Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We had told the whole world that nobody holds the sky alone. It took me five years and a night where I almost dropped it to realize I’d made myself the only exception.

It was, honestly, the best run we’d had since all this started. The dam was sung to sleep every night now, held by a whole world’s voice, and the Redactor — which had come down to whisper and found no room to fill — had gone quiet. It was the kind of quiet Xue Ningzhi didn’t trust, but the rest of us were, frankly, relieved. Homecomings hummed along. The First Author’s list shed a name most days, eleven thousand four hundred and one and falling, and the second page of shapes was filling up as fast as the world could read its own aches. Rin was learning to write. Yuhan was three valleys deep into bringing their own people home, one a week, just at the speed the world could carry them.

Peace — or something close enough to it. And I need to be real: I didn’t enjoy it. I couldn’t. I was the floor under all of it, and the floor doesn’t get to sit down and enjoy the house.

Here’s something I’d never said out loud, not once in a hundred and thirty-eight Chapters, because saying it meant seeing it: I’d been holding the room, without a single break, for five years.

Every homecoming needs a floor — someone to throw the unerasable ground under the reaching so the ones reaching into the ocean don’t go under with what they pull up. Every descent needs a floor. The dam’s whole defense stands on a floor. The continental weave, the always-braced vessel, the daily miracle of a world bringing its dead home — all of it, every hour of every day, stood on me being the ground it stood on. I never carried the grief. I’d learned that rule so well it was carved into my bones — the floor doesn’t carry the weight; the floor just makes it safe for others to. But I also never set the floor down. Not once. Because the second I did, somewhere in the world a homecoming would drop, a healer would go under, or the dam would be alone in an empty room.

So I held. Day and night. Five years. I told myself the floor doesn’t get tired because it isn’t carrying anything — it’s just being there.

The floor, as it turns out, gets tired.

The first sign was small. I hid it. That’s what I do.

We were bringing home a fisherman named Teo — a nameless one, read out of the shape of a net-shed nobody could explain still standing at the edge of a village three generations after the man who used it was taken. Yun Shu had the shape. The First Author reached. Mu Chen and the weave took the weight. Bai Qing held. And I was the floor, the way I am always the floor, except that halfway through — for the length of one breath, one single terrible breath — the floor flickered.

I felt it go. Felt the ground I was under the whole reaching drop a hand’s width; felt Teo’s half-surfaced shape lurch toward slipping back into the ocean; felt Mu Chen stagger as the weight he was spreading suddenly had nothing beneath it — and then I caught it, hauled it back, and slammed the floor up under everything by main force. Teo came home. Nobody drowned. It was over in less time than it takes to read this sentence.

But Bai Qing had felt it. Bai Qing feels everything; it’s her whole craft. And she looked at me across the reaching with an expression I did not like at all.

”That’s never happened,” she said quietly, after, when Teo was weeping in his grandson’s arms and the village was singing. ”In five years. The floor has never once flickered. Lin Bo—”

”I’m fine,” I said. ”It was nothing. Long week.”

”It was five years,” Yun Shu said. She’d come up beside me without me noticing, which never happens — which is how I knew I was worse off than I thought, because I always notice Yun Shu. She was looking at me the way she looks at a fact she’s already checked and doesn’t like the answer to. ”It was five years, Lin Bo, with no night off, no hour off, holding the ground under the entire world while everyone else got to take shifts. Mu Chen rotates. Bai Qing rotates. The way-singers rotate — Nai built the rotation. Nobody down alone, nobody past their share, that’s the whole carrying-craft. Everyone in this movement works in shifts except one person.” She didn’t raise her voice. She never does when it matters. ”You’ve been telling the dam for a season that it doesn’t have to hold alone. You went down there every single day and told the loneliest thing in creation to set the deciding down and let the world hold it. And then you came back up and held the entire world by yourself, all night, and made a bad soup, and did it again the next day, for five years.”

”That’s different,” I said. ”I’m the floor. Someone has to be the—”

”Why,” said Yun Shu.

I opened my mouth to answer and found I didn’t have one — or rather, the only answer I had was the exact one the dam had given, in the exact words. I heard myself about to say it and stopped, cold, because it was horrible.

Because if I set it down, everyone I love drowns.

Xue Ningzhi said it that night, flat, by the fire, because someone had to and she’s the one who says the things.

”He’s the cost,” she said. ”The permanent vigil. We always knew a vessel braced forever would cost somebody — a load that never stands down has to land on something. We just assumed it would land on a system, something we could see and rotate and repair. It didn’t. It landed on him, quietly, from the start, because he made himself the one part of the whole structure that never rotates.” She looked at me, and for Xue Ningzhi there was something almost gentle in it, which scared me more than anything. ”You built a world where no one holds the sky alone, Lin Bo. And you are the single soul in it holding the sky alone. You made yourself the exact thing your whole doctrine says must never exist — one candle, in one empty room, load-bearing, unrelieved. The reason no one ever noticed is that you’re unerasable, so we all assumed you were unbreakable. Those aren’t the same thing. The dark can’t delete you; that was never the question. The question is whether a man can be the ground under the entire world for five years without ever once being allowed to be held himself — and the answer, tonight, was no. The floor flickered. It will flicker again. And next time you might not catch it.”

The fire was very quiet.

”You’ve been the one nobody held,” Bai Qing said, and there was something raw in it, because of all of them, she knows best what it is to be overlooked for exactly the thing you’re best at. ”We hold everyone. We bring home the ones nobody kept. We sing to the dark so it’s never alone. And the whole time, the one person none of us ever thought to hold was the one holding all of us — because you were so good at being the floor that we forgot the floor was a person, standing in the room, needing to be in it, not just under it.” She swallowed. ”I know what that is. I built my whole life around the people no one sees. And I didn’t see you. None of us did. You made sure of it.”

”I’m fine,” I said, one more time, and my voice did something it doesn’t do — the pot in my lap was cold. I realized I hadn’t noticed it go cold, and that was the most frightening thing of all. Granny Fen’s pot, the thing I’ve carried through every Chapter of this book to tell me whether I’m all right, had gone cold in my own hands and I hadn’t felt it, because I’d stopped feeling anything that wasn’t the weight of the floor.

And Yun Shu looked at the cold pot, and looked at me, and I watched five years of watching-and-being-patient run out of her all at once.

”No,” she said. ”You are not fine. And I have been telling you, kindly, for years, that you are the last one in this whole family who never learned he’s allowed to set things down. I’ve been gentle about it. I’m done being gentle.” She took the cold pot out of my hands. ”Tomorrow, you’re going to do the thing you taught the dark to do. You’re going to let go. And we are going to catch it. And if you say I’m fine one more time, I am going to put you in the soup.”
