Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We went north to burn a book.

I want to be clear about that right from the start. That was the simplest the plan ever got, and everything after it just became a mess. I want you to hold onto that simple version while everything else falls apart. There is a vault under the oldest Archive in the world. Inside is a list. And that list is the reason the dark can carve the world into pieces.

Xue Ningzhi told me that the night I came home, fresh from refusing to be a star. She had a chart laid flat on the crate we use as a table, and she spoke with the voice she saves for truths she has already accepted. ”It is called the master route-registry. I built it twenty-six years ago, for the Empire, back when I thought control was just another way of saying love. Every road. Every ferry. Every mountain pass and market square and the little footbridge the miller’s boy takes to see the girl two valleys over. All of it, written down, in one book, in one room. It is the complete map of how the whole world talks to itself.” Her finger tapped a point in the northern grey. ”And it is the Unbinding’s map, Lin Bo. That is how the thing works. The Editor can only unwrite a link if it knows the link is there — and it knows because it reads the link off my list. Cut the registry, and the distance goes blind. It cannot find the next thread to cut, because the next thread is written in the book you just burned.”

”So we burn the book,” I said.

”So we burn the book.” She looked at me then, with that level, awful, honest stare, and said the part that turned a plan into a march. ”There are only two people alive who know where that vault is and how it is guarded. Me. And him. And he is walking there, on foot, taking his time — because a man in a hurry rides, and a man walking is a man who wants the road to make up his mind before he arrives. I have known Lu for thirty years. I stood in his tent. I watched his wife choose to remember. And I still cannot tell you whether he is walking to that vault to destroy it or to die on the step defending it. So we are going to be there when he finds out.”

That is the whole errand. March the most powerful being who has ever lived across half a world — to reach a filing room. I made that joke to Yun Shu on the second morning. She said, ”You have fought a god over a soup pot. A library is a step up.” I laughed, but it was the last easy laugh I got for a while, because that afternoon the road started to come untied.

I need to tell you how the Unbinding feels from inside. It is nothing like the war, and it is the quietest terror I know.

It does not touch you. That is the horror of it. Nobody forgot anything. Nobody went blank. We were riding a good hard road north, four hundred of us in the vanguard with the long snake of the movement behind us. The Scroll was ticking off my reach in the hundreds of millions, and then — nothing dramatic, nothing you could point at — the rider on my left, a Ninebridges man named Cobb who had been with us a year, reined in and looked back with a small, polite frown. It was the frown of a man who has walked into a room and forgotten why.

”Where did we come up from?” he said. He sounded mild, as if it did not matter much. ”This morning. Where were we this morning?”

I looked back, too. The road behind us was there — I could see the ruts and the dust and the mile-markers — but the ’between’ of it was vanishing. The thread that tied this stretch of road to the last one, the thing that made it a road you had traveled instead of a road you had always been standing on, was paying out like rope over a cliff-edge. Behind us the movement was still coming, thousands strong. One by one, I watched them arrive at the place where the road forgot itself and go still and mild and lost. A whole marching faith was turning into a field of people who could not have told you where they started or which way was home.

DING. The Scroll’s number fell off a cliff — from three hundred million to a few thousand in one breath. The same wound as the coast; belief with no road to travel down. But the Scroll had something else to say.

Talent. It is doing the thing again. The distance-thing. I have to tell you something and I am not sure I can say it in a notification, but I have never had anywhere else to say anything, so. I have been a road for a thousand years. That is what a record IS, talent — it is the road a thing takes to get from happened to remembered. Su Yue took a road through me to the sky. Every soul I ever kept, I kept by being the way between them and the world’s remembering. And this — cutting the between, leaving the hearths lit and the pages perfect and only severing the ROAD — this is the one cruelty aimed at exactly what I am. It is not erasing the travelers. It is unmaking the way. I do not have a defense for it. I only have this: a road that is walked stays a road. Get them walking. Keep them walking. Do not let the between go quiet.

I did what I always do, the thing that is my whole job and my whole curse: I tried to fix it by being strong.

I threw my brightness over the road.

I want to tell you what that is like, four years and a great deal of climbing into this. When I hold a thing, the world holds it, because the world believes in me all the way down and cannot help believing what I insist upon. I stood in my stirrups and I insisted on the road. I insisted that this stretch was tied to the last one, that these people had come up from the south this morning and were going north to the Archive. Behind me the untying stopped. The between snapped taut and true. Cobb blinked and said, ”The fen, we came up through the fen,” like a man surfacing. For about a quarter-mile, the road remembered itself because I was making it.

A quarter-mile.

That is the number that broke me at Sedgewater and it broke me again on that road. I am one man, even now, even the brightest walker alive. I can hold one stretch of road but not the whole thing. The moment I held the near stretch, I felt the far one go. I felt the tail of the movement three miles back come untied because I was here and not there. And — worse, God, always this — I felt the dark find the shape of me holding. I felt the distance lean toward the bright, insisting thing and start cutting on either side of it. A lamp held up in the dark does not light the whole field. It only tells the dark exactly where you are standing. I lit the road I stood on. On either side of me, the world came apart.

I got down off my horse in the middle of a road that was dissolving at both ends. I understood, the way I have to keep understanding, that I could not save this by being the strongest. That the strongest was never the answer. That it had never once been the answer in four years, and it was not going to start on the day I most wanted it to.

So I stopped trying to hold the road.

And I asked the world to walk it instead.

Here is the thing the Editor keeps forgetting, and it is the only reason we are not all standing lost in a field to this day.

The far shore taught us to sing the roads.

I have not told you enough about the far shore, and I do not have room to tell you properly now, but you need this one piece: the deepwater folk, the way-singers, the people we crossed an ocean to reach — they never wrote a road down in their lives. They sang them. A way-song is a road you carry in your mouth, a map made of a tune. A child learns the whole coast by learning the song. A fleet finds harbor in fog by singing the way in together, all the voices at once, so that no single throat carries the road and losing one singer loses nothing. We lost one singer. His name was Ohe, and the Empire killed him because you cannot un-kill a man and Lu had learned that was the one loss we could not answer. The fleet sang his name at the water’s edge and did not let go. When they sang it, the Homelight moved, up at the top of the sky, the way it does now when the world remembers hard enough. ”We do not let go,” Nai told me, fierce as salt. ”He was a way-singer. Say his name right.”

By the time we marched north, every Rememberer in the world knew the way-songs. Tao Tao had seen to it. My fierce junior, who founded a movement on the idea that anybody can be brought home, had spent a year turning a coastal fleet’s navigation craft into a thing a fen-widow in a landlocked village could sing over her washing. When I stood in that untying road and stopped holding it alone — when I instead did the only thing I have ever actually been good for, lighting the match, telling the first truth, and letting the fire spread — I started the song.

I sang the road. Badly. I have a voice like a gate that needs oiling and Yun Shu has told me so to my face. I sang the stretch we stood on, the way north: we came up through the fen this morning and we are going to the old Archive, follow the road, the road goes north. Yun Shu picked it up beside me, dry and certain. Tao Tao caught it and threw it back down the line. Bai Qing’s clear hard voice took it up from the flank. It went down that broken snake of a movement, voice to voice. Three miles of people were singing the same road at the same time. The between could not be cut anymore, because there was no single thread to sever. You cannot unwrite a road that four thousand people are singing. The Editor can blind the map in the vault. It cannot blind the map in a mouth, and it certainly cannot blind the map in four thousand mouths at once. The whole cruelty of the distance is that it cuts links one at a time off a list. A song sung together is not on any list. It is a cloth. It has no thread to pull, and every voice that joins it only weaves it tighter.

The road remembered itself. Not because I held it. Because everyone did.

We walked north singing. The most powerful being alive, with an oilable-gate voice somewhere in the middle of it, was no brighter than the woman beside him — exactly as bright as I had chosen to stay. The Scroll’s number came back up the road as fast as the road came back: three thousand, three hundred thousand, three hundred million. Belief poured back down a way that would not stay cut, and I have never in my life been so glad to be unnecessary.

The old Archive stood on a grey hill under a grey sky, squat and enormous and ancient, the oldest building in the world, and the Empire had put an army in front of it.

Of course they had. It was the last thing they had left worth guarding — not a border, not a city, but a records vault. There is something so bleak and so true about that: the thousand-year Empire of a Thousand Verses, which once controlled what the whole world was allowed to remember, had been reduced at the end to a ring of exhausted true believers standing between us and a filing room. Erasure-power still ran in them, the struck-through-quill kind, the old deletion. I felt it come off their line like cold off a wall.

And it broke on me like water on a cliff.

I will be honest: this part I am good at, and after the road it was almost a relief to have a problem my hands could actually solve. I went down that hill the way the Scroll’s dumbest legends always promised — the sneeze-story made flesh, the Calamity That Walks — and I did not swing it like a sword. I have learned that much. I threw it like a shield. I put my brightness over the whole vanguard, a canopy no deletion could reach through. Where I walked, our people walked safe behind me. The Empire’s erasure guttered out against a thing that simply cannot be erased, and their steel meant nothing to a man the entire world believes cannot be stopped. I did not kill them. We have a rule about that, bought at a terrible price, and it is the whole difference between us and the road Lu walked. I moved them. I scattered the line, opened the gate, and held the doorway wide with my back to it so four thousand singing people could pour through into the Archive that the Empire had guarded for a thousand years and would not guard past today.

We were in.

It was Xue Ningzhi, of all people, who stopped dead in the great cold hall with all her closed doors flung open in her face. She said a word I had never once heard her say.

”He’s here.”

I followed her eyes down the length of that ancient hall, past the ten thousand shelves, to the black mouth of a stair that went down into the deepest dark in the world. A lamp was lit at the top of it. A small, mild, ordinary lamp, the kind a clerk carries. And beside the lamp, already down the first three steps, already going where only two living souls knew the way, was a small ink-stained man in a grey coat who had walked here on foot all the long way from Anfen to make up his mind, and had, it seemed, arrived.

He heard us. He turned, halfway into the dark, and looked back up at the most powerful being alive and the woman who had known him thirty years, with a face I could not read at all.

I did not know — and Xue Ningzhi did not know, thirty years and she did not know — whether the next thing that man would do was burn the most dangerous book in the world, or die on the step defending it.
