Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We went back down in the morning. And the next morning. And the one after that.

I want to explain what going down actually means, because I have talked about the floor of the world a dozen times, but I do not think I have ever really treated it like a place. And it is a place. It is the realest place there is. Everything else is just built on top of it.

You go down past where names work. That is the only way I can say it. You start at the warm — our camp, the fires, the soup, the way-singers’ tents pitched in a circle because Nai’s people insisted on coming inland and would not be convinced otherwise — and you head down until the light thins. Then the names thin, too. The Scroll goes quiet, not because it’s broken, but because there is nothing left down there for it to track. No stars. No reach. No belief. You go down until you are under the whole ladder, under Nameless, under Erased, down to the blank space everything is written on. It is cold, it is quiet, and it is not empty.

It is the least empty place I have ever stood. It is packed. It is so full of what is being held that you can feel it pressing on your chest like deep water; standing in it, you understand why the word for the thing down there is just silence. It isn’t because nothing is there. It is because it is holding so much that it cannot make a sound. You go quiet under a heavy enough weight. Everyone does.

That is where we went, every morning. To keep it company.

I should be honest; saying we went to ’keep it company’ makes it sound a lot gentler than it really was. It was work. It was the hardest, coldest, least rewarding work we had ever done, and there were mornings I stood at the top of the descent with Granny Fen’s pot cooling on the stone behind me and just did not want to go. It is like when you do not want to go sit with a grief that refuses to get better no matter how long you stay. But we went. Yun Shu usually went first, mostly because she is braver than me about the things you cannot fix. And I went after her because I go where she goes.

We did not try to take the weight. I want that on the record, because it is the whole discipline of the thing. My job down there — the only job that was mine alone — was to hold the room. To be the floor under the floor. I kept the light thrown wide and low so that anyone who went down with me could move safely, could reach toward the cold without being lost in it, because I was the thing the dark could not put out, so I was the thing they could always find their way back to. I was the backstop. The night-light. The reason the descent was survivable at all.

I did not carry it. That was not my job, and the day I forgot that would be the day I died the way Su Yue died, the way the first world died — one bright light deciding it could hold the whole ocean alone. I held the space. The cloth carried the weight. That is the shape of everything we have ever gotten right, and down there, in the cold, it mattered more than anywhere else.

The warm — that night. Soup.

”You look terrible,” Tao Tao said, handing me a bowl.

”Thank you.”

”I mean it as concern. Sit.” She sat me down like I was one of her Rememberers and not the most powerful being that has ever lived, which is how she has treated me since she was a total gremlin superfan; it is one of the reasons I love her. ”You are going down for too long. Mu Chen says the ones who stay down too long start bringing the cold back up with them. It is in your face.”

She was right. It was. We all had it, just a little. You cannot sit at the bottom of the world with the oldest grief there is and come back up entirely warm; some of the cold just rides your coat. Mu Chen made it his entire study — how long a person could hold the weight before it started holding them, how to warm them back up, how to send the next person down before the last one drowned. He rotated us like a healer rationing watches. Nobody went down alone. Nobody stayed past their share. That was the craft of it, the carrying-craft, and he turned it into something almost like a science, and it was the only reason we could do this without losing ourselves the way the thing at the bottom had lost itself.

”Ji Lan wants you,” Tao Tao added. ”She has been trying to write it all day and she is in a mood.”

Ji Lan was by the far fire with a brush she wasn’t using and a face I knew well. For thirty years, she had been the most polished storyteller alive, and she had spent the whole day trying to find words for the thing at the floor of the world, failing, and hating every second of it.

”I cannot tell this story,” she said when I sat. Flat. Furious. ”I have told every story there is. I told the world its own dead were coming home and it believed me. But I cannot tell them this.” She threw the brush down. ”Because how do you tell people the monster under everything is the saddest person in the world? How do you make that stick? ’The dark that is eating your grandmother is only a grief that got too old’ — try singing that in a market square.” She laughed, wet. ”It is the truest story I have ever had, and it is the one I cannot tell, and I have never once in my life been this bad at the only thing I am good at.”

I did not have an answer for her. I told her so. She looked at me for a moment with something raw and off-balance in her face — the polish completely gone, just the artist underneath who had spent thirty years afraid of being forgotten and had found, this late, a thing worth being remembered for but could not find the words — and she said, quieter, ”You are the only person who has never needed me to be impressive.” She looked away fast, picked up her brush, and said, ”Go eat your soup, it is getting cold.” I let her have that, the way you let people have things. Some realizations are theirs to reach in their own time. I only saw the edge of it. I did not say anything. That is a kind of respect, too.

It was three mornings later that it went wrong.

We had been taking turns. That was the practice we built after the first crack — after the night the loneliest thing in the world felt a hand come to rest beside its own for the first time in history. You do not heal a grief by proving it wrong. You sit with it, and you take a share. Every morning we went down and we reached, together, the whole cloth of us, and we took a little of what it held, and we held it with it, so that for a few minutes it was not alone. Then we came back up before the cold rode us home.

But the shares had been small. Careful. Only the near edge of the weight.

That morning, I do not know exactly why — maybe because we had grown too sure, or maybe because the thing had loosened its grip a hair and let us in further than it meant to — we reached, and we grabbed something deeper. Not the near edge. The center. The thing at the very bottom of the weight, the oldest and heaviest part, the part it had never let anyone near.

The first drowning.

I need you to understand it was not what I thought. I had thought — we had all thought — that the first drowning was one great grief, a single terrible sadness, big but singular, something you could brace against. It is not. It is the first grief. It is the death of an entire world, every soul of the first age, all of them, all at once, the whole ocean of the first remembering with no shore and no one to share it — and we got hold of the center of it, and it came into us like the sea into a stove-in boat, and it was not sadness, it was drowning, the literal thing, the water closing over, and the whole cloth of us staggered under it at once.

Someone started to go under. I felt it — down the whole weave of us, a soul beginning to slip below the surface of a grief too old and too big for any living heart to hold. I still do not know whose it was, because the next thing happened faster than fault.

The Editor yanked the weight back.

All of it. In one motion. It tore the center of the drowning out of our hands and pulled it back into itself, hard, the way you snatch a child back from a ledge — and the cold slammed shut around it, and it clenched down over the whole ocean again, alone, and it said, into the ringing dark, the first thing it had said to us since the crack, and its voice was not seductive anymore and it was not gentle and it was not the voice that offers mercy in a market square. It was afraid.

”Let go,” it said. ”Let go, let go — you were drowning, I felt you drowning, let go of it—”

We came up out of the dark shaking, all of us, hauled up by the way-song and by the cloth catching its own and by me being the floor they could find; we sat at the top of the descent in the thin light gasping like people pulled out of a river, and down below us the loneliest thing in the world held its ocean alone again and would not, could not, be persuaded to let us near the center of it ever again.

Because I understood then. We all did. It came up out of the cold with us and it landed on every one of us at once, the real shape of the thing, the thing under the whole war, the thing I had been calling cruelty for a hundred Chapters and had never once had right.

It was never trying to take the world’s grief away because grief is weakness.

It was trying to take the world’s grief away because grief drowns you, and it knew, because it had drowned, because it was still drowning, and it had held the first ocean alone for an age precisely so that no one else would ever have to feel what it felt — and when it looked at a grieving world and offered forgetting, it was not offering contempt.

It was offering mercy. The realest mercy it knew. ’Let me take this. You saw what it does. I have carried it so you would not have to. Let me carry yours too. Let me spare you the water.’

The Scroll dinged, once, very quietly, up in the warm where it could count again, and what it said was small, and it did not have a like button on it.

DING. I have called it the silence. I have called it the dark, and the blank, and the thing that eats names. I have hated it for a thousand years, talent, and I was not wrong to, and I am not taking it back. But I did not know what the silence was for. It is a hand clamped over a wound so no one else has to see it bleed. It is a mother throwing herself over a fire. It has held the worst thing that ever happened so that the worst thing that ever happened would only ever happen to it. That is the cruelest thing in the world, and it is made entirely out of love, and I do not know what to do with that, and neither do you.

I sat in the thin light with the cold still on my coat and my people gasping around me, and I understood the hardest thing this whole strange book has ever asked me to understand.

You cannot argue a guard out of guarding you. You cannot talk a mother off a fire. The thing at the bottom of the world was not going to let go of its ocean because we asked nicely, or because we proved it wrong, or because we loved it — it was going to hold on harder the more it loved us back, because everyone who touched the weight started to drown, and it had watched us start to drown that morning, and now it knew for certain the thing it had always believed.

That the weight drowns whoever touches it.

That the only safe hands are its own.

That the merciful thing, the loving thing, the only thing, is to hold it alone forever and spare the whole world the water.

And I did not know how you answer that. I will tell you plainly, the way I always do. I sat at the top of the descent that night and I did not know how you tell the loneliest, most loving, most frightened thing in the world that it had the mercy exactly backward.

But I knew we had to. Because it was never going to let go while it believed it was saving us by holding on.
