Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We had learned to bring back the recently taken. Now we were looking for the ones long gone — and what we found under the world changed everything I thought I knew about the war.

For a hundred and twenty-six Chapters, I had understood our job as defense. Hold the line. Stop the dark from taking more. Even the homecoming of the nineteen, miraculous as it was, had felt like defense with a longer reach — just snatching back souls the enemy had only grabbed. But standing on the healed coast of Saltreach that spring, with the vessel wide, the armor standing, and nineteen families whole again, I looked out at a world that had been forgetting itself to death for an age. I thought: if we can bring back the ones taken last month, what about the ones taken a thousand years ago?

What about everything the dark ever took?

So we went looking. And the looking taught me the first strange thing: you cannot see an old wound until you have healed enough around it to feel the shape.

The terraces — where we found the hole.

It was Mu Chen who felt it first. He has spent this whole season with his hands on the weave, and he knows its shape the way you know your own house in the dark. We were building east, past the terraces, and he stopped — went still — and said, ”There’s a smoothness here. Feel it.”

And once he said it, I could. A place in the world where the weave went too smooth — no snag, no texture, no grief, no memory, just a flat blank stretch where a thing should have been. It wasn’t empty land; it was erased land. A hole in the world so old and so total that the world had healed flat over the top of it, the way skin heals flat over a wound so deep it takes the memory of the wound with it. There had been something there once — a town, a valley, a people, we couldn’t tell — and the dark had taken it so long ago that no one alive remembered it had ever been. There was no name. No grave. No story. No one grieving, because there was no one who knew to grieve. Just a smoothness that only a healed world could feel.

You cannot see the hole until you are whole enough around it. That is why no one had ever found the old erasures — the dying world was too full of holes to feel any single one. Only now, with a quarter of the world healed and remembering, could we stand at the edge of an ancient blank and feel its shape by the wholeness surrounding it.

”Can we bring it back?” Tao Tao asked, and there was a hunger in it, the founder of the dead can come home staring at a whole erased people.

And at first the answer looked like no. The nineteen were recoverable for one reason only: the Scroll had kept a copy. It had caught them as they went dark and held them in its ledger, an ark of nineteen names carried through the flood. But this? This was a thousand years before the Scroll ever bonded to a tired clerk who sneezed. There was no ledger. No ark. No copy. Nothing had caught these people on the way out.

Which meant, by everything we understood, they were gone. Truly, finally gone. Drained out of the world with no trace.

And then the First Author, who had been very quiet, said, ”No. They’re not gone. I know exactly where they are. I have known for a thousand years, and I have never once been able to bear thinking about it.” She told us the thing that broke the whole war open, and I have to tell it carefully, because it is the largest truth in this book and I don’t want to fumble it.

The dam believed it was draining the flood.

You remember. It told me so itself, at the bottom of the world — *every name that goes quiet is a little less water behind the dam; I have been trying to drain the flood the only way I know how, one forgotten thing at a time.* That was its whole strategy, its whole terrible mercy, the reasoning under ten thousand ages of forgetting: shrink the ocean by forgetting, name by name, until one day it might be small enough to set down.

It never worked.

That is what the First Author knew, and what we discovered when we went down toward the ocean to bring the old place home. The dam has never once made the ocean smaller. It can’t. Because forgetting doesn’t destroy a thing. It only moves it — out of the world’s remembering and down into the ocean the dam holds. Every name the dam has ever forgotten to lighten its load didn’t vanish. It sank. Straight into the flood behind the dam. The ocean didn’t shrink by one drop. It grew. Every single act of forgetting in the entire history of the dying world — every name the dark ate, every erasure, every drained memory the dam let go to spare itself — all of it went into the ocean. The ocean only ever got bigger, and the dam, believing with all its tired heart that it was draining the flood, had in fact been pouring the world into it, one forgotten thing at a time, for ten thousand ages.

Its whole life’s work was not just futile. It was the opposite of what it thought. The dam had been making its own burden heavier every day it tried to make it lighter.

I knelt at the top of the descent and understood the size of the tragedy, and I couldn’t speak. This is the loneliest, most tired thing in creation. It threw itself over the first flood before there were stars and held it back so the world could exist. And then, drowning under the weight, it tried the only thing it could think of to ease the load — it began to forget, gently, name by name, believing each one made the ocean a little smaller. And every one of those names sank into the ocean and made it larger, and it never knew, for ten thousand ages it never knew, that the mercy it was performing on the world and on itself was quietly crushing it worse with every act. It has been trying to save itself the only way it knew how, and that way was killing it, and no one ever told it, because no one ever knew, because it held it all alone.

But there is a mercy in the tragedy, and it is the whole hope of the rest of this book:

Nothing is truly gone.

Everything the dark ever took is still there. Held. In the ocean, at the bottom of the world, kept — unwillingly, unknowingly, at terrible cost — by the tired thing that thought it was destroying them. The dam is not the destroyer of everything the world forgot. It is the keeper of it. It has been holding safe, this entire age, every single thing the world ever lost, waiting — though it never knew it was waiting — for a world grown wide enough to take them all back.

The old erased place wasn’t gone. It was down there. Everything is down there. And now, at last, we had a vessel that could reach in and bring things home.

Getting the old place back was harder than the nineteen, and here is the difference — and it’s why the arks matter more than I had understood.

The nineteen were named. Catalogued. Held in the Scroll’s ledger, ready — you could reach in and find them in a moment, because someone had written them down. But the raw ocean is not a ledger. It is a thousand ages of everything forgotten, all at once, unnamed, lost in a vastness past imagining. Reaching into that and finding one specific erased place is like reaching into the whole sea to find one particular drop. Almost impossible.

Almost. Because the First Author is an ark.

That is what a thousand years of guilt made her, though she never called it that. She carries eleven thousand four hundred and six names — every soul she erased with her own hand for the Empire, held, alone, refusing to let herself forget a single one, because she believed she didn’t deserve the mercy of forgetting them. I had always thought of that as her wound. It is her wound. It is also the second great ark in all of creation — a named, indexed, perfectly-kept record of eleven thousand four hundred and six specific things the dark took, carried through a thousand years by the one person who would not let them sink nameless into the ocean with everything else.

And the old erased place we’d found — the smoothness in the terraces — was on her list.

She had erased it. Long ago. On the Empire’s orders. It had a name after all, in exactly one place in the universe: in her.

”It was the first,” she said, and her voice did a thing I had never heard from the apex power who writes the sky. ”The first one I was ever ordered to erase. Before I was the First Author. When I still believed. There was a storyteller there — a keeper, an old one, who refused to forget the things the Empire wanted forgotten, who kept the stories alive in a little valley and taught them to children and would not stop.” She closed her eyes. ”Yuhan. Their name was Yuhan. And I was sent to erase the valley so the stories would die with it, and I did it, and Yuhan was the first name I ever carried, the top of a list that grew to eleven thousand, and the erasing of Yuhan was the first crack in a faith that took a thousand years to finally break.” She opened her eyes. ”I have carried Yuhan at the top of my list for a thousand years. I know exactly where they are. Let me bring them home.”

So we did the thing.

The First Author reached — into her own thousand-year ark, down toward the ocean where the valley’s weight still sat, and she named Yuhan, and named the valley, and pulled. Mu Chen and the weave took the weight — set it on the vessel, the world ready this time to carry what the dam could not. Bai Qing held so nothing would slip. And I held the room. I didn’t reach in. I want to be clear, one more time, because the temptation is always there and it is always death: I didn’t reach into the ocean myself. One bright light reaching into that flood alone would drown the way Su Yue drowned, the way the first age drowned. I was the floor. The First Author reached, the vessel caught, and I made it safe for them to do it.

And Yuhan came home.

A valley filled back into the world — I watched the smoothness in the terraces suddenly have texture again, roads and terraced fields and the shape of a place that hadn’t existed for a thousand years, and in the middle of it, an old storyteller blinking in a world a thousand years past the one they’d left, the first person the Empire ever erased, home. And the First Author fell to her knees, because the top name on her list — the one she’d carried longest, the crack that started everything — was lifted off her, back into the world, alive, and for the first time in a thousand years her burden was eleven thousand four hundred and five.

The Scroll dinged, and I swear it was weeping.

DING. Reach: one valley, a thousand years gone. Belief: total. I have logged the most impossible thing yet. Talent — nothing is gone. Do you understand what I am telling you? NOTHING the dark ever took is gone. It is all still there. Every name. Every valley. Every drowned coast and lost soul and forgotten story since before the first story. The dam kept them. It thought it was destroying them and it was KEEPING them, all of it, all this time, safe in the dark, waiting. We are not fighting to stop the world from ending. We are fighting to bring the whole world HOME. Everything it ever lost. All of it. Someday, all at once. The First Author’s list is a rescue list now. And it is eleven thousand four hundred and five, and falling.

And I understood, kneeling in a valley that hadn’t existed that morning, what the ending actually is.

When the dam finally opens its hands — someday, when the vessel is wide enough — the ocean doesn’t just pour out to be caught. It comes home. Every drowned thing of the first age, every erased name of every age since, all of it, all at once, pouring not into oblivion but into a world at last big enough to receive them — a universal homecoming, the whole lost world brought back in a single tide. That is what the whole-sky moment is. Not a flood survived. A homecoming. The largest one there has ever been.

We are an ocean away from it. Yuhan was one name, and the First Author’s ark held it ready; the raw ocean of everything else is vast past dreaming and we can only take it a little at a time, no faster than the world can carry. But we know, now, what we’re building toward. Not a wall. A door. A way home for everything the dark ever kept.

There was only one problem, and I felt the edge of it that night, the way you feel a cold draft from a door you thought was shut.

All of this — all of it — depended on the arks. On the keepers. On the Scroll, and the First Author, and the far shore’s songs, and every named, indexed record that made a homecoming easy instead of impossible. The whole rescue rested on the handful of things in creation that had kept the lists.

And somewhere in the Empire’s cold root, the Redactor had just watched us bring a valley home from a thousand years gone.

And the Redactor is nothing if not a quick study.
