Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The morning after Lu turned, we sat down to plan the first thing this whole war had never once let us do — we were finally going on the attack.

I want to sit with how strange that felt. From the first ridiculous DING to the reeds of Sedgewater, I have always been a defensive weapon; a shield, a night-light with a body, the most powerful being that has ever lived, and yet my job has just been to stand in the doorway so the dark wouldn’t pass. I was the backstop, the floor the lines stood on, never once moving on anything. Because the moment you go on the attack in this war, you pick up the sword — and the sword serves the silence. Lu is the proof of exactly where that road ends, kneeling right there in our own camp.

So the question on the table that morning was the hardest tactical puzzle we had ever faced, and I want to state it as plainly as we did, because the whole Chapter is us answering it:

How do you stop the killers without becoming one?

Tao Tao laid out the stakes, and she did it while pointedly not looking at Lu. He sat at the edge of our council, accounted-for and useful and unforgiven, drawing the Crossed’s roads on a map with the same hand that had dug old Ru’s grave. She hasn’t forgiven him. She works beside him because the next town needs saving and he knows how, but every time she has to take a marked map from his hands her jaw goes tight — and I have never once told her to soften, because she is right. Justice is a jaw that stays tight. I would not take that from her.

”We can’t just keep shielding,” she said. ”You held nine lines at Marrow Ford and it was a miracle, but Toma still died. Shields just lose slower; they still lose. As long as the Crossed can reach a town at all, somebody dies, and you can’t un-kill them, and we are still, underneath all our miracles, losing people every week.” She finally looked at Lu. ”You built a machine that kills. Tell us how to stop the machine. Not slow it — stop it. Without becoming a machine that kills back.”

And Lu, who knows the inside of his own weapon the way Xue Ningzhi knew the inside of the Empire, told us the thing that cracked the whole war wide open.

”The Crossed cannot work in the light,” he said.

Here is what he meant, and here is the whole shape of how you take a sword without a blade, so hold it while I show you how it works.

A killer needs the dark. Not the dark we fight — the ordinary, practical kind. The Crossed need to reach a town before the news does, do the thing unwitnessed in a lane no one is watching, and then let the Empire’s machinery blank the witnesses and smooth the record until a massacre becomes a rumor and then nothing. They need the tired grievers marching behind them — the soft souls who took up steel because it felt like doing something with a grief too big to carry — to keep believing they are righteous. Most of all, they need to be ahead; ahead of the warning, ahead of the gathering, ahead of the story.

Take away the dark, Lu said, and the sword has nothing to cut.

So that is what we did. And I will tell you, it was the first plan in this whole war that made me want to laugh out loud, because it was so exactly us.

We did not raise an army. We just turned on the lights.

Ji Lan turned on the first one, and I have to tell you about this because it pays off a night by a far fire when my glamorous storyteller threw down her brush and said she couldn’t tell this story. She had spent months unable to find the words for the truth of this war — the monster that is only grief, the mercy that is only love, the whole unsayable shape of it. That morning, planning the offensive, she finally found them. Not by getting cleverer, but by getting truer. She stopped trying to impress and started telling it as the story it actually was; the weapon we needed turned out to be the exact thing she had been failing at: she would witness. She would take every road Lu marked, every town the Crossed meant to reach, and put the whole thing in the belief-stream live and true and loud — here is where they are, here is who they mean to kill, here is the kettle-mender’s name, the whole world is watching this lane right now — so that nothing the Crossed did could ever sink into the practical dark again. You cannot blank a thing a hundred thousand souls are watching happen. The witness is the weapon. Ji Lan, who feared her whole life being forgotten, became the reason the Crossed could never make anyone forgotten again.

”Thirty years I wanted to be unforgettable,” she said, testing the first broadcast, her eyes wet as she pretended it was just the smoke. ”Turns out the trick was making sure other people were.” She caught me watching, looked away fast, and said, ”Don’t,” so I didn’t. I let her have it. Some things you get to keep quietly.

Tao Tao turned on the second light: the network. Every Rememberer in the fen, every town linked to every town, so the warning ran ahead of the Crossed instead of behind. A town the Crossed meant to catch sleeping was awake and gathered before they even arrived.

And Xue Ningzhi and Lu turned on the third, the cruelest and the kindest one — they knew who was iron and who was tired. Lu had built the Crossed; he knew every soul in it, which ones were true believers and which were just grievers holding steel because no one had shown them another way to carry their grief. So Mu Chen and the reachers went to them. Not to fight — to reach. The same thing we do in the cold, the same thing Xue did to Lu; one carrier to another, I know what you’re carrying, give me a share, it doesn’t have to drown you, you don’t have to make anyone else forget to survive it.

Turn on all three lights at once, Lu said, and here is what happens to a sword.

Fenmarch — the day it worked.

The Crossed came to Fenmarch to kill it, three hundred strong with steel and the struck-through quill, just like they came to Sedgewater and Marrow Ford.

And Fenmarch was waiting for them.

Not with an army. That is the whole thing I need you to see. The town was gathered in its own square, warned a day ahead, every soul linked arm in arm the way Tao Tao’s people taught the world — and above them, in the belief-stream, the whole world was watching this lane. Ji Lan’s witness was pouring out live and true, *here is Fenmarch, here are the people in it, here is what is coming, watch.* You could feel it. The whole sky leaning in. A hundred thousand towns holding their breath over one square.

I held the space. That is still my only job and I did it at Fenmarch the way I have learned to do it — the whole unerasable brightness of me thrown wide and low over the square, the backstop, the floor, so that no soul in that town could be blanked and no soul could be lost. The one light the dark cannot put out, standing under all of them. I did not lift a hand at the Crossed. I did not swing. I have learned that lesson all the way down. I made the town un-erasable, and then I let the town do the rest.

And the sword found nothing to cut.

Because the tired ones — and there were so many, more than half of that three hundred — walked into a square full of gathered, singing, un-blank-able people, under a sky that was watching, and the reachers were already among them saying the true thing; so the tired ones stopped. I watched steel come down out of raised hands all across that square, one and then a dozen and then most of them, grievers laying down a weapon they had picked up because no one ever showed them they could put their grief down without it. Mu Chen moved through them like the gentlest tide there is. The Crossed did not lose a battle at Fenmarch; they dissolved, from the inside, in the light, because you cannot keep an army of the grieving once someone reaches the grief.

And the iron core — the true believers, the ones who could not be reached, maybe forty of them out of three hundred — found themselves alone in a square with no army behind them, no dark to work in, nothing to kill unwitnessed, and the whole world watching their every move.

Bai Qing took them.

Not with a blade. I want to be precise about this because it is her whole life turned to its sharpest point. The gate-keeper of the overlooked, whose entire faith is that you beat the silence by holding people so completely there is nothing left to take — she turned that, at last, on the killers. Her order closed around the iron core, forty gate-keepers to forty swords, and they didn’t cut; they held. Contained them. Surrounded them so completely, in the full light of a watching world, that there was no lane to slip into, no dark to vanish through, and no unwitnessed act left to commit. The cloth had learned to be armor at Marrow Ford; at Fenmarch it learned to be a net. You do not kill the sword. You hold it so completely it can never fall again.

The killing stopped at Fenmarch. Not one grave was dug by our hands. The first town in the entire war of blood the Crossed came to kill and simply could not.

I am not going to give you a clean win, because there are no clean wins and I promised you that on the first page.

Two things.

The iron core did not go quietly. One of them — I will not give him more of a name than the world already had to give him — got a blade into a reacher named Sen before Bai Qing’s people closed the net, because a soul truly committed to killing will find one last life to take on the way down. Sen died in that square witnessed by the whole watching world; we could not un-kill him, and the light did not save him. It saved Fenmarch. It did not save Sen. Both of those are true and I will carry both.

And the second thing, the harder thing, the thing Tao Tao said that night and was right to say: what do we do with forty killers we have caught but will not kill?

”We hold them,” Bai Qing said. ”Witnessed. Accounted-for. Every crime they committed made unforgettable, so they can never work in the dark again, so the world remembers exactly what they did and exactly who they are, forever.”

”For how long?” Tao Tao asked. ”The rest of their lives? We just — hold them, in the light, forever?” Her jaw was tight, and it wasn’t tight at Bai Qing; it was tight at the shape of the thing. ”That’s not nothing, Lin Bo. Holding a person, caged in witness, until they die. I’m not saying kill them; I’m saying don’t pretend it’s clean. We didn’t solve them. We can’t. There is no version of this where forty people committed to murder just become fine. We chose the least-worst thing. Say that it’s the least-worst thing. Don’t let anybody sing about it like it’s a happy ending.”

She was right. It was the least-worst thing. We had answered the sword without becoming the sword — held the killers instead of killing them, made their crimes unforgettable instead of burying our own in their graves — and it was better, genuinely, morally, all the way down. And it was not clean, and it cost Sen his life, and forty souls would live out their days held in the light for what they’d done, and none of that is a thing to sing about. It is only a thing to be able to live with. Which, in this war, is the most any of us has ever gotten.

But we had done it. For the first time. We had taken a sword without a blade.

And I understood, riding out of Fenmarch under a sky that had watched a town save itself, the thing that mattered most about it: the thing that pointed straight down into the cold at the bottom of the world.

The sword served the silence. Xue Ningzhi told me that in the dark after Sedgewater — a graveyard is silent; the sword serves the Editor better than erasure ever did. And we had just unmade the sword. Not with a bigger sword, not with the silence’s own tools. We had unmade it by refusing both of the silence’s mercies at once — refusing to forget, and refusing to kill — and choosing, instead, the third thing, the hard thing, the carry-it-together-in-the-light thing.

And down at the floor of the world, the oldest grief in creation had felt its best remaining weapon taken out of its hands by a world that would not pick up either of the two mercies it had spent an age offering.

I could not wait to go back down and find out what that did to it.
