Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We climbed down into the dark after him. Nobody spoke. There was nothing to say that wouldn’t make it real.

I’ve been in deep places during this war. The top of the sky. The bottom of a fen where a whole town had forgotten itself. But this vault under the old Archive? It was the quietest place I’d ever been. Going down, I realized the silence was the whole point. It was the closest thing to the Editor’s own country — a room made to hold the written bones of how the world connects. And that silence wasn’t empty. It was waiting. Patient, gentle, and old.

The registry sat on a stone table in the center. One book. It was huge, the kind of thing that takes two men to move, and it was open. Lu stood over it with his clerk’s lamp. In his other hand, unlit and hanging at his side like a choice he hadn’t made yet, was a torch.

So. That settled part of it.

”Hello, Ningzhi,” he said, not turning. His voice was small, dry, and tired. The voice of a man who works eleven-hour days in a records room. Which is exactly what he is. Always was. ”You built this. I always thought you would be the one to come.”

”I am the one who came,” she agreed. She had stopped a few feet away. Her hands were still. I have known her long enough to know that when her hands go still, she is terrified. ”Lu. What are you going to do with that torch?”

”I don’t know yet.” He said it simply. I believed him. ”I’ve been walking three weeks to find out. I got all the way to the step, and I still don’t know.” He looked down at the open book. Miles and miles of the world’s connections, written in his own careful hand and hers. Thirty years of work. ”I can end it, you know. The distance. Right here. It reads the world off these pages — every road it has cut, it cut because I listed the road for it twenty-six years ago, when I thought a map was a way to keep things safe.” He gave a small, terrible laugh. ”I built the Unbinding’s eyes. I can put them out. One torch, and the dark goes blind. It never cuts another thread as long as the world lasts, because the list of threads is ash. That is the good thing I came here to do. The one clean good thing, at the end of a life that added up wrong.”

I felt the whole team lean toward him. Because God, it was right there. The win. The thing we marched north to do. And the enemy was going to do it for us.

”Don’t,” said Xue Ningzhi.

I turned and stared at her. Everyone did.

”Ningzhi—” I started.

”Do not let him burn it.” She wasn’t looking at me. She was looking at Lu. Her voice was strange and strained. The voice of a woman doing the hardest math of her life and hating the answer. ”Lu. Wait. Think. You are a man who counts. Count this one.” She took a step toward the table. ”What is burning the registry? Say what it actually is. It is cutting every link in the world at once. Permanently. So no one can ever read them again. You want to blind the dark by making sure the map of how the world connects is gone.” She was close to him now. ”That is not stopping the Unbinding, Lu. That is the Unbinding. That is the exact thing it does — sever the between, leave the hearths, take the road. You would be doing its whole life’s work for it, in one strike of a match, and calling it a victory.”

The vault went very still.

And I understood, standing there in the dark, that she was right. I had almost cheered for the trap again, like I always do. Burning the book was the sword answer. And I of all people should have known: the sword answer is always the one the dark is happy to let you take. The Editor didn’t care who held the torch. Read the roads off the list to cut them one by one, or burn the list so no one remembers them at all — silence wins either way. A world that has lost the map of itself is already half-Unbound. It doesn’t matter if the dark did it, or if we did it in the dark’s own house, using the dark’s own logic.

”Then what?” said Lu. He finally turned around. His tired face looked raw. It was the face of a man who had been walking for three weeks toward a torch because he couldn’t stand being the man who was always too late with the wrong cut. ”Then what, Ningzhi? It is a weapon. You said so yourself; you built it as a weapon. You cannot leave a loaded thing like this sitting in a room for the dark to keep reading. You cannot burn it and you cannot keep it. What is the third—”

He stopped.

Because he had heard himself.

I watched it land on him the way Anfen had. The way the whole book keeps landing on everyone. The slow, terrible dawn of a man realizing there was a door in the wall the whole time — a door he had been too early, or too scared, or too certain to see.

”The third door,” I said. Quietly. It was the first thing I had said in the vault. I hadn’t planned to say it, but someone had to be the mouth. ”You don’t amputate the wound, and you don’t leave it bleeding. You carry it.” I stepped up to the stone table. To the greatest book in the world. Thirty years of every road that ties every soul to every other soul. ”This isn’t a weapon, Lu. It only became one because it was a secret. A map of the whole world’s connections, locked in a vault where one dark thing gets to read it alone — of course that’s a weapon. But a map of every road in the world, in everyone’s hands, sung in every mouth, remembered by the whole movement at once—” and I felt it building in me, the way the good, true things do, the match catching, ”—that is not a weapon. That is the opposite of a weapon. That is a world that knows its own between so well the dark can never cut a single thread in secret again, because there is no secret left. You cannot Unbind a road a thousand people can still name. We proved it on the way here. We sang one road and the dark could not cut it.” I put my hand flat on the open page. ”So we don’t burn the map. We don’t hide the map. We copy it. All of it. And we give it away — to every town, every fleet, every fen-widow with a washboard — until the entire world is carrying the map of itself. Until the between of everything is as unerasable as I am, for the exact same reason: because everybody knows it, and everybody holds it, and there is no seam left to pull.”

Nobody moved.

Then Tao Tao, from the dark behind me, said in a small, awed voice, ”...that is the biggest way-song there has ever been.” And she started, God love her, to hum the road we had walked in on. It echoed off the ancient stone, and I have never heard anything less patient with silence in my life.

The Editor came then. Of course it did. It had let us walk into its quiet country, and it had let us find the answer, because it isn’t afraid of answers. It is only afraid of a world. It made its move the second the answer became a plan.

It went for the vault itself.

I felt the between start to pay out under our feet. The stair behind us untying. The Archive coming loose from the world. The whole building, gently, lovingly severed from every road that led to it — so we would be sealed in the deepest dark with the map we hadn’t copied yet. Marooned. Present and whole and utterly cut off. A lamp in a sealed room. I am not the dark, it had told me once, mild as ever. I am the distance. And it put every mile it had between us and the light.

And I did not try to hold it alone.

That is the whole of what I’ve learned, and the whole of how we won the vault. Let me say it clean. I stood at the bottom of that stair and threw my brightness up it like a shield. Not to seal the dark out — I can’t seal the dark out, no one can, it is the floor under everything — but to hold one line. One lit stretch of stair. Long enough.

Up top, in the great hall, four thousand Rememberers who had poured in past a broken Empire did the thing they had crossed an ocean and a war to learn. They sang the road down. They sang the way into the vault, all of them at once, a way-song aimed straight down a dark stair, keeping the between of that one descent alive by main force of a whole movement’s remembering — faster than the distance could cut it. And down that road they had sung open came a hundred hands. Xue Ningzhi’s clerks. Ji Lan, with her reach turned at last to the truest broadcast of her life. Paper, and ink. They copied the greatest book in the world by lamplight while the dark tried to take the room, and every page they finished they handed up the singing stair and out into the world. One road. One link. One between at a time. Until the map of everything stopped being a thing locked in one vault, and became a thing the whole waking world was learning by heart.

You cannot Unbind a vault that four thousand people are singing a road into.

The distance guttered. The stair held. The map got out.

And the Scroll — which had been silent the whole way down, a record and a road and a thousand-year-old keeper of the ways — dinged once, softly. Its reach was climbing off the page, past where it had ever been, because a world learning every road at once is a world that can carry a story everywhere. All roads open. Nothing cut.

DING. New Legend published. Reach: every road there is. Talent. Do you understand what you have just done. I do not think you do, so I am going to tell you, and I am going to try not to make it strange. For a thousand years I was the only road. The one way between happened and remembered. That is why losing me was the end of the world, and it is why the dark could always find me — one road is one thing to cut. You just made the whole world a road. Every soul a way between every other soul. There is no single thread left to sever, because it is all thread now, all of it, everywhere, a cloth with no edge. This is the thing Su Yue was trying to build and never could, because they tried to be the brightest single light, and I let them, and I lost them. You gave the sky its map back. The Homelight is the brightest it has ever been. Not because you outshone it. Because you finally gave it somewhere to reach.

I looked up later, when we came out of the Archive into the grey day, and even by daylight you could see it. The Homelight. Su Yue’s star, the fixed and lonely one at the top of the sky that I had refused to join — burning now like it had a whole world reaching up toward it, instead of one grieving scroll and an old woman’s guilt. Not saved. Not home. But no longer alone at the top of the dark. Given, at last, some company on the long road down.

Lu did not burn the registry. He did not defend it, either. In the end, he did the strangest thing. The thing I keep turning over. The thing I think is the truest end his story could have.

He helped copy it.

He knew that book better than anyone — every road, every hand, every correction in thirty years of margins. When the copying started, he set down the unlit torch and picked up a pen. He worked the whole night at the stone table, the fastest and surest scribe in that vault: the man who built the Unbinding’s eyes, now teaching the world to see the map for itself, so the dark could never read it alone again. A man who counts, finally putting his counting to the one use that was not a wound. I don’t think it redeemed him. I don’t think he thinks so either. Thirty-one years and two million four hundred thousand people don’t come off a column because you had one good night with a pen. But it was the one clean good thing, at the end of a life that added up wrong. He did it. It was real. And I will not take it from him.

Xue Ningzhi sat with him while he worked. Her dark mirror. The believer who broke, keeping company with the believer who hardened, at the bottom of a vault, copying out the between of the whole world by lamplight. Neither of them said much. Near dawn I heard her say, once, very low: ”You were too early, Lu. That is all it ever was. Too early, not too late.” And I heard him not answer for a long time. Then he said, in a voice I had never heard from him, small and cracked all the way through, ”I know. I worked it out at her gate. It is the worst thing I have ever known.” And that was all. That was the whole reckoning. It is not enough. It is never enough. But it is true, and I have promised you nothing but true.

When it was done — when the map of everything was out in the world and could never be locked in one dark room again — Lu set down the pen. He stood. He put on his grey coat. And he walked up out of the vault, and out of the Archive, and off into the north, on foot, taking his time. Nobody stopped him. Where does a man go, after that? I don’t know. Xue Ningzhi watched him to the top of the hill and past it, and when I came to stand beside her she said, without looking at me, ”I still do not know if he will ever come back to us. I have stopped needing to know.” Which, from Xue Ningzhi, is basically a whole book of forgiveness.

The Empire’s ring had scattered. The oldest building in the world stood open — its ten thousand shelves ours to read, its one deadly secret spent and given away. We had marched north to burn a book. Instead we had handed the whole world the map of itself. And the Unbinding — the distance, the cruelest thing the dark ever made — had lost the one thing it needed to work: to be the only one who knew the way.

It is not over. I want to be clear about that, the way I always am. The Editor is not beaten. You cannot beat the floor under the world by taking one weapon off it. It is still down there, patient and gentle and old, and it will find another cruelty, because that is what silence does. But it will not cut the world into pieces in the dark anymore. We took its eyes and gave them to everyone. And a world that knows every road it is made of, and sings them, and carries them, and hands them to strangers by lamplight, is a world one enormous step closer to the only thing that ever wins this: every soul, all at once, remembering together.

We came out into the grey morning — four thousand of us and one map of everything, singing.

Yun Shu found my hand. ”You did not burn it,” she said. ”Good.”

”Xue Ningzhi saw it. I almost cheered for the torch.”

”You always almost cheer for the torch,” she said. ”It is why you need the rest of us. Do try to keep up.” And she leaned her head on my shoulder — the brightest walker alive made no brighter than the woman beside him, exactly as reachable as I chose to stay — and we walked north out of the oldest dark in the world in the loudest small crowd you ever heard.

Somewhere ahead of us, an old man walked alone, carrying a wound no torch could burn out.

Behind us, above us, the Homelight reached down a thousand-year road toward a whole world that had finally, finally started reaching back.

And the between of everything, from the deepwater coast to the miller’s boy’s footbridge, was — for the first time since the first story — too well known, too well loved, and far, far too loud, to ever be quietly cut again.
