Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We had beaten every argument the dark had left. I should have known that a thing with no arguments left doesn’t stop. It just stops arguing.

The season after the letters began was the gentlest we’d ever had. Every night the Scroll wrote to the Lantern and the world wrote with it; every night the dam told us the true horizon, this close, this much longer, I can feel it; and every night the countdown got a little shorter and the ember at the top of the sky healed a little more. People had begun, cautiously, to talk about the homecoming as a thing with a date — not a someday, but a season, a near one. Tao Tao had started arguing with the dam about the count out of pure habit. Yun Shu had begun, without telling anyone, sewing something.

And then, at dusk on an ordinary evening, with the cook-fires going and the first letters of the night being drafted, someone walked up the road into our camp.

Not an army. Not a strike. Not a whisper out of the cold.

One person. Old. Alone. On foot.

They were, I want to be exact about this, the most ordinary-looking soul I have ever seen. A small tired figure in a grey travelling coat, with ink on the fingers and the particular stoop of someone who has spent a long career bent over a desk. If I’d passed them on a road I would have thought clerk, and I would have thought it fondly, because I used to be one.

Xue Ningzhi stood up so fast her bowl broke on the ground.

And at the far fire, Lu — who hasn’t raised his voice once since the day he laid down the torch — went absolutely white, stood up, and said, in a voice I had never heard from him: ”Teacher.”

So that is how the Redactor finally came to us: walking, unarmed, at suppertime, and sitting down on the log we keep by the pot as though it had been invited.

”I have not come to fight you,” it said. Its voice was the voice from the whispers, but smaller out loud, and older, and unbearably tired. ”I would lose. I have lost every time I tried, and I have been counting, and I am not a stupid creature. I have come to tell you what I am going to do. You have earned an explanation. Nobody in a thousand years has earned one before.”

”Then have some soup first,” I said, because I didn’t know what else to say, and because Granny Fen taught me that you feed whoever sits at your fire and sort the rest out after.

It looked at the bowl for a long moment with an expression I couldn’t read at all.

”...You are exactly as they describe you,” it said. ”That is going to make this harder. Very well.” It took the bowl. It didn’t drink. ”Do you know what I am? Not the name your friends use. What I am.”

”The Empire’s root,” said Xue Ningzhi. Her voice was steady, but her hands weren’t. ”The oldest authority on erasure. The keeper of the blank page. You wrote the first order. Everything Lu and I ever did, we did downstream of you.”

”That is the job,” it agreed. ”It is not the thing.” It set the bowl down carefully on the log. ”The thing is this, and I want the storyteller to hear it, because she will have to tell it after.” It looked at Ji Lan, who had gone very still. ”A bureaucracy does not truly keep its records in a vault. Vaults burn. Vaults get copied and scattered by clever girls with fen accents. A bureaucracy keeps its true records in the head of the one who signs, because the one who signs is the only one who is never allowed to forget what was signed.” Its ink-stained hands folded in its lap. ”I authorized every erasure the Empire of a Thousand Verses performed for nine hundred and eleven years. Every single one. And I did not permit myself the mercy of forgetting a single name, because I believed — I still believe — that if you are going to do a terrible necessary thing, you must at least have the spine to know exactly what you did.”

The fire went very quiet. Yun Shu, who reads the shape of records the way other people read faces, had gone grey.

”Oh,” she said softly. ”Oh, no.”

”Yes,” said the Redactor. ”You have worked it out. Say it, so the others have it.”

Yun Shu looked at me, and I haven’t often seen her frightened, but she was frightened. ”It’s an ark,” she said. ”Lin Bo — it’s an ark. The biggest one that has ever existed except the dam itself. Every soul the Empire ever unwrote, named and indexed and carried, in one head, for nine hundred years.”

”Eight million, six hundred and forty thousand, and nine,” said the Redactor. ”As of this evening. I am aware of the number the way you are aware of your own hands.”

I want to say what happened in me when I heard that, because it wasn’t what I expected.

For one massive, thumping heartbeat, I actually felt hope. Because eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine souls, all named? That is not just a tragedy — it is a manifest. It is a rescue list that makes everything we have gathered in all our years look like nothing. The First Author’s eleven thousand took us an entire season of joy to sort through. This was like the raw ocean’s worst region suddenly getting indexed, handed to us in one tired, old head — the difference between trying to grab a single drop in a sea and reaching for eight million people we could call by name.

I actually started to smile. I am not proud of it. It lasted about as long as it took the Redactor to spot it.

”Yes,” it said, soft. ”That is why I came. I am going to unwrite myself. Tonight, before dawn. And the list goes with me.”

The fire made a sound — just a bunch of people making the same small, choked noise at once.

”You cannot stop me,” it continued, in the flat voice of someone reading off a schedule. ”You cannot fight something that is erasing itself; there is simply nothing to hold. You cannot out-argue me; I have heard all your points and several are right, yet it has not changed what I am going to do. And you will not force me. The whole point of your movement is that no soul is ever forced, and I have watched you honor that rule at costs that genuinely surprised me. You let a woman in Ninebridge set down her three children and walk away; you carried her name out and never stopped her. I watched.” Something flickered in that tired face. ”You are the only people in the history of the world who would let me go. That is exactly why I came here.”

”Why,” said Bai Qing. Just the one word, level, the way she asks the questions that actually matter.

And it told us. I am going to write it down fairly, because we have a rule in this family about giving the other side its full weight — and this was the heaviest thing anyone has ever said at our fire.

”Two reasons, the small one first,” it said. ”I still believe forgetting is mercy. You have not moved me there. You showed me a world that can carry more than I thought possible, and I have adjusted my estimate, but it is still my judgment that most of those eight million would be kinder left where they are than dragged into a world that will look at them and only see what was done to them. Taking the list is not spite. In my arithmetic, it is the last mercy I can give. I would rather give a mercy you call a crime than withhold it just so you would applaud me.”

”And the large one,” said Lu, from the dark at the edge of the firelight. It was not a question. He knew.

The Redactor looked at him — at the student who had walked north and laid down a torch — and for the first time, its voice cracked, just a little, the way old paper tears.

”The large one is that I cannot survive being wrong,” it said. ”Do you understand the size of that? If your homecoming works — if the world truly can hold them all — then I was not an administrator of a hard necessity. I was the author of the largest crime that has ever been committed, eight million counts of it, all signed in my hand. Every one was avoidable, and I simply did not know how to build what you built, and I did not try, because I was certain.” It stopped. Its hands were shaking now. ”Every night you write your letter to that star, you prove it again. Every night the countdown gets shorter, it proves it again. You have made a world in which I have to wake up every morning and be that person. I am nine hundred years old and I have not got the strength left. So I am going to go into the dark, which I have spent my entire existence telling people is a mercy, and I am finally going to find out if I was lying.”

Nobody spoke.

”You have until dawn,” said the Redactor, ”which is a courtesy, and more than I ever gave anyone.” It picked the bowl back up and, at last, drank some of my soup. It set the bowl down, looking at me, and said, quite seriously: ”That is genuinely poor. I am told that is the point.”

Then it sat by our fire in the dark, waiting to stop existing. Eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine people waited inside it, and I sat there with everything I had ever learned about holding a room and could not think of one single thing to do.
