.

The Redactor had struck for the one thing it had left, and it had pushed us back. I want to be honest about that. We had lost a season’s worth of the dam’s slow warming toward the door, and it would take a long time to earn again. Xue Ningzhi didn’t soften it that night at the fire — she said, cold and precise, that we had a new problem now, which is that the Redactor had proven it could reach the dam past all of us, and there was no reason to believe it wouldn’t try again, and this time the frightened thing would flinch faster because the pattern was learned. The war hadn’t been won today. It had only been not lost.

But we hadn’t lost it. And there had been, at the bottom of the world when it counted, a boy who once had no name of his own, sitting inside the oldest fear in creation, quietly refusing to leave.

Sometimes not losing a day is the whole of what a day can give you. And you carry it forward, you make the soup, and you go back down tomorrow.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. Mu Chen sat with a blanket around his shoulders and Bai Qing on one side and Tao Tao on the other, and he ate very slowly, and he didn’t say much, because a healer who has just held a share of the world’s oldest fear needs to be held by the family for a long quiet while before he can be a healer again.

Yun Shu tasted her soup, considered, and said, ”Regular onion. Adequately warm. Structurally sound. Best soup you have made this week, which is not saying much, but I have decided the family is going to be encouraging tonight, and I am doing my part under protest.”

”You hate being encouraging,” Tao Tao said, delighted.

”I hate it,” Yun Shu agreed. ”This is a great personal sacrifice. Do not tell anyone.”

Mu Chen laughed — small, hoarse, real — and it was the first sound out of him in an hour. I saw Bai Qing’s shoulders drop half an inch, and I saw Tao Tao lean her head against his. And across the fire the First Author sat, and she didn’t look hollow tonight either, because she had spent so long alone with her own fear of what she was carrying, and had just watched a boy she’d first known as a hollow Verse-Blade grow up into the man who taught the dark it didn’t have to be afraid alone — which was, in a way she wouldn’t put into words that night, everything she had ever quietly hoped might be possible in this book.

Ji Lan sat close to Mu Chen too. Not saying anything, just there. She had spent the day telling the world the story of what he did, and she had done it beautifully, with the gentleness that is her new register. She had a look on her face that I had seen on it more and more lately — a look of someone who has been shown, over and over now, that the people she loves keep doing things she didn’t know it was possible to do, and who is running out of ways to keep from being changed by it. She caught my eye once, and her mouth turned up small, and she went back to sitting close to Mu Chen and not saying anything. Some things she is still arriving at. In her own time. In her own way. I do not push.

And Lu — I want to note this, because it was small and I don’t want to overplay it — Lu, unforgiven, still doing the ark-copying at the far fire, came halfway across the camp and stood at the edge of ours. He didn’t say anything, because there was nothing he could say that wouldn’t have been an insult, and then he set down beside Mu Chen a bowl of Lu’s own soup — which is famously good, and was, therefore, a small and unlovely thing he could actually give — and he walked back to his fire. Tao Tao watched him go and didn’t soften. But she didn’t harden either. And Mu Chen ate the bowl.

Down at the bottom of the world, the dam held the ocean, tired and unclenched and afraid but no longer alone with the fear, waiting — the way we are all waiting now — for a shore that is still being built, one name and one soup and one held fear at a time.

The Redactor pushed us back this season, and we lost ground we had loved. But we are still here. The dam is still willing, even if it is frightened. Su Yue is still coming. And a boy we cut out of a manufactured legend five years ago is a Mythic power tonight because he taught the oldest wound in creation that the third door was open even to it.

We defend the dam tomorrow. Tonight, we hold a healer, and we eat the soup, and we wait for the Homelight to come all the way back up.

We have, after all, a whole world to bring home. And we have learned — the hard way, at cost — that no one is coming home who does not want to. Not even the dark.

Especially not the dark, whose wanting is now, at last, a real and tender thing, worth defending as fiercely as we defend anything else.
