Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Knowing what something looks like and actually getting it to start are two totally different headaches, and for two weeks after the floor of the world, I had the first part figured out and absolutely none of the second.

I knew how it ended now. I have to keep saying that to myself, because it changed everything about how I walked around, even if I was still clueless about how to get there. The healing was the whole world holding its own memory at once — together, without drowning — and by doing that, it showed the oldest scar there is that the bleeding it was hiding had finally stopped, so it could just open its hands and rest. That was the shape. I saw it. I couldn’t see the first step, though, because every time I reached for one, it was either impossible or just plain insane.

You can’t just announce that the world is going to carry everything at once. That’s exactly how the first world drowned. You don’t walk up to four billion people and say, ”Hey, hold all your grief at the same time, trust me.” And you can’t talk a scar into believing things have changed, because it’s been sitting on that drowned age for an eternity, and it’s already heard every promise and cut through all of them. Words were never going to do it. I learned that the hard way, four years back, and I keep learning it.

So it had to be shown. A real thing, happening right in front of it. A small, true version of the impossible, proving the shape works before we ever dared try it at the size of a sky.

A small version needs the right people — a community that already knows, in their bones, how to carry weight together. It took me most of the two weeks to see the answer, which was right there the whole time.

The far shore.

Here is why it had to be them, and I need you to feel the weight of it, because it is the most fitting thing that’s happened in this entire war.

The far shore people are sailors. The sea has been trying to drown them since forever. Every family down there has names in the water — sailors, way-singers, whole boats that just never came back. They have more practice at grief than anyone alive because they’ve buried it in the ocean so many times. And they answered the sea the way the first world never could: they learned to sing together. The way-song is a road you carry in your mouth, and it’s the reason a deepwater fleet doesn’t drown in fog — all those voices at once, so no single throat carries the way, and losing one singer doesn’t mean losing everything. They survive the water by never facing it alone. They’ve known the cure to the oldest wound in the world for a thousand years, they just only used it to find the harbor, never realizing it could fix something so much bigger.

So we asked them to do a thing no one has done on purpose since the first age.

We asked them to hold all of it at once.

Not one name, like they sang Ohe across the world. Not the nearest grief, one by one, like we taught everyone to walk their own lanes. All of it — every name the far shore ever lost, every drowned sailor and killed singer and forgotten soul, the complete weight of a seafaring people’s grief, held in one single song. The drowning-shape. The exact thing that put the first world under the water forever. Deliberately built, on a beach, in the open — but with the one thing the first world didn’t have: each other.

I need you to understand how scared I was, standing on that beach. We were rebuilding the drowning. On purpose. We were recreating the exact thing that nearly ended the world, just to see if the new ingredient — being together — was enough to make the unbearable actually bearable. If it wasn’t, we were about to watch a whole people go under while holding hands, and it would be my idea that did it.

Nai stood at the front because he carries Ohe the hardest, and he looked at me once without asking if it was safe. He knew it wasn’t. ”We do not let go,” he said. It wasn’t comfort. It was just a fact about his people. Then the fleet began to sing.

I can’t give you the sound of it. There is nothing like it, because it had never been made before.

They sang every name at once. All of them. The whole drowned history of the far shore, generations of the taken, rising off that beach in one braided song — and I felt the weight come down the way I imagine it hit the first world, the full ocean of a people’s grief, all of it present, all at the same time, nothing spared. It was the drowning. I stood in the edge of it and felt the water close over me, and I understood, bodily, why a world alone had gone under and never come back, because it was so much, it was so impossibly much, it was every loss that ever happened arriving in the same breath.

And they didn’t drown.

They held it. Voice on voice, the weight passing between them faster than it could pull any one of them down, each throat carrying a thread of the ocean so no one carried the whole sea — the way-song doing at the scale of grief exactly what it does in fog, keeping a people afloat on water that should have killed them. It was the cloth. It was the cloth at the size of a whole people’s sorrow, and it held, and it held, and I watched a community shoulder the thing that drowned a world and stay standing, because they were standing together, and I have never seen anything I would call more holy.

Then Nai started to go under.

I saw it. He was carrying Ohe on top of everything else, and somewhere in the song the weight found the crack in him, his voice caught, his knees went, and the ocean pulled him down the way it pulls a swimmer who stops moving. My every instinct — four years of them — screamed at me to lunge, to grab him, to throw my brightness under him and carry it because I am the strongest thing on that beach and I could have.

And I didn’t.

That was the hardest thing I’ve done in this war, and I want it on the record. Because carrying it for him was the trap. That’s the whole trap, dressed up small — the bright outsider hauling a people’s weight onto his back because he can’t watch them struggle, drowning himself, and teaching them they can’t carry their own. I’ve been the brightest light long enough to know exactly how that story ends. So I held the space instead. I stood there and was the thing that made the impossible look believable enough to keep going — the world thinks I can’t be stopped, and on that beach I bent all of it into a single insistence: you will not go under, this can be held — and I didn’t touch him, I let his own people catch him.

And they did. The fleet felt Nai slipping and the song swelled, a dozen voices reaching under him at once, and they held him up on the water the way they’ve held each other up for a thousand years, and his head came back above it, and he found the note again, weeping, furious, alive. The cloth caught its own. It didn’t need me to be the fire. It needed me to hold the room and trust the people, which is a smaller and harder job, and the only one that actually works.

They held all of it at once, and none of them drowned.

And up at the top of the sky, the Homelight climbed — a real climb, a whole hand’s width, more than it had moved in a season — because the world had just done, in one small place, the thing it drowned doing in the first age, and lived.

I thought that would scare the scar. I was wrong, and the way I was wrong is the whole of the next Chapter.

It spoke to me that night, and it wasn’t moved toward hope. It was moved the other way. It had watched everything, and where I saw a people carry the drowning and live, it saw only how close they came.

”You saw him go under,” it said, very quietly. ”Nai. You saw the water take him, and I watched your face, and you nearly ended the demonstration to save one man. One. And that was a village, Lin Bo. A few thousand souls who have been practicing together for a thousand years, holding the grief of one small shore — and even they nearly lost a man to it, and you nearly lost your nerve.” A long, tired pause. ”And you want to do that to the whole world. Every soul. Every loss there has ever been, all at once, and no thousand years of practice, and no beach to stand on, and me not there to catch anyone. You showed me your proof. I saw it. It proved I am right. It very nearly drowned a man in front of you, and you call it a reason to try it at the size of the sky.”

The terrible thing was that I understood exactly what it meant, and I couldn’t say it was wrong. We had done the impossible thing, and it had worked, and it had also nearly gone under — and to something that has spent an age terrified of the drowning, ”it nearly went under” isn’t the good half of the sentence. It is the whole sentence.

You can’t prove a scar into letting go. I saw that clearly for the first time, standing on the beach in the dark. Every demonstration cuts both ways. Show it the world can carry the weight, and it sees only how nearly the weight won. I’d been trying to win an argument with the oldest grief in the world, and grief doesn’t lose arguments. It was never going to be moved by proof.

Something else was going to have to move it. And I didn’t yet know what.
