Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We had the whole night, but honestly, for most of it, we had nothing.

Force was out of the question; you can’t really wrestle a soul that’s already busy unwriting itself, and the second we touched it, the whole thing would just finish. Argument was out too; it had listened to everything we said, agreed with a bunch of it, and kept right on going, which is honestly the scariest kind of listener you can find. Then there was the third door — our big answer for everything, the thing we’d opened for grieving fathers and tired archivists and the oldest dark in the world — but we offered that too, and it just looked at the door and shook its head.

It was Yun Shu who found the line, somewhere around the middle of the night, sitting there with her cold tea and that focused face she gets when she’s fact-checking something.

”We’re fighting about the wrong thing,” she said. ”We’ve been trying to talk it out of dying, but that’s not really our call. If it wants to stop, that’s its memory, its soul, its choice, and Hua taught us what it costs to respect that — and we respect it anyway.” She looked up at us. ”But the list isn’t its memory. Those are eight million other people. Their names aren’t its property, and they never were — not tonight, and not the night it took them, either. It can consent for itself, sure, but it can’t consent for them.”

And there it was — the same idea we’d built the whole ark-copying project on, back when the Redactor first came for the First Author: no single soul is allowed to hold the fates of all the others. We’d scattered the First Author’s eleven thousand into a thousand different keepers for that exact reason, so that no one heart failing could take everyone else down with it. We just never imagined the heart in question would end up being the enemy’s.

”You can go,” I told it, around the third hour. ”I hate it, but you’re free to go; nobody here is going to lay a finger on you. Just leave the names. They aren’t yours to take with you, and they never were. Give them back, then do whatever you need to do.”

”And why,” it asked, not even being mean about it, ”would I do that? Handing you the list is basically handing you the proof of what I am. You’re asking me to write out my own indictment before I leave.”

”Yes,” Lu said.

He walked out of the shadows and sat down on the log right next to the thing that had made him. I want to be clear about this — nobody asked him to do it, and he sat down with the face of a man walking straight into a fire.

”I’m not going to forgive you,” Lu said. ”I want that out there first, because everything after this is worthless if you think I’m here to give you that. I can’t forgive you. I signed two million, four hundred and eleven thousand, six hundred and nine of my own, and I’m not forgiven — the girl at that fire hasn’t forgiven me, and she’s right not to, and I hope she never does. That’s not on the table. Not from her, not from me, not from any of them.”

”Then you have nothing to say to me,” the Redactor replied.

”I have the only thing anyone ever had to say to me,” Lu answered. ”Teacher — listen. I walked north with a torch to burn the registry because I’d finally worked out what I was, and I thought burning it was the one clean act I had left. But a woman I’d wronged stopped me on a black stair and told me the truth: that destroying it would’ve just finished the dark’s work for it.” He was shaking, but he kept going. ”And what I found out later — over years of it, at the far fire, unforgiven, doing the copying — is the thing I came to tell you. A man who was wrong can still be useful. That’s all. That’s the entire third door. It isn’t absolution, it isn’t peace, and it isn’t being told the graves weren’t yours. It’s just being allowed to carry every one of them for the rest of your life while your hands actually do something about it. And it isn’t nothing.” His voice broke. ”Teacher, it isn’t nothing. I’ve had years of not-nothing, and I didn’t deserve a single hour of it, but I’m still here.”

”Your list,” Mu Chen said quietly, coming around from the other side — he’d moved while Lu was talking, just like he always does, kneeling down like he was checking on a patient. ”You called it your indictment. It isn’t. Ask her.” He nodded toward the First Author, who hadn’t moved all night. ”She carried eleven thousand four hundred and six names for a thousand years as a sentence she passed on herself. The names never changed. What changed was that one day, they became a manifest — the exact map of every door she gets to open. Same list, same guilt, and every one of those souls is still hers to answer for. But now it’s pointed at a door instead of a grave.” He held the Redactor’s eyes. ”You don’t get to not-feel it. That’s not on offer either. You carry it as a scar that aches for the rest of your life. But eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine isn’t the count of what you destroyed. Nothing was destroyed — the dam kept every one of them. It’s the count of what you can bring home. You’re the only creature alive who can. That’s a horrifying gift, but it’s yours, and nobody else’s.”

The Redactor sat there with its ink-stained hands in its lap for a really long time.

Then it finally said, ”...Fetch your writers.”

It took two days.

I won’t lie; it wasn’t some grand, cinematic event. It was the least dramatic, yet massive, thing I’ve ever seen. An old clerk sat on a log by a cook-fire, listing names in a flat, tired voice for two days and the nights between them, only stopping when its throat gave out — and the world started writing. The Scroll logged. The First Author copied them down by hand. Ji Lan’s keepers took them in relays, singing them into the chorus so no single heart had to carry them all and no single stroke could erase them again. Tao Tao managed the relay lines. Rin and Yuhan and old Wen sat in the dirt with wax boards. Eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine names went out of one tired head and into ten thousand hearts and a hundred million mouths, and the raw ocean’s darkest region became, over two days, a rescue manifest.

It said the last one just before dawn on the third day. Then it sat quietly, its hands empty.

”It’s done,” it said. ”They are yours. Go get them; you’ll find them right where I put them.” A pause. ”Some of them will say no. You know that. Some will look at the world and choose the quiet, and you’ll have to let them, and it will hurt you, and I’m not sorry, because that’s the part of my thesis that was true.”

”We know,” I said. ”We’ve had practice.”

”Yes.” It stood up, slowly, the way the very old do. ”Then I would like to go now, please.”

And there it was — the hardest thing anyone has ever asked me for.

I want to be honest that I fought it. I repeated everything Lu had said and everything Mu Chen had said, badly, because I wanted so much for the story to end the other way. I told it about Lu at the far fire. I told it about Mei in her garden, and the Warden who chose her quiet and was honored, and the dark at the bottom of the world that had been the most hated thing in creation and was now being sung to sleep every night by the people it had wronged. I said, there is a version of this where you stay and it is very hard and it is not nothing.

And the keeper of the blank page listened to all of it, and didn’t sneer, and said: ”I know. I believe you. I am simply too late, and too tired, and I do not want the world I would have to live in — not because it is a bad world. Because it is a good one, and I would have to look at it every day and know I nearly cost it everything. Lu is younger than me by eight centuries and he can carry that. I cannot. I have looked at the door you opened. It is a real door and it is a kind one and I am declining it, freely, awake, in the full light, with the whole truth in front of me.” A very small, very dry expression. ”Which I believe is the exact standard your movement requires.”

It was.

And Hua taught us, way back in the fen country, that if the choosing isn’t free when it goes the way you hate, then it was never free at all.

So I said the hardest yes of my life. ”All right,” I said. ”Go, then. Nobody will stop you.”

But there was one thing left, and it came to me only because it was my own oldest wound, the one I’ve carried since I was a nobody clerk nobody could be bothered to remember.

”Wait,” I said. ”What’s your name?”

It stopped.

”...I am the Redactor,” it said.

”That’s a job,” I said. ”I had one of those. Mine was ’Bureau of Minor Corrections, third desk,’ and for years that was the only thing anybody called me, and I want you to know it nearly killed me, and the thing I wanted most in the whole world back then — before the legends, before any of it — was for one person to remember that I had an actual name.” I stood up. ”You’ve spent nine hundred years taking names. I’m not letting you go into the dark without saying your own. What is it?”

The oldest and coldest thing the Empire ever made stood in the grey light before dawn with its hands empty and its list given away, and it took a long time to answer, and when it did, its voice wasn’t old at all. It was about nineteen.

”...Ping,” it said. ”My mother called me Ping. It means level. Flat. Smooth.” A terrible small laugh. ”She meant calm. She meant a calm child. I have thought about that a great deal, over the centuries, given what I chose to do with it.”

”Ping,” I said, and beside me the Scroll dinged, soft and gold, without being asked, because some things don’t need asking.

DING. Name recovered: Ping. Spoken aloud once, at dawn, by the man who used to be a desk. Talent — I have logged eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and ten names this week. Eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine of them are coming home. And one of them is walking into the dark of their own free will, having handed back every single hostage first, which is not redemption and I will not call it redemption. But I am the record, and the record will say that at the very end the keeper of the blank page gave back everything it had taken and asked only for the mercy it spent nine hundred years telling other people to want. Let the world decide what that is worth. I am too tired to decide tonight. 👍

”We’ll keep your name,” I said. ”That’s not a threat. It’s just what we do now. You’ll be in the ocean with everybody else, and when the dam opens its hands, you’ll be offered — the same as every soul down there, no more and no less, and nobody will drag you and nobody will force you. If you want to come home then, we’ll come and get you. If you don’t, we’ll let you be, and we’ll still say your name once a year, because that’s the rule and the rule doesn’t have exceptions for people we’re angry at.” I found my throat had gone tight. ”That’s the whole of it, Ping. The door doesn’t close behind you. That’s the only thing about us that ever really mattered.”

Ping looked at me for a long moment with an expression I have thought about every day since.

”...That,” it said, ”is a very annoying way to win an argument.”

And then it went, quietly, the way a lamp goes out, and the space where it had been was smooth, and the log by the pot was empty except for a bowl of bad soup that had gone cold.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. Nobody said much for a while.

The manifest sat on the table between us: eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine names, indexed, scattered, sung, un-take-able. Xue Ningzhi ran the arithmetic three times and then put her pen down and said, in a very odd voice, that the homecoming had just gotten roughly eight hundred times larger and roughly the same amount more possible, and that she did not have a word for what had happened at our fire this week and would be obliged if nobody asked her to find one.

Tao Tao sat next to Lu. Not across from him. Next to. She still did not say she forgave him — she has not, and she is right not to, and she will tell you so. But she sat next to him, and after a while she said, ”That was the bravest thing I’ve ever watched anybody do, and I hated every second of it, and you’re still not forgiven,” and Lu said, ”I know,” and she said, ”Good,” and passed him the bread.

Down at the bottom of the world, the dam felt eight million and some souls become findable in a single week, and was quiet a long time, and then said, wondering: ”They were the worst of what I hold. The ones with no name and no ache and nobody left to want them. I have carried them the longest and I thought they were the ones I would have to keep forever.” A pause, ten thousand ages deep. ”The one who made them nameless gave the names back. That is — I do not have a word. The count is shorter tonight. Tell the world the count is much shorter tonight.”

And Yun Shu tasted the soup and said, ”It’s fine,” and then, after a moment, ”He was right, you know. It’s genuinely poor soup. He came here to die and he still took the time to review it. I’ve decided I respect that.”

”You would,” I said.

”I would.” She leaned on me. ”Eight million people, Lin Bo. He gave back eight million people and then asked to be let go and we let him, because we’re the sort of idiots who keep our promises to the people we like least.” She was quiet. ”We’d have been a worse thing if we hadn’t. I’ve checked. I checked all night.”

We have a whole world to bring home, and the list just got longer than any of us dreamed, and the last enemy who could still be argued with sat at our fire and gave back everything it stole and walked into the dark on its own two feet with its name said aloud once, at dawn, by a man who used to be a desk.

There is nothing left in front of us now but the shore, and the countdown, and the tired old dark at the bottom of the world holding a door it is nearly ready to open.

Sleep warm, Lantern. It’s much shorter tonight.
